Dear Parents and Members of St. Patrick’s School Community,
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER—JOHN 15: 1—8: Last Sunday’s Gospel from
John provides the parable of the vine and the vinedresser and it is
a powerful insight into Christian life as the following reflection
from Greg Sunter demonstrates.
At first glance, it appears that there is a certain ruthlessness
about the image of the vinedresser pruning the vine: perform or
perish! However, the process of cutting away and pruning branches
is an incredibly nurturing action; it is removing the unproductive
portions of the plant so that the vine has an even better
opportunity to produce fruit in the next season. It an act of love;
not an act of economic rationalism. Within our own lives we are
called to make decisions about which of our thoughts and actions
are life-giving (fruit-bearing) and which are unproductive;
negative; crippling; life-diminishing. If we are able to ‘prune’
our life-diminishing thoughts and actions we allow ourselves the
freedom and the ability to really flourish. Feelings of jealousy,
greed, resentment, self-doubt and lack of confidence can limit our
ability to be fully alive just as addictive and harmful behaviours
can physically take away our ability to perform at our best. It is
only through a process of cutting away and pruning that we can
nurture ourselves to realise the beauty of our potential.
MAY—HONOURING MARY THE MOTHER OF GOD—May is the month set aside
in our Catholic tradition to honour Mary, the Mother of God. Like
most mothers, she lived for her child. It is fitting that we
celebrate Mothers Day during May also. All mothers, grandmothers,
and those like mothers to us are warmly invited to our liturgy and
‘high tea’ on Friday 11 May starting at 2.15pm. Students will
conduct a liturgy and share their reflections about their mothers
before serving their mothers and grandmothers a delicious afternoon
tea. Please find your invitation attached to today’s newsletter. We
would appreciate your RSVP by Monday 7 May (which is different to
the date on the attached invitation).
You may like to pray the Hail Mary at home during the month of
May.
Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God
Pray for us sinners now
And at the hour of death.
Amen.
As partners in Catholic Education and open to God’s presence, we
pursue the fullness of life for all. St. Patrick’s School is a
Child-safe school.

This week in the Junior Classroom we are reading 'The Nowhere
Box' and making predictions and summarising the story. Foundation
students have learnt a new sound 'r' with their new friend Rosie
Rabbit. Year 1 students are working on ‘-im’ words in Spelling and
Year 2 students are working on 'fl' and 'pl' words. We are working
on more narrative writing this week by writing stories together and
then practising writing it ourselves.
During Music, we have been exploring the iPad app 'Garage Band'
and making our own music beats.
In Chinese we have been learning the numbers 1-10 and singing
them in a rap song.
During the reading block the seniors have been focusing on a
poem called 'Beach Orchestra'. This poem explores the natural music
that we hear all around us everyday.
The students have been focusing on persuasive texts during
writing. They have also been exploring the use of emotive language
within their writing, as a way to engage and influence the
reader.
The senior students have been focusing on Money within the
numeracy block. They have been engaging in a variety of activities
exploring how to use money in everyday life situations.
In Religious Education the seniors have been engaging in the
Unit 'For Creation, Praise'. The students have been exploring the
context behind the Creation story and linking into their prior
knowledge.
BEST WISHES TO MS LEONARD—You may be aware that Ms Leonard has
been absent this week. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope that
she is able to return to work on Monday. A huge thank you to Mrs
Creek for being available at short notice to teach most of Ms
Leonard’s classes this week.
NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA—Attached today is
information for parents about the Nationally Consistent Collection
of Data (NCCD). From 2019 onwards the Students with Disability
program will be replaced with the NCCD. The information is for all
parents, not just those who have children with a diagnosed
disability. Please take the time to read the information sheet so
you are fully informed about the NCCD. If you have any questions
about the NCCD then please speak to Kathy.
NAPLAN—Students in Years 3 and 5 will complete NAPLAN
assessments on Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 May.
Attached to today’s newsletter is information about NAPLAN. Please
take the time to read this information and speak to Kathy if you
have any questions about NAPLAN.
RESILIENCE, RIGHTS AND RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS—On Wednesday
night teachers attended a professional learning session at Nhill
College about the Respectful Relationships program. Ros Pretlove
took staff from St. Patrick’s School and Nhill College briefly
through the eight modules of the program as well as allowing staff
to participate in a number of activities that are included in the
program. St. Pat’s teachers enjoyed the opportunity to meet and
work with Nhill College staff and gain a better understanding of
the Respectful Relationships program and its application for our
students. Our appreciation is extended to Nhill College for
inviting us to attend and to Ros for facilitating the training at a
time that allowed all staff to attend.
SCHOOL PHOTOS—School photo day is scheduled for Wednesday 30th
May starting at 9am. Please ensure that your child/ren is/are in
full school winter uniform including white or navy socks and black
shoes. If your child is currently wearing sports shoes to school
please endeavour to source black school shoes in the next three
weeks.
READING AWARDS—Congratulations to Sienna and Riley who have both
read 30 take home books for the year. Congratulations to Riley and
Sienna’s parents who have invested in their children’s education by
listening to them read nightly on a regular basis.
PROJECT COMPASSION—Congratulations to our St Patrick’s School
community for raising $174.70 during Lent for Project Compassion.
$41.50 of this total came from the hot dog day organised by the
Year Six students on the last day of Term One.
FOOTY TIPPING—Mrs Pilgrim is leading the way in our local footy
tipping competition with 36 correct selections. Jobe is a close
second on 34 followed by Mrs Bendall on 33. It’s always interesting
to see who can predict how the teams will go for the whole season
given that all selections were made before the first round was
played. Good luck everyone for this weekend’s games.
SARAH MACDONALD VISIT—Sarah will be visiting the school on
Wednesday 9 May. Appointment times for some students are attached
to this newsletter. If you are unsure of your child’s appointment
time then
-
please ring the school to determine the time for your child.
