Twentiy-First Sunday in Ordinary Time August 21, 2016

At 6:30am on Monday, August 1st, Stephanie, Alex and I waved off our pilgrims

as they began the long journey back to East Hanover. We then rented a car and began

the most wonderful road trip which covered 5 countries!

When I travel I love to visit churches, shrines and monasteries and get into the

history of the place where I am visiting and enjoy the rich heritage. On Monday we

drove over the mountains from Poland Slovakia, where we stayed in the second city Kosice. All I can say

about Kosice is who knew amazing! It was an old city. I celebrated Mass in the Cathedral built in the

13th

century. After Mass we climbed the tower and viewed the city that used to be an important outpost

in the Austrian Hungarian empire.

On Tuesday, August. 2nd

we crossed the border into Hungry and drove 3 hours to the magnificent

city of Budapest. This beautiful old city was originally 2 towns, Budha and Pest which in the 1800’s was

joined by a bridge and thus became an important city in the Austrian Hungarian empire. I celebrated

Mass at the ancient Basilica of St. Steven and we spent a delightful evening roaming around the city.

On Wednesday, August 3rd

, I celebrated Mass at an old Benedictine Abbey called Pannonhalna

built high above the hills of Budapest. That evening we took a cruise on the Danube and took in the city

by night.

On August 5th

we drove 3 hours to the city of Vienna and spent the afternoon exploring the city. I

celebrated Mass at the beautiful Cathedral of St. Steven. I met pilgrims from WYD from the Middle

East, Philippines, India and Kentucky who joined us for Holy Mass.

On August 6th

we visited the gorgeous Palace of the last Emperor of Austria, The Schonbrunn

Palace. We then left for the city of Salzburg. On the way we crossed the Danube and I celebrated Mass

in the beautiful old Abbey of Melk. We arrived in Salzburg in the late evening.

On August 7th

I celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of Salzburg after which we explored the old

castle and spent the rest of the day bicycling around the beautiful lake district where the Sound of Music

was made.

On Monday the 8th

we crossed the border into Germany and enjoyed the drive on the Auto bahn

as we speed toward the city of Munich. This area of Bavaria is predominately Catholic and is the most

beautiful part of Germany. It’s an area of rolling hills, fertile land and friendly people.

Between Monday and Friday we enjoyed the beautiful city of Munich. I celebrated daily Mass at

the Cathedral of St. Peter.

On Thursday, we visited the home of Pope Benedict. His father had been a police constable in the

town of Marktl and he grew up living above the office. We visited the church of St. Oswald where he was

baptized.

During our last few days in Bavaria, we enjoyed the beauty of the countryside and the elegant

cosmopolitan city of Munich. I flew home on Friday, August 12th

full of energy and happy to return to

the parish which I love. As a priest, it is a wonderful treat to be able to visit religious sights, immersed

into history and gain the insight from prayer and space how to best lead and direct souls to God.

World Youth Day Reflection by Matthew DiCaro

Unimaginable. That would be the most appropriate

adjective for describing my World Youth Day experience. It

was by far one of the best experiences of my life, and will

most definitely stay that way.

In fact, this wonderful experience almost did not

happen. The fear of terrorism almost kept us at home. But we

pilgrims, small but mighty, conquered that obstacle knowing

that the Lord is with us and as Pope Francis said “The Lord

does not keep his distance, but is near and real. He is in

our midst and he takes care of us.”

The sense of unity was overwhelming during this

trip. Millions of Catholics from all over the world were

gathered in the beautiful city of Krakow. You would walk

down the street and see hundreds of pilgrims singing, dancing,

high fiving, and carrying their country’s flag. It did not matter

where you were from because we were all there for the same

purpose which is our faith. I truly experienced our faith is

action on this trip. I realized how our faith is a unifying factor

amongst millions of people all over the world and it truly is a

beautiful thing.

One of the most profound sense of unity was during

the Saturday night vigil. Over 2 million Catholics gathered in

this enormous field outside of the city with our Holy Father.

We all brought our gear to camp with and it truly was a

pilgrimage. We started the evening by kneeling down for the

adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. After a while you could

see the sea of candles starting to light up. Seeing millions of

people holding candles along with the Holy Father is an

experience that I will never forget.

Our pilgrimage was filled with faith, love, prayer,

and new friendships. It was an experience that I will never

forget. It not only brought me closer in my faith, but

strengthened it. It was a journey that I am overjoyed I was

able to partake in and I am glad I can relay it to you, my

fellow parishioners.

FOOD PANTRY Thanks to your generous donations we are able to help many

towels. The next time the food pantry will be open is

Saturday, August 27th from 10:00-11:30am. If you have any

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER NEWS SUMMER ENRICHMENT CAMPERS has a marvelous time

during Carnival Week. The beginning of the week the

campers were helping paint and decorate items for the

carnival. On Wednesday, The Carnival was in full swing!

Campers enjoyed games; spin art, a photo booth, a tattoo

station, a bouncy house, a sprinkler and a snack bar. For each

game that the children played, they were given a specific

number of tickets and with those tickets they were able to

“purchase” items from the snack bar. Our Carnival was not

only a Great time, but an educational one too!

A BIG Thank You goes out to everyone that made this

carnival a success! Thanks to Michael Vernotica and Lisa

Paradiso for their time and dedication to this outstanding

carnival! A list of Volunteers also made our carnival run

smooth: Lily Michaels, Kyle Cunningham, Ashley Fusella,

Olivia Capasso and Elizabeth Malkinski. Our summer camp

and school staff also came out to help us: Carol Freeman,

Rachel Freeman, Anthony Agrifolio, Desiree Lipoma, Laurie

Bloch, Charles Hilgendorff, Barbara Hansen, Sandra Sheridan

and Valerie Tino, we couldn’t have done it without you! We

would also like to thank everyone who donated supplies and

carnival items: Jess Petti, Cristina Pignataro. Our Food

donations include Godfather, Scoop Coop, Avellino’s and

Esposito’s, thank you for you generosity.

Enrollment is still open for September 2016! Register

early to reserve your spot! Classes are filling up quickly!

SACRAMENTS Baptism

We celebrate the sacrament of Baptism most Sundays. Parents are welcome to have the Baptism celebrated either at a week-end Mass or at the Liturgy of Baptism at 1:15. To make arrangements for Baptism please call Father Owen or Fr. Matthew. Godparents must be confirmed and be active members of the church and attend Mass regularly.

Sacrament of Reconciliation Every Saturday at 4:45 – 5:15 (or by appointment with Fr. Owen or Fr. Matthew).

Sacrament of Marriage Please contact Fr. Owen or Fr. Mathew and set up an appointment. Any Catholic couple needs approximately a year to prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage, which includes sessions with the Priest celebrating the marriage and attendance at Pre-Cana conferences.

Sacrament of the Sick / Hospital Visits At St. Rose we are strongly committed to the spiritual care of the sick. Because of privacy laws, hospitals and nursing homes are not allowed to release the patient’s religious affiliation. Therefore, we must depend on families of our sick parishioners to inform us of their whereabouts and condition. Please notify the parish office of any need for a home or hospital visit.

RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for people who seek full initiation in the Catholic Church through the reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, which are received at Easter Vigil.
