Cattlemen,What a difference a year makes! Cattle prices are at record levels and feed costs are declining, good to be on this side of the cattle cycle. As we all know however thegood times are much shorter than the tough times. Input costs continue to be at record levels and probably wonít come down much more. With that being said pro-ducers are trying to rebuild their herds and breeding females are demanding record prices. This is a great time to sharpen our management skills and maximize pro-duction of our livestock and we feel Simmental as a breed is leading the way to maximize production per cow or per acre of grass. One of the greatest attributes ofSimmental is a highly fertile female that has adequate milk, calves unassisted, and is easy to handle. The Simmental bulls produce cattle the feedlots want with theirability to gain red muscle and still grade choice and hang a heavy carcass.

Our herd, for the 5th straight year, has been recognized with a Performance Advocate award and a score of 500. Simply put this award is given for producers whoturn in data for every cow in their herd for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight and yearling hip height. It takes a great deal of discipline and effort to makesure all records are recorded and up to date and Stavick Simmental is very proud to be one of the 41 who qualified for spring 2013 enrollment in the country. It alsogives you, our customers, the confidence you need, when selecting your next herd bull, that numbers are real and not weighted to be an advantage to some siregroups or individual.

The bulls are developed on a complete TMR high roughage ration. The ration consists primarily of prairie hay, corn silage, alfalfa and corn along with a dense proteinpellet. They are developed with a target Average Daily Gain (ADG) of 3.65 lbs. Fast enough to observe bulls that excel in feed conversion and eliminate those that donítand slow enough to allow maximum skeletal growth, foot and testicular development. Again I will emphasize a core belief of ours that a customer should never haveto worry about foot problems because of overfeeding.

As far as herd health goes all cows are actively tested for Johnes. We are on a modified live vaccination protocol utilizing Bovishield, Somubac, Ultra bac and Enforce3. All bulls will be current on worming and be poured within 30 days of sale. All bulls will be semen tested prior to the sale and delivered the end of March. If youshould choose to take your bull home day of the sale we will credit you $100 per bull.

A couple quick notes. Notice we have included a Calving ease score from 1 to 5 stars. This is simply an opinion on what we feel each bulls ability to calve are basedon past experience of dam, calf birth weight and shape of the calf at birth. We recommend only bulls with 5 ***** to be used on heifers and bulls with 1 * to be usedon mature cows. Again this in only our recommendation and your management practices and experience must be considered.

REFERENCE SIRES

Feeding of your new yearling bull is one of the most important steps in the continued maturity process. If you choose to take your bull home it is vital to maintain proper nutri-tional levels for proper semen production, skeletal development and foot and leg structure. From the day you get him home until turnout, the bull must be in a positive energybalance for increasing the odds of years of continued use. Basic needs are clean fresh water, free choice mineral, adequate dry bedding and wind protection. On the nutritionalend yearling bulls should continue to receive at least 14% of ration in protein and a 48 megacal ration. Typically free choice alfalfa hay and 8-10 lbs of corn will hit this. After

breeding season, separate yearlings and start feeding this type of ration to make sure they are in adequate body condition before the chill of winter hits. Keep yearling and 2 yearolds separate from the older bulls. I realize this is difficult but with the cost of investing in new animals every effort must be taken to minimize stress and injury.

We bred several Hetro Black females to King of Diamond trying to expand our red program, this calf is a resultof that effort but he came out black. He is really a unique calf, being about as deep and muscular as you canbe just on a bit smaller frame. He has a very well balanced set of EPD’s and could be used to make replace-ments or feeders. For whatever reason during AI I could not get the pipette passed on 207Z. The only bull around the ranch thatday was King of Diamond. I knew this heifer carried the red gene and I said what the hell and turned themtogether. I figured I would worry about getting the calf out of her later since at the time Diamonds numberssaid not to breed to heifers. Long story short we got a black bouncing baby boy weighing in at 84 lbs bornunassisted and weaned at 706 lbs! Here is a neat made, slightly smaller frame, King of Clubs calf, out of an Apollo dam. Apollo is a sire we usedon our virgin heifers as a cleanup bull. His calving ability was second to none. While I don’t think this bull qual-ifies as a heifer bull, with the correct management he is very close, with a 14 CE and -1.6 BW! 69B has oneof the most balanced set of numbers in the sale. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparisonof genetic levels for many economicallyimportant traits, they only provide a piece ofthe economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexescome in. Through well-conceived, rigorousmathematical computation, $ indexes blendEPDs and economics to estimate an animal’soverall impact on your bottom line. Thesame technology that led to the dramaticprogress in swine, poultry and dairy geneticsover the last several decades was used todevelop the following $ indexes:

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for useon the entire cow herd (bred to both Angusfirst-calf heifers and mature cows) with theportion of their daughters required to main-tain herd size retained and the remainingheifers and steers put on feed and sold gradeand yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use onmature Angus cows with all offspring put onfeed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which indexto use; if you’re keeping replacements useAPI, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs,zero in on the unit difference between bulls.(As described above, index units are in dol-lars per cow exposed.) The difference can beused to determine how much a bull is worthcompared to another. Or, put another way,how much you can pay for one bull comparedto another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure abull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra$6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart isrequired to determine where a bull’s indexvalue ranks him relative to other bulls in thebreed.
