Weekend of road madness
SHANNON HOPKINS
THE demoltion of the old N2bridgeonFridayeveningresult-ed in a major traffic congestion
at the weekend. This was due to an influx of Rage
festival goers, holiday makers and tonorth and south highway traffic beingdiverted through Ballito. The newbridge had already been opened be-fore the demolition took place to ac-commodate traffic. The N2 was re-opened at 6pm on Sunday after afterbeing closed at about 6pm on Friday.
Snowy Mountains EngineeringCorporation (SMEC) resident engi-neer Dave Kendall said the weekendhadbeenstressful, but thatat least thejob is now done.
“With the holiday season comingup, it was feasible to remove the oldbridge as this is the last weekend be-fore the holidays – it just would havebeen too busy thereafter. “Traffic wasverycongested,buttheworkwasdoneinunderthe53hoursallocatedandweare pleased with the way it went off,”he said.
Kendall said that the demolitionhad been subject to much planningand no damage had been done to theN2 highway during the work. He saidthat the central pier holding up thebridgewas blasted out in order to col-
lapsethebridge.Hesaidtherewasstillsomerubbleonthesidesof theN2thatwould be crushed and removed soon.
Kendall said that although thereare other ways of undertaking thework, this was the quickest.
“If we had used any other method,theN2 trafficwould have had to be di-vertedforweeks,whichwejustdidnothave the time for.”
But residents said that they weredisappointed that they had not beeninformedof thedemolitionbeforeFri-day morning.
A visitor from Hillcrest said traffichadbeenbackedupalmost to theTon-gaat toll at one stage on Saturday.
With the traffic being diverted androad works in a separate project con-tinuing on the R102 near Tongaat, even theM4beach road and the R102were very congested.
Ballitoresident,NormanGray, saidcontractors were “totally mad” to dothe demolition when they did, as itcould just as easily have been carriedout after the holiday period.
“ThetrafficonFridayandSaturdaywas shocking - in fact try almost anyday at 3pm until 5:30pm. If this is anexampleofwhat it isgoingtobe likeaf-ter13December, it isscary,”saidGray.
He added that a traffic departmentvehicle had been stuck beside him atthetraffic lightscomingdownfromthe
hospital near Ashton College duringtheweekend,andneitherofthetwoof-ficers got out to help direct the traffic.
North Coast KwaDukuza Ratepay-ers Association (NKKRPA) chairmanRay Millican said that he wrote to au-thorities about the matter of festiveseason traffic and what concerns himis the that there are no traffic controlmeasures in place to date.
“How do they (authorities) intendcontrolling the influxofpeopleandve-hiclesalsotakingintoconsiderationallthe events taking place? We have toconsider day trippers from surround-ing areas, holiday makers, residentsplus people coming to all the events.
“Worse still is most of the traffic iscurrently controlled by the contrac-tors, and they are commencing holi-daysonabout13December.Theques-tion arising is, whatmeasures are go-ing to be put in place to control this?”said Millican.
He said that it took him about anhour and ahalf to get to the pharmacyon Friday afternoon - normally a 10minutetrip.Workstartedonthemulti-million rand N2 upgrade in 2011 andisscheduledtobecompletedinthefirsthalf of next year.
Engineers said delays were duemainly to the original company, KNSConstruction, going insolvent in Aprillast year, coupled with bad weather
conditions.The separate contract adjacent to
the Lifestyle Centre to widen the roadto six laneswill be finished in Septem-ber 2014.
The demolished old N2bridge being cleared away.
IN the 29 November edition ofStanger Weekly it was incor-rectly reported, in a article ti-tled“BringingbackthespiritofUbuntu”, that KwaDukuzaFamily Violence, Child Pro-tection and Sexual OffencesUnit (FCS) investigatingofficerChristina Subraylu said shewas unhappy with a sentencehanded down to a convictedrapist.
In fact, Subraylu was in-volved in the plea negotiationprocess and the outcome ofthe matter. According to theNational Prosecuting Authori-ty based in Stanger, all parties(investigating officer, com-plainant, prosecution and de-fence) were satisfied with theoutcome as a guilty verdictwas resultant as opposed to awithdrawal. We apologise for any incon-

HEADING to the “world cup of architec-ture”is any young and upcoming archi-tect’s dream, and for local ladNischolan
Pillay this dream is about to come true.Pillay, who is currently completing his mas-

Thursday, 2 January to Monday, 27 January. The competition forms one part of the UIA
Conference which will take place in SouthAfrica for the first timeat theUKZNandDurbanUniversity of Technology campuses in Julynext year.
The 24-year-old Stanger Manor SecondarySchool alumni was selected by architectureprogramme lecturers after he created an ur-bandesign schemeand submitted solutions forinterventions around the dynamic WarwickJunction site in Durban.

According to Mthembu, most ofthe beneficiaries are women whoabandoned their homes to escapeabusive husbands.
“The women said they were de-lighted to finally receive their ownhomes after years of living in rentedaccommodation and being evicted
with their children for failing to payrent.”
One of the women, Laura Mashe-go, left her abusivehusbandandhadbeen renting a room with her twochildren for several years.
Jobhi Sokhela (58) whose hus-band died a few years ago, said shehad been moving from one rentedroom to the next as she could not af-ford to pay for accommodation forherself and her four children.
Shehad registered for the govern-ment’s housing scheme, but had al-most given up hope of receiving ahome when nothing happened aspromised last year.
“But today I feel so alive, I cannotbelieve I have my own home,” shesaid, clutching the set of keys handedto her by the mayor.
Another recipient, ThembaNtombela (55) said her first homehad burnt down. She was never
married andhas had to provide shel-ter for her three children by workingpart time.
The new home has brought hopeand security for Gladys Zuma (55) asingle mother of two.
“I have never owned a house inmy life. I hope this brings security tomy children,” she said, adding thatboth children’s fathers had died andshe was the sole provider.
Mthembu said that the houses
were a small contribution to ease thepain and suffering of the women andchildren.
“Today we stand here to contrib-ute to the eradication of violenceagainst women and children,” hesaid, adding that most women whosuffered abuse at the hands of theirpartners ended up homeless. Thehouses are part of the housing de-partment’s contribution to the 16Days of Activism campaign.

“Christmas and what is the true meaningof Christmas? Christmas is a holiday that iscelebrated in many ways by many different

“So many people have lost sight of thetrue meaning of Christmas and they believethat Christmas is all about Santa or allabout toys!
“Christmas means so much more thanthe gifts beneath your tree. God loved us somuch, that even though we are all sinners,He designed a way to bridge the gap between us and Him. He sent us a Saviour ina little baby in a manger. It is not a fairy tale. The birth of Jesus is a true event in historyand because of the Father’s love for us, wenow have hope of life everlasting,” said Pastor Harry.

So far you went…only to be taken away from
us…without awarning youwere gone, beforewe
knew it and only God knows why… A thousand
words won’t bring you back, we know because
we’ve tried, A thousand tears won’t bring you
back, we know because we’ve cried. It broke our
hearts to lose you but you didn’t go alone, as part
of us went with you the day God took you home.
In life we loved you so dearly, in death we love
you still. In our hearts we hold a special place that
only you can fill. Our hearts ache in sadness and
secret tears flow, what it meant to lose you, no
one will ever know. Always on our minds, forever
in our hearts. Treasured you will stay, until we
meet someday…
Sadly missed by family and friends.
