From the Pastor’s Desk

With all the attention being paid to what is going on in Washington, D.C., one of the issues that surely needs coverage but is almost totally ignored is the Annual March For Life which took place this past Friday, January 24th in our nation’s capital. Tens of thousands of people gathered once again to speak up for the defense of the children growing in the womb whose lives are threatened by abortion. Each year more than 900,000 abortions are performed in our country, and since the legalization of abortion in our country on January 22, 1973, more than 60 million children have lost their lives. There is a lot of controversy about the large number of immigrants seeking to enter our country illegally and what to do with them, but in the media and politically, nothing is be said about the havoc and horror wreaked by abortion. Why? Have we hardened our hearts, dulled our consciences, and become ambivalent? When I pray the breviary one of the introductory Psalms is Psalm 95 and these words jumped out last week as I was praying them: Today, listen to the voice of the Lord: “Do not grow stubborn, as your fathers did in the wilderness, when at Meriba and Massah they challenged me and provoked me, although they had seen all of my works. Forty years I endured that generation. I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray and they do not know my ways.’ So I swore in my anger, ‘They shall not enter into my rest.’” (Psalm 95:8-11) The Jewish people had been freed from slavery in Egypt and experienced the wonder of God opening the Red Sea before them to escape the pursuing army of the Egyptians. Now in their thirst, they complain, which shows they still did not trust God and His way. Miraculously God told Moses to strike a rock and water flowed forth to quench their thirst, but their lack of trust prevented them from finding peace in their faith. Instead they chose to look only to themselves for what they wanted, thought they needed, and how they were going to get it. In the Gospel last Sunday, John the Baptist pointed out Jesus and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) The sin of the world is not the lumping together of all the personal sins every human being has committed, but our refusal as nations and groups to acknowledge God. It is when our connection with God is broken, lost sight of, or obscured. Surely that describes the reason we have the horror of abortion legally entrenched, supported, and defended in our nation by the majority of politicians, the media, and so many of our fellow Americans. How sad. The punishment on the Israelites who questioned and complained to God at Meribah was that they would not find the peace and hope of God that is the source of all moral goodness and unity with one another. The other factor to consider is eternity. One day we will leave this world and look for entrance into eternal life and joy in God’s presence. If we deny Him and His ways in this life, that hope is not a reality that will happen. The words of Psalm 95 will be dreadful to hear at the end: You shall not enter into my rest. The evil of abortion has divided us as citizens and is

certainly seen in the political scene in Washington, D.C. and in our state governments. Once a group defends an unconscionable evil there is no peace. Any person or group that defends evil becomes evil and is all too easily led to wreak havoc in our midst. Another issue that is almost completely ignored and swept under the rug is pornography. This evil fills the Internet with countless sights that are only a click away from viewing on our electronic devices. Recently I read an article by a man who researches the harm this evil causes mentally, spiritually, physically, and morally. His research indicates that 100% of our young people are viewing these sights, some as young as fifth grade. Every young person seems to have a personal phone. Mom and dad are you checking on what they are viewing? That is not a matter of invading their privacy, but seeking to help them be healthy mentally, spiritually, physically, and morally. We as the Church surely have a black eye because of the immoral abuse of children by clergy. How can we speak out about this evil, the evil of abortion, and other issues? It is not how can we speak out, but how can we not speak out? There is too much at stake to remain silent and let the technological and moral direction of our society ruin the individual lives of our young people as well as the future of our nation. Tonight (Sunday) we are having a gathering in our church building at 7:30 P.M. to once again organize 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting to overcome the evil of abortion. Last year we joined with six other parishes in our area where we each took a day of the week and prayed in front of Planned Parenthood on Maple Avenue here in Smithtown all during Lent. At the end of the day, that particular parish had a holy hour to conclude our prayers. I was part of this last year and was amazed and gratified by the number of people in our parish who took a shift all during the day to pray on Maple Avenue. It was good to hear the horns honking in agreement and sad to hear the words of disagreement and see the gestures of anger toward us. But there we were, signs of God’s truth, hope, and love for our fellow citizens. We are not looking to deprive anyone of freedom, only looking to defend the lives of those most vulnerable and innocent among us. Our 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting were so powerful last year that we are looking to expand these efforts with our fellow believers in Nassau County, going to an abortion facility there. We are only looking to enter into the rest of God which is the foundation of our personal and communal lives. Where evil has a say in who we are and what we do, there is no peace. Let us pray: Thank you Father for the gift of life. Thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus. May my gratitude inspire and sustain me in doing everything I can to respect the lives of all people and to do all in my power to end abortion and everything else that harms, abuses, or threatens human life. Give me the courage and strength to live in your image today and every day of my life. Amen.

