Under floor Heating in the Hub

This picture shows the floor where the heating pipes are coiled

Polypipe flow & returns which are sited in the wall.

The thermostat controls the operation of the circulating pump, normally set at 20 C. Only the Ground, 1st and second floors in the Hub has underground floor heating.

STEM CHALLENGE - 2015

CHP• Combined heat and power (CHP) integrates the production of

usable heat and power (electricity), in one single, highly efficient process.

• CHP generates electricity whilst also capturing usable heat that is produced in this process.

• This contrasts with conventional ways of generating electricity where vast amounts of heat is simply wasted.

• In today’s coal and gas fired power stations, up to two thirds of the overall energy consumed is lost in this way, often seen as a cloud of steam rising from cooling towers.

Combined Heating & Power Plant

The CHP is sited in the Energy Centre, Watts. The heat from the generator is used to supply the flow and return ring main to the Watts, Hub and Aspire and heat these buildings.

The CHP produces 184 Kw/h and supply's electric back into the Watts building

The generator attached to the CHP gas engine supplies 184 Kw/h

NATURAL VENTILATION

STEM CHALLENGE - 2015

• Natural ventilation makes use of the forces of wind and differences in air to move air through a building.

• The other option is mechanical ventilation which uses fans and a system of ductwork to supply air to the areas of the building which require it.

• The disadvantage of this is that the fans require power for them to operate and occupy space within the building.

Natural Ventilation

The two natural ventilation ducts seen in the photo supplies natural ventilation to Hu222 and Hu223. The amount of fresh air allowed to enter the room is controlled via a thermostat operating dampers.

Rain Water holding tank outside the Hub

Sited underground the tank collects rain water from the Aspire roof.

Holding reclaimed water tank sited in the Aspire plant room

Water is filtered and passes through a UV lamp before used as flushing water for the W/C`s. The right hand side show the inlet pipe to the tank from the collected rain water. If there is no water in the underground tank then fresh water will fill the tank via a solenoid valve.
