    St Valentine's Day

    History of St. Valentine's Day

    Who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this day?

    According to one legend, Valentine was apriestduring the thirdcenturyinRome. When Emperor Claudius II decided thatsingle men made bettersoldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawedmarriage for youngmen. Valentine was not happy and he continued to perform marriages foryoung lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudiusordered that he be put to death.

    According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine'greetinghimself. While in prison, Valentine fell in love with a young girl.

    Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From yourValentine,' an expression that is still in use today.

    Qui est ce saint mystrieux et pourquoi clbrons-nous ce jour?D'aprs une lgende, Valentin tait un prtre du 3e sicle, Rome.     D'aprs une autre lgende, Valentin a en fait adress lui-mme les premiersmots d'amour. Pendant qu'il tait en prison, Valentin est tomb amoureux d'unejeune fille. Avant sa mort, il lui a crit une lettre, qu'il a sign 'De ton Valentin',une expression qui est toujours utilise aujourd'hui.

    Who was Saint Valentine?

    According to a legend St. Valentine was a priest near Rome

    in about the year 270 AD

    When Claudius II became the emperorhe believed that soldiers

    would be unable to concentrate on fighting if theywere married.

    So he banned marriage.

    Valentine defied the emperor and secretly performed marriage ceremonies.

    He was put to death on February 14th.

    CUPID

    Cupid was the son of Venus the goddess of love andbeauty.

    Psyche was a mortal princess, she was so beautiful that Venus was jealous andordered Cupid

    to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. After a lot ofevents Psyche died.
