Education In 2016, the Museum presented lessons to 16,496 students, both in the classroom and at the Museum’s two locations. New lessons were developed to compliment exhibits, and old favorites were updated to align with New York State education standards. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from Con Edison, the Museum presented STEM Days Out in collaboration with SI Makerspace. 7th grade classes took part in hands-on science, technology, engineering or math lessons at the Museum, including making light-up helicopters! 7th and 8th graders from the School of Civil Leadership, IS 861 launching helicopters for Con Ed’s STEM Days Out! We are working with the City of New York to renovate the former dormitory into our Natural Science and Biodiversity Center. To date, the City provided over half of the $13M needed to renovate Building B. Mayor Bill de Blasio contributed $3.7 million; City Council Member Debi Rose allocated the majority of the $2.215 million from the City Council; and Borough President James Oddo donated $1.066 million totaling almost $7 million. Membership and Visitors Each day, and especially with the opening of our new home at Snug Harbor, the Staten Island Museum has seen more and more visitors cross our thresholds. In 2016, the two sites had 54,064 visitors - 25% more than we had three years ago! Additionally, membership has grown: there were 1179 members in 2016, 753 of which joined the Museum through the ID NYC program. Lunar New Year Celebration, 2016. A Little Help From Our Friends The Staten Island Museum is grateful to the organizations and foundations that provide grants and sponsorships to help us achieve our mission. Thanks to support from Deutsche Bank, the Hearst Foundation, Verizon Foundation, Mid-Island Rotary Foundation, Staten Island Rotary Foundation, and Con Edison, we have been able to provide thousands of underserved students from Title-I schools free and reduced rate classes, develop new lessons, and offer STEM programming to middle school students. Additionally, organizations like TD Bank, Macy’s and Northfield Bank Foundation have provided essential support to grow our institution and increase our offerings. Partnerships We accomplish more when we work together. That’s why, this year the Staten Island Museum began a partnership with Level Solar, a green energy company bringing solar power to homes throughout Staten Island and New York City. Interested in switching? Mention the Staten Island Museum and Level Solar will donate $250 to us! Guided Tour of the Staten Islanld Museum’s Exhibit, Staten Island SEEN. Docents In October 2016, the Museum had its first docent led tour in the new Museum. These knowledgeable and passionate volunteers lead exhibition specific tours every Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Current docent Richard Benz was recently featured as a NY1 Staten Islander of the Week! Interested in becoming a docent? Two New ExhibitsIn 2016, the Staten Island Museum opened two new exhibitions - one at each location. HOMEGAMES opened in St. George last April, and was a collaboration with the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame. In Snug Harbor, Infinite Compassion: Avalokiteshvara in Asian Art opened in October in collaboration with the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art.
