Fourteen Brawling Boys Criminally ChargedSAN IGNACIO TOWN, CAYO,Tuesday, August 14, 2012: With the apparent excessconsumption of rum again at thecenter of yet another brawl, fourteenboys, all Belizean laborers fromBullet Tree Falls Village, Cayoappeared in court today all facing ajoint disorderly conduct charge The village brawl is said to havestarted a few minutes before 9 o’clockon the night of Monday, August 13,right in front of the police stationin the village. Fortunately for thebrawling boys, their detention wasmomentarily delayed because therewas not a single policeman inside thevillage station. Apart from being bound over tokeep the peace for three months, theywere all fined one hundred dollars.They were given two and a halfmonths - by October 30- to pay thefine, in default, 2 months in jail - muchin contrast to, Magistrate NardaMorgan who routinely orders for finesof up to a thousand dollars to be paidforthwith and in almost every instance,convicts always come up withthe money to pay the fines - Animportant observation also is thatMagistrate Morgan always orders forcourt orderlies to present her withevery single government receiptbefore convicts are released.

Dear Editor; Sometimes I sit around andlisten to the morning radio talk showsand I hear the complaints about allkinds of things. The hospital and our medicalservice often comes up forcriticism. When I listen to some of thecriticisms, I cannot help but ask:When will we ever learn to countour blessings? I believe that those criticizing aremostly of the younger generation andso might not know from whence wecame. I am from an older generation andif we are to compare the kind ofmedical services that is now availableto the kind we had when I was a child,all I can say is that we have come along, long ways. For the benefit of the youngergeneration, in my time growing up wehad only one doctor at the hospital inSan Ignacio to attend to us and guesswhat, that single doctor was not evena general practitioner, no he was not,believe it or not, the doctor in chargeof the hospital here in Cayo was aDENTIST.

We Have Come A Long Ways I cannot remember the real nameof this Cuban Dentist, but thecommunity knew him as“Comprende”. He got the nickname because everytime this dentist prescribed amedicine for our illnesses and gave usthe dosage instruction he wouldalways end with the word“Comprende” translated into Englishto mean “Do You Understand” Body-wise Comprende was a bigman. On those occasions when heperformed services in line with histraining, we recall the primitive toolsand procedures he used. It was notuncommon for him to place his kneeour chests to hold us down has heyanked out our teeth. The next time you feellike criticizing today’s medical serviceswith all its specialists, think again,be ever mindful that we camefrom an era when a dentist wasthe one treating our sickness anddispensing medicine to residentsin western Belize. The Destruction Left By Guatemalan Gold Diggers

kilometers inside Belize. The two Guatemalans wereidentified as Crisanto AugustinChoc, 45 and Santiago Choc,19, both from the village of ElNaranjo. They were escorted to thepolice station in San Ignacio after agruelling effort of moving them fromthe extreme southern area of theChiquibul forest to Millonario and thento police station. At the Millonario junction, the twodetainees attempted to escapefrom the authorities but werereapprehended. The stealth action ofthedetainees is impressive as itdemonstrates their determination toelude Belizean authorites and theirability to work fearlessly in extremedark conditions. Two days later, on August 12 theCeibo Chico joint forces unit, withadditional support, detained aadditional ten persons in the area of

Rio Blanco creek located approxi-mately seven kilometers inside Belize. The first set of three malepersons, found panning for gold, wereidentified as Guatemalan from theMonte los Olivos Village. Approximately 20 meters away,another three male persons were

encountered all of whom ran off. Oneof them slipped on the rocky terrainand emerged injured. He wasconsequently detained andhandcuffed. Continuing on the patrol the jointforces came upon another six malepersons and found panning for gold.They were also found in possessionof small quantities of suspectedmarijuana They told the patrol thatthey are all Guatemalans also fromMonte Los Olivos. The nine adults and one minor,all male Guatemalans wereescorted to the San IgnacioPolice Station where they are detainedpending charges which include drugtrafficking, illegal entry, entering intoa national park without authorization,defacing a natural area andillegal panning for gold. The detainees informed ofhaving knowledge of operations byBelizean authorities to capture those

involved in illegal activities on Belizeanterritory. They informed aboutleaving for a while but returned as thenumber of Guatemalans from MonteLos Olivos, amounting to almost onehundred, were “working” in the areaof Rio Blanco Creek nside BelizeanTerritory.

The patrol is of the firm belief thatthere is quite a large numberof Guatemalans involved in illegalactivities in the area and that there isa high probibality of future dangerousand maybe even violent encounterwith them.. Given the current situation, FCDrecommends: 1. A high level working groupcomprising personnel from the

Ministry of National Security, theMinistry of Forestry, Fisheries andSustainable Development and theMinistry of Foreign Affairs convenean urgent forum where immediatestrategic steps are adapted to takecontrol of the situation; 2. Synchronize efforts with all the

regulatory agencies including theForest Department, Department ofImmigration, and the Mining Unit inorder to be more swift and effectivein prosecuting gold panners; 3. The incorporation of theDepartment of the Environmentinto this matter to spearhead theprosecution on charges ofdestruction, contamination of Belize’sheadshead.

Clerk Charged For Theft The investigation pointed squarelyat Belizean First Class Clerk,Francine Garcia, 29, of a Rose-wood Street address in San Ignacio. In the process of the investigation,statements were recorded fromGarcia’s supervisor as well as fromwork colleague, Weada Mangarand Germaine Bradley, respectively. The investigation led to the arrest ofthe accused, Francine Garcia, on asingle theft charge. While the police were preparing topresent the accused in court, themissing money, in full, was returnedand handed over to Ms. Mangar.Notwithstanding this development,the police proceeded to presentthe accused in court where the theftcharge was read to her byMagistrate Linsbert Willis. Garcia pled not guilty to the charge.She was offered and met bail in thesum of $2,500 and ordered to return

to court on Wednesday, October 24,2012. Bail was offered on the condition thatthe accused: 1) present to the courther Belizean passport and all traveldocuments 2) that she does not leavethe country without approval from thecourt and 3) that the accused reportto the police station every Wednes-day between the hours of 8:00 amand 5:00 pm. The third condition of the bail mightnot be difficult for the accused as,after being away from work for a fewdays, she was back to work insidethe police station on Thursday. In thismatter the Officer Commanding theCayo (Police) District, Sr. Supt.Chester Williams informed thatthe accused does not fall under thepolice command but rather underthe umbrella of the Ministry of thePublic Service which is charged withthe responsibility to determine if sheis to be suspended or not.
