Greetings of peace as we enter the summer season.

I really enjoy the summer months and always had

a great time when I was out of school and doing

“summer stuff.” It seems so strange that those

memories have endured over the years, nevertheless

so much remains clear and vivid in my mind.

I begin by saying “thank you” to all of you who, as

parents of our school-aged children spent some

serious time these past months truly working with

your children and helping them in academic and developmental areas. Your

precious time was certainly not lost as they learned from you and

experienced with you the joy and perfect responsibility of parenting—being

the first educators of your children in all of the important areas of life.

Now, I am taking the opportunity to let you know that our wonderful

Catholic Schools are preparing to partner up with you once again as I

announce the news that our Catholic schools will be opening for our Fall

schedule according to our regular schedule and policies, in conjunction with

State and local policies as they affect us. The COVID pandemic has hit us

all very hard and has almost re-created society and social constructs in some

serious new ways. We, Catholic school educators, are taking all of this

“new information” very seriously and are planning for its impact on our

schools and the lives of our children. We are all looking to the new

academic year as one of challenging growth and direction. Thus, it will

require the best from all of us.

As you should well know by now, I am an avid supporter of Catholic

education and see its greatest articulation for the future in Catholic schools.

The fullness of teaching a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is our first

and most successful lesson in the Catholic school. You may send your sons

or daughters to so many different schools—good schools—in the area

encompassed by our diocese. None of them, however, will create and

sustain an environment where your children will first learn the life of grace

that is the truth of Jesus’ gift to them as it is offered in our Catholic schools.

That, my dear parents, is the first tenet of Catholic school policy.

As we look forward to challenging the hearts and souls of your children—to

claim them for Christ; we look forward to the exciting varieties of

appropriate vistas of thought, verbal and physical expression, expansive

brain games and emotional achievement, the very best in Catholic learning,

the fullness of faith and reason.

Finally, dear brothers and sisters—mothers and fathers—this future will be

offered to your children by our administrators, teachers, and professional

staffs, all of whom share enthusiasm for the education of your children. You

may rest assured that your children will return to our schools—the large and

the small—with our promise to offer them what you want for them, an

extension of your willingness to prepare them for the world ahead of them

with a solid education, positive value, and purposeful virtue supported by

the advantage of the Catholic Tradition. Be assured of my support for you

as parents and my prayers for you as families—domestic churches—where

Jesus dwells and the Truth is taught. God be with you.

+ Bishop William P. Callahan, OFM Conv.

Coronavirus Prayer - O Mary, you always brighten our path as a

sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of

the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining

steadfast in faith. O loving Mother, you know what we need, and we

are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee. Intercede

for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician, for those who have

fallen ill, for those who are vulnerable, and for those who have died.

Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety

of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure.

Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the

Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon himself our

sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead us, through the

Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire You with

all my heart. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, I ask you

to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already in my heart and unite myself to You

completely. Please do not let me ever be separated from You. Amen.

Dear Friends in Christ, June 26, 2020

Summer greetings to you! Charles Dickens wrote in Oliver Twist: “Spring flew swiftly by, and summer came; and

if the village had been beautiful at first, it was now in the full glow and luxuriance of its richness.” Due to the

ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this summer, though beautiful outside, is unlike any in past memory. Since the

pandemic reached America’s shores, nearly every aspect of our daily lives has been impacted. I write to you today

to announce one more change: the cancellation of Saint Mary’s summer picnic, originally scheduled for Sunday,

August 23, 2020.

The parish picnic committee unanimously recommended to me to cancel this year’s parish picnic due to the

ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. All the other parishes in the deanery have cancelled their picnics as well. I took the

time to consult with the parish pastoral council and the parish finance council before making any decision. After

careful deliberation, and with the best information available, I have made the decision to cancel the parish picnic

deeming it to be the only responsible and prudent option.

As you all know, the task of organizing the parish picnic is heavily dependent on many volunteers who aid in this

effort. The parish cannot hold the picnic without the ability to ensure the safety, confidence, and comfort of all

involved, including our volunteers, our guests, and our community—and everyone’s safety must be the chief

priority. Even though the “Safer at Home” order has expired and things are slowly reopening, it is impossible to

predict what August will look like in our county and throughout the state.

The parish picnic is the largest fundraiser for the parish. Since there will not be the usual income from the picnic

this year, I ask that you take part in a “silent picnic” instead. In your conscience, taking into consideration your own

family’s financial position, especially with the continued effects of the pandemic, I ask that you ponder what you

might have donated to the picnic and what you might have spent at the picnic itself. If you are able, please consider

donating that amount to the parish as your “silent picnic” offering. Any offering, no matter how small, is

appreciated and will help the parish make up from the lost income from the picnic. You may drop off your offering

at the parish office, send it via post, or drop it in the collection box in church. Please mark “silent picnic” on the

envelope or memo line of your check.

I also want to take this opportunity to announce that the 2021 picnic will be the final year for Eunice Zwicki as

picnic chair and Denise Glodowski as picnic co-chair. Leroy and Pat Wierzba will also be stepping down as bingo

coordinators. I thank them for their many years of service to our parish and the picnic. Our picnics could not have

happened without their many hours of service. If you or someone you know would like to step up and take over in

2022, please contact the parish or Eunice Zwicki. You will be able to shadow everything starting in January 2021

and learn the ropes. There’s even a guidebook to follow. Please consider it.

I know that many of you will be disappointed to hear of the picnic cancellation. I am disappointed by as well. We

look forward to our 2021 picnic. All of the contracts for 2020 have been transferred to 2021 and the monies

collected for the large raffle will go to the 2021 raffle. If you have any questions about the picnic cancellation,

please do not hesitate to contact the parish office. May God bless you. Go mbeannaí Dia is Muire duit!

In Christ,

Father Guanella
