Strategic Plan 2011 – 2015 We express sincere appreciation to all members who actively contributed to this Strategic Plan. This is the kind of commitment that strengthens our organization. The Ecsite Strategic Plan 2011-2015 was developed over an 18-month process, beginning in October 2009, and involved the Board of Ecsite, its Executive Committee, a Strategic Planning Task Force and the members of Ecsite. The Board nominated a Strategic Planning Task Force composed of: Hans Gubbels (President), Sharon Ament (Vice-President), Miha Kos (Treasurer until June 2010), Michiel Buchel (Treasurer from June 2010), Vincenzo Lipardi (Past-President), Per-Edvin Persson (Board member and co-leader of the Ecsite Decision making process in 2005-2006), Catherine Franche (Executive Director) and Colin Johnson (facilitator of the process, Honorary member of Ecsite and former director of Techniquest, UK). The Task Force held numerous targeted strategy meetings, during which the Board of Ecsite was actively involved, in November 2009 and April 2010. The Board solicited Ecsite members’ opinions and ideas – over email and at the Directors’ Forum in London, in December 2010 – about how to implement Ecsite’s core values. The Ecsite Board mandated the Executive Committee to put the finishing touches on the Strategic Plan in March 2011. The Plan was then reviewed by the Board before being presented to the Annual General Meeting in Warsaw, Poland, in May 2011. The Ecsite Board looks forward to navigating the Strategic path with the members of Ecsite for the next five years and beyond.

Strategic Plan 2011 – 2015
We express sincere appreciation to all members who actively contributed to this Strategic Plan.

OUr MiSSiON
Ecsite promotes understanding of science and technology by facilitating cooperation among science centres, museums, and re-lated institutions throughout Europe. in this spirit, we strengthen citizens’ engagement and interaction with science. We are the European focal point for institutions who wish to take action in the field of science communication.
Ecsite is the European Network of Science Centres and Museums, with 400 members in more than 50 countries who connect and engage with over 32 million people per year. Ecsite links science centres, science and natural history museums, zoos, aquaria, universities and research organizations in Europe who participate as active members sharing a strong commitment to public engagement and the communication of science through accessible, interactive exhibits and programmes.
“ [science centres are] guides for further exploration, travel agents for the next science stop, starting points to explore – with the help of science and the scientists – the environment and the local region, other science centres as well as research labs and industry.”
José Mariano Gago, Portuguese Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education
Ecsite: Powerful contributor to scientific culture, the knowledge-based economy and an innovative EuropeFew organisations connect with as many people from as many countries or of-fer such a dynamic range of “science in society” perspectives and opportunities. Still fewer can accomplish as much with a small and dedicated team. With its di-verse membership, creative energy and motivated spirit, Ecsite’s future is as exciting as the field of science itself. The strengths of Ecsite are the power of the network’s diverse expertise combined with the focus and professional leadership of its Executive office and Board.
ENriCHiNG A DiVErSE MEMBErSHiP
Ecsite has evolved to lead a wide range of members since its founding in 1989.
Over the past few years, our international reputation and impact has increased, our membership has expanded and our an-nual conference now attracts over 1,000 people from 55 countries, making it the world’s second largest annual science com-munication event.
Ecsite facilitates and leads a thriving portfolio of European and collaborative projects that bring tangible benefit to members and citi-zens. Alongside our projects we organise training programmes for scientists and science communication practitioners and offer a wide range of tools for connectivity such as our vibrant e-newsletter and website. Through these tools we are able to inform members of the latest news and information from the field as well as provide fora for inter-est groups.
ADVOCATiNG qUALiTy SCiENCE COMMUNiCATiON
Ecsite is helping to build European Scientific Culture through exchanges of expertise, in-formation and ideas; our three thematic working groups and annual Directors’ Forum stand out as examples.
Ecsite mediates between the science com-munication sector, politicians, industry, academia, the media and players at the European level. As such, we bring science communication into spheres of influence, such as European Parliament, and help lo-cal governments recognize the value of our members.
Ecsite works with its global partners to con-nect the world with European approaches and values. We collaborate with science communication networks from all other parts of the world in an effort to refresh ideas and pursue international interests with a spirit of partnership. We work with the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC), Asia Pacific Network of Science and Technology Centers (ASPAC), North Africa and Middle East Science Centres (NAMES), the Network for the Popularization of Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (Red Pop) and the South African Association of Science and Technology Centres (SAASTEC).
CONNECTiNG LEADErS AND NETWOrKS
Ecsite is an intellectual hub connecting a cul-turally and institutionally diverse community of professionals and networks. Members can promote their own science communication initiatives through the Ecsite network as well as do business and meet decision makers. We have professionalised our approach and are regarded as a definitive European voice in science engagement.

