If you have, please know that you will be required to be a registered parishioner of Saint Margaret Church for six months before we can issue a “le er in good standing” as required for sponsors to indicate they are striving to practice their faith by regular worship, as well as by being in good canonical standing and living lives consistent with Gospel values.

National Vocations Awareness Week

Dioceses throughout the United States will celebrate National Vocations Awareness Week (NVAW) from November 6-12, 2016. This is a particularly grace-filled time to preach about, pray for, and invite young people to discern their vocation. God calls us first to holiness and to live holiness as a priest, religious, married or single person. May our Lord guide each person to the awareness and knowledge of their vocation, and give them the courage to respond generously to His call.

November is the month of All Souls

We remember our faithful departed during the month of November. All are

welcome to inscribe the names of deceased loved ones in the Parish Book of Remembrance, near the baptismal font in the sanctuary.

If you wish to memorialize a loved one with a donation to the church, you may use the All Souls Remembrance Envelope at the entrances to the Church. You may place the envelope, with your loved one’s name inscribed, in the regular Offertory collection basket. Those names will be in repose near the baptismal font and Easter Candle. All our deceased loved ones will be remembered in each Mass during the month of November.

Bread of Life Food Pantry

Pantry will be open Nov. 8, from 5 -7 p.m. The pantry is open the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Please remember

to bring non-perishable food items to Mass each week.

In the event of bad weather, the pantry will not open as scheduled if the East Providence schools are dismissed early or are closed for the day. For more information, call 401-434-4742.

Archdiocese for Military Services

Next weekend we will hold the triennial collection for the Archdiocese for Military Services. Approved by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2012, and first taken by a select group of dioceses in 2013, this collection will be taken every three years to provide pastoral care and services to Catholics serving in the United States armed forces, enrolled in military academies, or undergoing treatment at a Veterans facility. During this month of November, dedicated to All Souls, I’ll be reflecting each week on the Rites of Christian Burial especially in view of the recent statement from the Holy

See concerning the proper disposition of cremains (human ashes). Pastoral sensitivity is most crucial at the time a loved one dies. The Church is very responsive to grieving families at this most vulnerable time. On the other hand, the Church does have pastoral guidelines to ensure that the dignity and meaning of a Christian burial is appreciated. This mini-series will touch on the Vigil of Prayer (Wake) for the Deceased, the Mass of Christian Burial, and the Final Commendation at the cemetery/mausoleum. Some words on cremation will be presented at that time.

All are familiar with a Saturday Vigil Mass, Christmas Eve Vigil Mass, and the Great Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. Anticipation is the best way to summarize these celebrations. The Vigil of Prayer (Wake) the day before the funeral permits us not only to gather as family, relatives and community to give thanks for the life of the deceased but also to reflect on the hope for the Resurrection for all those who preceded us in physical death. A staff member (Monsignor Darcy, Deacon Needham or Deacon Ba ey, or Sr. Perpetua) normally will lead the prayers at the funeral home if the family has decided to receive the public at calling hours.

The Rite of Christian Burial has options for the leader to use in praying for our deceased loved ones. Although not as common as in the past, a decade of the rosary can also be prayed. My pastoral practice is to greet the family and to be with them prior to the beginning of calling hours. I have found this very pastoral and helpful especially when a greater number of people are expected at the funeral home. It provides a private prayerful moment with their loved one. We gather in prayer to comfort the family, and ask God’s mercy on the deceased. It is very supportive for those who mourn as we look forward to the Resurrection.

Pray for your loved ones during this month. It is one of our spiritual works of mercy to pray for the dead and to entrust them to the Risen Lord.

Cry Room: To use or is it time to transition? The “Amens” of infants and toddlers within the congregation is great to hear. New family members are a joy for every parish. We are fortunate to have a worship space to accommodate babies and young children. It’s always a personal decision whether and when it is appropriate for a child to be in the main Church. Be considerate of others with your decision. Si ing on the end of the pew may make it easier if you need a private “time out” as the transition continues.
