SCRIP NEWS Albertson’s has informed me that they are discontinuing the Community Part-ners Program as of January 31, 2010. St. Matthew’s will no longer receive a re-fund when you use your Albertsons Preferred Card. However, we can still bene-fit from shopping at Albertsons by using Albertsons gift cards which can be pur-chased at the Scrip table. They are in $25 & $100 values and we receive 4% from each. In 2009, 74 members were enrolled in the Community Partners Program which paid us $1712.16. We earned $407.00 from only 12 members who purchased gift cards. As you can see, we can earn a lot using the gift cards. If you have questions, please contact Gary Kellogg our Scrip Coordinator.

Sierra Madre UMC in October.
For 2010 Beth and I plan to
attend a retirement seminar
April 6-8, 2010. St. Mat-
thew’s has been a wonderful
appointment with a lot of
good members and I con-
sider it a high point in my
ministry to end my career
and retire from here.
In Christ’s Service Together,
Pastor Bob Ferguson
THE SHEPHERD’S PEN
At St. Matthew’s UMC, where the
people are seeing and perceiving
God’s blessing, they remain enthusi-
astic and are working hard. Our
Sunday school continues to provide quality
Christian Education for our pre-school through
high school. Our worship team continues to
provide marvelous programming through our
music program in chancel choir, children’s
choir, and bell choir. Sunday morning worship
is greatly enhanced by our children’s messages
and the puppet program. Our Angel Dancers
became the stimulus for more young families to
attend church. Out of that, came the Young
Families Fellowship and out of that came the
Dangerous Boys Club. And of course all our
ushers and sound teams make sure we have
seating, bulletins, and all can hear the speakers.
Our Bring team continues to do an excellent job
of outreach to new residents, greeting people
on Sunday and providing follow up visits. Our
grow team has promoted growth in relationship
to God, one another and others through two
small group studies and continued support for
our regular study/support groups. And the
membership and visitor tracking has helped in
pastoral care. Our serve team has done a fabu-
lous job of keeping us involved in practical
Christianity by their various community servant
ministries. And lastly a New Neighbor letter is
mailed to those who are new to our neighbor-
hood inviting them to worship at St. Matthew’s.
Administratively the Finance Commit-
tee has done a good job of keeping track of the
receipts. It has also kept records of expenditures
according to our budget and informed our coun-
cil when we needed to check our spending.
Even though the pledge receipts were behind, we
still managed to keep up. For 2010, the pledges
fell short of the proposed budget. Finance
brought it to the Ad. Council and measures
were taken to reduce the budget to pre-2009 lev-
els in most areas for the sake of balancing the
books. This was done in the hope that the Coun-
cil would be able to make changes later in the
year should pledges increase or the offerings rise
above that expected. Staff Parish Relations
Committee has met quarterly this year under
able leadership of its chairman. He became
chairman at the end of the first quarter on elec-
tion by the Council. The Lay Leadership De-
velopment Committeehas met monthly since
September. They have worked hard to fill va-
cancies on our boards and committees. Their
role of doing leadership development has lagged
due to pastoral preoccupation and busy sched-
ules. Their report is elsewhere in this Charge
Conference Manual. The Children’s Center
Board has been busy this year trying to work out
budget and planning issues due to low enroll-
ments the last year and a half. In late summer
task groups were set to enhance the curriculum
and public appeal of our pre-school. It is the
pre-school enrollment which makes the differ-
ence for them financially. The trend in our area
has shown enrollments down all over. Steward-
ship Committee has managed to raise a couple
of thousand dollars through fund raisers. In the
fall they promoted a study in cooperation with
the small group coordinators for the stewardship
campaign. Presently we have no stewardship
chairperson for 2010.
The people of St Matthews are a
dedicated, loving, and giving people. Circum-
stances have challenged their abilities to be there
sometimes and that has made it hard on them
and hard on the ministry to which we are called.
The chief ministry undergirding all of this is our
Prayer Ministry which keeps us all covered,
especially those in crisis. Our church staff also
added to our effectiveness; Carol, my Adminis-
trative Assistant in the office; Narima, our Chil-
dren’s Center Director; Kory our Music Direc-
tor; Arian, our Accompanist, and Ashley, our
Nursery Attendant.
I have tried to give pastoral leadership
to all of the above. I am not sure that I have
been effective in all of these areas. After 33
years of full time ministry, I am tired and have
decided to retire at Annual Conference this June
of 2010. One thing that went very well this year
was the capital campaign. The select commit-
tee made up of Trustees, Finance, Council
representatives followed through. The church
is enjoying a much needed renovated parking
lot and a larger functional kitchen to facilitate
fellowship around meals.
For continuing education I went to
San Diego to attend a Leadership Seminar led by
Dr Kennon Callahan. There was a lot of good
information on discipleship training and ministry
development. In the fall I attended a district
Webinar on leadership dynamics in the local
church, some drawbacks and some break-
throughs. I also attended leadership training at