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catholic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, including our parishioners. We value your input, so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org for more information, and email [email protected] to give feedback or find out more ways to get involved.

President Trump Safeguards the Right to Religious Freedom in Public Schools

On January 16th, National Religious Freedom Day, President. President Donald Trump said, "This afternoon, we're proudly announcing historic steps to protect the First Amendment right to pray in public schools...It is a sacred principle of our Republic that government must never stand between the people and God. Yet, in public schools around the country, authorities are stopping students and teachers from praying, sharing their faith, or following their religious beliefs.... Tragically, there is a growing ...impulse...that seeks to punish, restrict, and even prohibit religious expression." (1)

For seven years, Catholics for Freedom of Religion has been reporting instances of students being denied their right to religious expression in their schools. The Trump administration has updated the guidelines, first issued under President Bill Clinton, and is sending them to every school that receives federal funds. The Guidance on Constitutionally Protected Prayer and Religious Expression in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools can be read on the Department of Education website: www.ed.gov “These actions by the president should prompt discussions among parents, clergy and educators that will end the too common suppression of students’ appropriate expressions of their faith.” said Barbara Samuells, President of Catholics for Freedom of Religion. To monitor compliance with the guidelines, every public school will continue to certify to their state that they have no policy that conflicts with students' religious freedom rights. As before, a public school's federal funding could be suspended if the school is not in compliance.” (2)

The holy hour in our modern rat race is necessary for authentic prayer. Our world is one of speed in which intensity of movement is a substitute for lack of purpose; where noise is invoked to drown out the whisperings of conscience; where talk, talk, talk gives the impression that we are doing something when really we are not; where activity kills self-knowledge won by contemplation… - Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Readings: Malachi 3: 1-4; Hebrews 2: 14-18;

Luke 2: 22-40 (or Luke 2: 22-32 shorter)

Focus Questions:

Children & Family Reflection:

Attention Level 2 Students: For your convenience, copies of the cards on which you write your gospel reflections will be included in the bulletin most Sundays. Feel free to use the form below and to make copies. Your reflection may be dropped into the collection basket as your gift to our parish. (Please provide your first and last name. Only first names will be used in the bulletin.)

Second grade students from our Religious Formation Program and our school are asked to read the “Children and Family Reflection” column in the bulletin and write down their thoughts on cards provided for them. They then drop the cards in the collection basket on Sunday as their contribution to our parish. Below are a few of their reflections:.

Words of Wisdom from our Level 2 Students

Gospel Reading: Matthew 3: 13-17 Children and Family Reflection: Talk to your family members about the day you were baptized.

What do they remember about it?

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”

• On my baptism, all my friends and family came to celebrate. - Erin • My family was excited the day I was baptized because I was beginning my journey into my Catholic faith. - Jack • My family said that I looked really cute in my white suit and I slept most of the day and they were proud of me. -

Craig • All of my cousins came to celebrate and we had a party. - Madden • It was very special because I was accepted into the Church. - Paige • When I was baptized, I remember I was picked up by my mom and the priest dumped water on my head. -

Angelina

1. Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the temple in obedience to Jewish law. Talk about a time you did something out of obedience.

2. Simeon was attentive to the Holy Spirit. When have you been attentive to the Holy Spirit?

3. Mary accepts both good and bad predictions given regarding her Son. How do you accept the bad along with the good?

(continued on next page)

Simeon had waited to see Jesus and was happy to see him. When have you been happy to see someone?

Love actually is a great act of the will. It's when I say, "I desire your good, not for my sake but for yours.” To love is to break out of the black hole of the ego and say, "My life is about you.” - Bishop Robert Barron