Strategic Plan
2011/2015
“ …this is the time to talk about science and investment in research – but more than that, we need to explain and engage more with the public, we need to listen actively to the diverse range of views expressed and we need to take account of those views.”
Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Environment and Former European Commissioner for Science and Research
Building on our successesOur future plan builds on successes achieved over the past two decades. As an organisation whose impact has grown, we have also strengthened our capacity to support members and achieve the goals we have set. Some of our achievements:
EUrOPE’S SCiENCE COMMUNiCATiON CONFErENCE
The Ecsite Annual Conference is a corner-stone of the science communication field due to its size, sophisticated programmes, diverse representation and unparalleled net-working potential.
The programme has continuously evolved to incorporate more opportunities for in-depth inquiry. Among many issues and themes, conference sessions have addressed: incor-porating current research into exhibits and public engagement activities, innovative ways of communicating science to a diverse public, effective management methods, us-ing new media, keeping pace with scientific and technological innovation, advocacy for science-related issues, manifesting how sci-ence and society interact and turning inspir-ing concepts into tangible exhibits.
in 2000, the Ecsite Annual Conference attracted 300 people; by 2009 we had increased attendance to one thousand.
ADVOCACy
Ecsite has successfully gained recognition among policymakers, notably from the Euro-pean Commission. For example, our position on public inclusion in science-related mat-ters was written in to the recent European Biodiversity Research Strategy 2010-2020
which was adopted by the EPBRS at its meet-ing in Palma de Mallorca in 2010. As an ac-tion, the strategy aims to: “Further develop links between science and public engage-ment networks like natural history museums, science centres and citizen science pro-grammes.”
EUrOPEAN PrOJECTS
Ecsite takes full advantage of its rich or-ganizational diversity by leading European and collaborative projects that empower its members. Within such projects, the Ecsite Ex-ecutive office in Brussels takes on an invalu-able central management position, enabling members to participate fully. Ecsite’s current European projects cover a variety of issues:
European Cities of Scientific Culture: Ecsite is breaking new ground with the project PLACES by involving over 60 science com-munication institutions from across Europe in the quest to define and develop European Cities of Scientific Culture.
Sharing scientific knowledge online: The Open Science Resources (OSR) project works to create a shared repository of scientific dig-ital objects that are currently dispersed in Euro-pean science museums and science centres – to make them more widely and coherently available, easily searchable and usable in for-mal and informal learning situations.
Public understanding of health issues: Ecsite is working with partners on the Xplore Health project to build an online portal on the latest health research. As a result, more European citizens will be able to get a han-dle on complex health issues; for example, the ethical implications of how and why cer-tain drugs are developed.
Gender and science: The share of women in research is low in many European and asso-ciated countries. The TWIST (Towards Women in Science & Technology) project addresses this challenge with an ambitious programme of coordinated activities to raise awareness
on the role and representation of women in science and technology focusing on gender stereotypes and prejudices related to career paths and social roles.
in 2005, Ecsite participated in five European projects; by 2010 this number had doubled.
NUrTUriNG MEMBErSHiP
Ecsite members use the network’s commu-nication tools, such as the website, e-news and Quarterly Newsletter, to further their in-terests. We have fine-tuned our website’s ac-cessibility so it can be used as a promotional tool and place of exchange for members’ own science communication initiatives.
Ecsite’s members shape the organisation and its direction with their energy, focus and initiative. The Executive office has responded to members’ needs and helped their ideas flourish. For example, three Thematic Groups were devised and developed by members since 2006 – THE Group which works to profes-sionalize the explainer’s role, The Nature Group that takes on issues related to protecting the biosphere, and REV Group which is refining the self-reflexivity of the science communica-tion field using research and evaluation.
With all these opportunities, Ecsite membership is growing with 50 countries represented as of 2011.

Our objectives for this five-year strategy are to foster global science engagement as part of an international endeavour of science centres and museums and to build European Scientific Culture by facilitating collabora-tion across Europe through services and support for members. Ecsite’s Strategic Plan responds directly to these challenges.
“ if people feel they understand the world around them, or, probably, even if they have the conviction that they could understand it if they wanted to, then and only then are they also able to feel that they can make a difference through their decisions and activities. Without this connection people usually live with the sense of being eternally pushed around by alien events and forces.”
Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, Physicist and founder of the Exploratorium in San Francisco, USA
Strategic Plan
2011/2015
“ People learn when experimenting. They don’t realise that they are learning and that their way of thinking is being influenced positively; so we politicians have to acknowledge that science centres worldwide are unique communication tools which have more stopping power than an advertisement in a newspaper or magazine, and which create lifelong memories for everyone…30 million visitors in European science centres each year are becoming better European citizens.”
Luc Van den Brande, President of the European Union’s Committee of the Regions
Five-year Strategic Path
Our five Key Priorities
1. Strengthen the brand of Ecsite to signify its powerful voice in science communication
2. Monitor and develop operational standards in our field with a view to sharpening performance
3. Enable greater collaborative communication among members
4. Use resources to their fullest potential
5. Be a leading partner in fostering science centre activity on a global scale
