Dutton Close Residents Association Update

Hello to all dog walkers that walk their dogs around the prison fields. Could you please show other dog walkers respect by keeping all dogs on leads and also

keep to the pathways and don’t let your dogs run around the field. Remember this is private land, and we are lucky to have such a facility to walk our dogs, so

please don't abuse it.

Dutton Close Residents Association would like to thank everyone for all their support with the Play Park. We hope in May that you all will support us again

with the Lucky House Numbers. It has been a great success with 3 winners every month. This has helped with the maintenance of the Play Park. All

winning names from Lucky House Draw are posted in the Play Park Notice Board.

If anyone would like to put their name down for mowing the grass on the park or any other jobs around the Park please get in touch at: [email protected]

Shopping, how it was!

In these days of supermarkets and online shopping it’s all too easy to forget that it was not always like this. Within Stoke upon Tern there were, within living memory, many small shops and businesses selling goods and services to local people. These provided all the basic needs of life (and death) round about.

Many of you will remember Peter Speight and his mobile shop in a bus, selling all sorts until the 1980s; he was nearly the last in the line of these small businesses; or perhaps remember even earlier, Joe Masters, “The Midnight Grocer”.

Then, mainly small, shops were dotted around the settlements within the Parish. In Wistanswick, in addition to the Red Lion, there was a shop at the Smithy, run by the Wildes, which sold sweets, papers, cigarettes and tobacco. There was also a general store at Yew Tree Cottage which was owned by Mr & Mrs Edwards. There was also a bakery run by the Abbotts.

In Stoke Heath there was the store at the top of Rosehill Road, now Kev ‘n Di’s; which was owned by the Nagingtons and then by Mr Wakefield when the Nagingtons moved to the Adastra.

There were delivery services for other basics, bread from Rhodes, milk from Warners at Lythe Beck Farm and fruit and veg from Boughies who lived on Chapel Lane and had a small shop and delivered by horse and cart.

There were three Post Offices. In Wistanswick it was originally at Rose Cottage by the Red Lion, it was moved up to what is now known as the Old Post Office run originally by the Misses Millington and subsequently Colonel Gilson and the Charlesworths and Popes, which finally closed in the 1980s. In Stoke on Tern there was a Post Office run by Mr and Mrs Roberts situated on the corner of Langley Dale, by the bus shelter. The third, I believe was in Eaton on Tern.

The children were supplied with sweets and chocolates from two shops, one in Wistanswick run by Mr & Mrs Hughes, and one on Rosehill Road run by Mrs Jones. Even in death residents were well served, there was Millingtons Undertakers and builders based in Wistanswick.

Now in 2017, all we have is Newcott Fish and Chips who also sell a few basic provisions; it shows how much has changed over the last 80 or so years.

I have done this piece on the basis of a couple of chats and I am sure that I have missed quite a bit of detail; if anyone has any more info please let me know.
