The golden light, the birds, the space, salty odours, and water everywhere, splashing against the fondamenti, rippling under the bridges, all the way into his dreams. Most of all, he was moved by the murmuring of feet and the sound of voices suddenly appearing, the only noise to be heard; he imagined he was in the Middle Ages – no, Daan, that’s all wrong, in the Renaissance of course, Rinascimento, rebirth my boy, think! Here: the palace of the doges, go and enter it, well, first wait in the queue for a ‘little while’ (don’t let yourself be disturbed by that), and look around you and don’t forget to look up as well, at all those dizzying scenes that that damn Tintoretto painted there […]
