explore how effective the combination of my main product

and ancillary texts is?

My Pop Video is….

La la la by Double Dream

A pop video is made to promote a group on television, in order to boost record sales.

Page 3: Stars presentation

Digipak

• I created a digipak that is a digital or CD sleeve that is used to promote the single or album on the internet for download sales and CD sales in retail stores such as HMV

• The digipak tries to grab the attention of the buyer

Carlsson’s Theory

• The theorist Carlsson states that pop videos and other forms of public appearance of pop stars should try to establish the image of the band and make them stars

• According to Carlsson stars are either; commercial exhibitionists, televised bards or electronic shaman

Page 6: Stars presentation

Commercial Exhibitionists

• Commercial exhibitionists are pop stars that; projects an image, are an extravert and put themselves out for commercial exhibition usually using sexual magnetism.

For example, Lady Gaga wears extravagant clothes whenever she is in the public eye.

Page 7: Stars presentation

Televised Bards

• Artists that tell a story in their song. For example; James Blunt who’s lyrics include “I saw you on the subway, you were with another man”

Page 8: Stars presentation

Electronic Shamen

• An artist that preaches or send a message to their audience. For example, The Smiths that have released songs that preach about topics such as ‘Meat is Murder’

Page 9: Stars presentation

• Double Dream are commercial exhibitionists and electronic shaman

• They are commercial exhibitionists because they are average twins in their private persona but in their public persona they appear dream like and ethereal

• There are electronic shaman because they preach about youth and having fun in their debut single; as the lyrics follow “Make yourself free, make yourself grow”

Richard’s Dyer Theory of ‘Star Image’

• According to Dyer; the term ‘star’ refers to the set of mythological set of meanings constructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience.

• This includes trying to create a brand for the singer to become a ‘star’. This means they have to keep a public image to not lose status and therefore money.

Double Dream’s Star Image

• Through the image of the band, the pop promo, the digipak and the magazine advert I created a star image of Double Dream.

• This image is ethereal, heavenly and enigmatic.

Page 12: Stars presentation

Richard Dyer

• According to Dyer, stars have some key features in common:

• A star is an image, not a real person, that is constructed out of a range of materials.

• Starts and commodities produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings

• In my case I created an image for Double Dream through the prom video, the Digipak and the advert through synergy. This was an image of girly, heavenly, ethereal creativity and uniqueness.

Some Common Values of music Stardom

• Youthfulness• Rebellion• Sexual Magnetism• An anti-authoritarian attitude• Originality • Creativity/talent• Aggression/anger• A disregard for social values relating to drugs, sex

and polite behavior• Conspicuous consumption of sex, drugs and material

goods• Success against the odds

Page 14: Stars presentation

Double Dream’s

• Youthfulness- represented the common value of youthfulness, by choosing two girls that were teenagers and dressing them in white dresses to represent their youth.

Page 15: Stars presentation

• Sexual Magnetism- we chose two girls that would be attractive to teenage boys and teenage girls would want to be them as they are creative, pretty and have a unique fashion taste. Twins are typically known to bring over sexual magnetism for men, and we maximized this with their close behavior in the pop promo.

Dyer’s theory of Paradox

• According to Dyer a Stars image is incoherent, incomplete and open. Dyer says this is because it is based upon two key paradoxes. This means a star image doesn’t make sense as the paradox clash- this is in the case of Double Dream also.

Page 17: Stars presentation

Paradox 1• The star must be simultaneously ordinary and

extraordinary for the consumer• This means the audience are interested in what the

stars are like in their personal persona. For example, if they enjoy the same films and music as we do.

• The audience wants to feel as though they are a normal ‘punter’ but are extra-ordinary in their star image they are extra-ordinary

• In Double Dream they are normal teenage twins that enjoy the same things as other teenagers do, for example, listening to pop music, watching American chick flicks and hanging out with friends. However, they appear ethereal, heavenly and extraordinary in their public persona

Page 18: Stars presentation

Paradox 2• According to Dyer the star must be simultaneous

present and absent for the consumer• The artist must be touchable and untouchable at

the same time• This means the audience might see and

recognize the artist in the street but they do not know them personality even if they feel they do

• We created this using the magazine advert for Double Dream- fans will purchase tickets for their tour and appear at Double dream’s performance. This means they will see the band, but this does not mean that they are touchable and know them personally even though they are sharing a room with them.

Levi Strauss concept of universal myths

According to Levi Straus universal myths are stories which answer questions that any society, anywhere in the world at any time past, present and future has to answer. Such as why does the human race exists?

Page 20: Stars presentation

Universal myths for Double Dream

• Answers the question do young women have freedom and independence? The video juxtaposes this as it addresses the sexual stereotypes of women, using ‘girly’ colours such as pink, flowers and fairy lights in the mise-en scene of the shoot.
