We are Here to Help!

Not only is the coronavirus a serious health crisis, it has brought about economic hardship as well. Please know that our Parish Outreach office is open from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday, should you be in need of food or other services. For the safety of all concerned, we will be serving people outside the rectory. Please call our office ahead of your visit at 631-265-2668 and speak through our intercom system at the side door of the rectory. Food items will be brought out to your car. If you are in the position to donate food, please bring donations to the Parish Outreach office between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Please use our intercom system and we will pick up donations at the side door. During the summer months, food pantry donations typically decline. Please keep us in mind during the summer. Contributions of fresh produce from your gardens are also welcome.

Thank you for your generosity during these difficult times.

Who or what would we do anything for? While we dream about winning the lottery and having abundant cash at our fingertips, we know deep down in our hearts it is the people we would share it with, not just a resource for any and every whim and desire. But we don’t need financial security to have a treasure. In today’s Gospel (Matthew 13:44-52), Jesus tells the parable of the man who finds a buried treasure in a field and sells everything he has to acquire it. We are who we are because of the gift of life. When we were born, we were embraced as a treasure by our parents. As time passes, we come to see what a treasure our parents are to us. One of the great joys of being a priest is celebrating Baptisms and seeing the joy in the parents and all present with them. As we grow and mature we come to see that we not only have people who are a treasure in our lives, we also see we are a treasure. Not only are we treasures to one another, we are a treasure to God. That is why Jesus came into our world and into our lives. He made the ultimate sacrifice in giving His life for us on the cross. The fruit and life of that sacrifice fills us with His hopeful presence, love, and Spirit. In the first reading for Mass today (1 Kings 3:5, 7-12), we see God appearing to King Solomon telling him to ask for whatever he wants. Solomon’s response shows His treasure lies not in his power, position, or material wealth, but in God’s wisdom: "Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge your people and to distinguish right

from wrong. For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?” Seeking the treasure of God’s wisdom made Solomon a treasure to His people. How good it is to humbly recognize the love and goodness of God in our lives. All life is a gift from God. To live our lives every day with this belief opens our minds and hearts to the treasure our faith is, the treasure of the people in our lives are, and the treasure we are to God and one another. When we recognize the treasure we are to God, we can more easily recognize how we and everyone else are also treasures to Him. That is the road to inner and outer peace. I conclude with this passage from James 3:13-18: Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace.

Dear Friends: Pope Francis likens the stone that sealed the tomb of Jesus to the tombstones of the pandemic that “threatens to bury all hope...” But he reminds us that “we are not alone, the Lord goes before us on our journey, and removes the stones that paralyze us. This is the hope that no one can take from us. The disciples of Jesus discovered something that we are now learning: No one is saved alone.” Support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal allows us to continue to serve so many in our community as you journey with us to bring hope to others. Through the Catholic Ministries Appeal we support the ministries that help us as we build up the Body of Christ, such as Pro-life efforts, formation of seminarians for the priesthood and Faith Formation and education of our children and young adults. We have been working together with our schools to assist the underserved to get much needed internet service so that children are able to continue their education and parents can work from home. It helps to support Catholic Charities and our Parish Outreach programs. Catholic Charities meets the needs of Long Island throughout the year, but during times of crisis they are on the front lines providing emergency services to those in need; expanding food programs and services for seniors who are isolated or homebound. Our Parish Outreach programs are working diligently to meet the needs of the growing demand of families reaching out to them for help. During this unique time, there are so many ways to bring hope to others. One way, if you are able, is to provide assistance by making a gift to the 2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Your continued support is critical at this time. We are so grateful for your generosity and commitment. Please know that you and your family are remembered in my daily prayer and Masses. Sincerely in Christ,

Giving Made Easier Churches now routinely offer online giving for church donations. There are many reasons for this. Fewer people are using cash and checks. Mass attendance at your home parish is usually interrupted by vacations, business trips, illness, snow storms, etc. And many people find it easier (and greener) to not have to deal with church envelopes.

St. Patrick’s offers several forms of online giving:

(1) Faith Direct: Signing up for Faith Direct allows you to indicate a weekly contribution amount that is automatically withdrawn from your account. Just go to faithdirect.net or download the Faith Direct app from the App Store. Our Parish code is NY51.

(2) Our website: You can contribute at any time by going to our website: stpatricksmithtown.org. Just click the “Donate” button at the top right.

(3) Our Parish App: In addition to its many other features, the OneParish App has a donation page that allows quick and easy one-time or recurring donations. You can download the One Parish App at the App Store.

(4) Our newest electronic giving option is “Text to Give a program set up by the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Just send a text message to 516-271-3338. In the message, type 155parishstpatrick - you will receive a message back with a link that you can use to make a donation.

One of the great advantages of the Internet is having access to so many resources. This includes spiritual resources. St. Patrick’s pays an annual fee so that all our parishioners can sign up for FREE to FORMED. FORMED is an online platform that offers 24/7 access to the best Catholic content on almost any device, including your computer, smartphone and tablet. You will have instant access to thousands of books, audio talks, movies, documentaries, studies and more. FORMED also includes excellent content for children.

To sign up for FORMED, go to: https://stpatricksmithtown.formed.org

Are you on our Parish Email List?

Our parish stays in touch with parishioners via email concerning important announcements, Christmas and Easter schedules, and daily reflections from our pastor, Fr. Walden. What is evangelization all about? What role does the Church expect ordinary Catholics to play in spreading the Catholic Faith? Dr. Scott Hahn, author and renowned theologian, challenges cradle Catholics to witness to the Faith through everyday life. He presents proven and effective ways to touch those who have fallen away from the Church, even those with the most hardened of hearts.

First Saturday Devotion Saturday, August 1st

and every First Saturday of the month at 8:00 AM in the church

Come join us in this very special time of prayer. Rosary beads and prayers available in the church. (No experience necessary.)

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over—twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

First They Came for the Statues and the Churches…

As Americans and as Christians we must expect and demand the rule of law be enforced in compliance with the 1st Amendment freedoms which support all of our inalienable rights. May God strengthen us to pray, speak and act to defend these five critical freedoms: 1. Freedom of Religion – the right of free conscience and free exercise of conscientious beliefs 2. Freedom of Speech - the right to speak freely and openly, without fear 3. Freedom of the Press – the right to communicate facts, opinions, ideas and beliefs 4. Freedom of Assembly – the right to peaceably assemble 5. Freedom to petition the Government for redress of grievances Silence in the face of evil is itself evil; God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Lutheran Pastor, theologian, anti-Nazi activist martyred at Flossenburg Concentration Camp, 1945 Across the country, churches and religious statues have been the target of vandalism, terrorism and arson. - Boston, Massachusetts: A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was set aflame in St. Peter's Church. "Whoever is responsible for the desecration of the Holy Mother's statue is clearly a troubled soul...Mary represents all that is good and pure in our world," said a diocese spokesperson. On a hillside near the lake of Galilee, Jesus’s disci-ples listened to his gentle and urgent voice; as gentle as the landscape of Galilee itself, as urgent as a call to choose between life and death, between truth and falsehood.