SERVANT MINISTRY NEWS At the end of each year individuals and organizations look back on the year to put things in perspective. The Servant Ministry Team did that as well. We want you to know how you have been the hands of Christ in the last few months. Knit for Kids involves a dozen or so dedicated souls who knit prayer shawls for adults and sweaters for children. So far 54 prayer shawls and 50 sweaters have been knitted with love; 10 sweaters were delivered in January. In the last half of 2009 you sent 22 cell phones to be recycled and used by the organization End Family Violence. In December, 64 homeless were fed as a part of the Winter Shelter Program. This is a significant rise in numbers, especially families.
You provided six Thanksgiving dinners for families here at St. Matthew’s as well as those in the community. The Christmas outreach sent gift cards for food and presents to six families. The Christmas Shoppe is sponsored by ACTION, Area Chris-tians Taking Initiative on Needs. A dozen or so from St. Mat-thew’s including members of the Girl Scout Troop lead by Kristin Bertrand, served 400 families in the community.
As you can see, you have been busy in serving Christ through serving others. Unfortunately there is no end to the need. Please consider these future areas of service: Donations for Hunger Sunday are accepted every Sunday of the month, when you can, bring cans and boxes of food to help our community food pantry. Children’s Hunger Fund is sending boxes of food to the children of Haiti. Winter Shelter Homeless dinner will be on Feb. 21st. One Great Hour of Sharing is the Methodist church wide fund raising effort for UMCOR. By supporting UMCOR on March 14th, we fund the organization so that 100% of gifts to disasters, such as Haiti, go to those in need.

NOT “IF” BUT “WHEN” by Jack Doman
The devastation and chaos that we have seen in Haiti should be a wake up call to us all. An earthquake of the magnitude that Haiti experienced is a very real possibility in our area. The lack of water, food and medical supplies that we have viewed is a reality that we could face, if we do not prepare. While international aid is being funneled into Haiti, we could expect that aid would come our way in a similar situation. However, it takes time for that aid to arrive. Remember the difficulties that occurred in New Orleans. I hope that you have been keeping up with the suggested preparations that we have been send-ing through the monthly newsletter. If not, it isn’t too late to start. The steps to preparation have been coming in small doses so that the task isn’t overwhelming in terms of time or money. We are called to be of service to others. Christ said to Peter and also to us, “Feed my sheep”. In a disaster at home, before we can offer aid to our neighbors, we have to be able to provide for our family. Remember the instructions on the airlines, “Put your own oxygen mask on before you try to help an-other”. In Haiti, our United Methodist Committee on Relief has been there from before the beginning of this latest disas-ter. Perhaps you contributed money to UMCOR or other relief agencies. While that disaster fades from the headlines, the slow hard work of recovery continues. If you wish to make a donation to continuing to help the people of Haiti in their struggle, please make a check to: St. Matthew’s UMC and put Haiti Emergency on the memo line. UMCOR, because it is a Methodist agency whose administrative costs are covered by the churches, 100% of all money raised for this any emer-gency goes directly to aiding the victims.
