In this week’s Gospel, Jesus talks about what it means to be prepared to receive the Kingdom. This follows a series of warnings and predictions by Jesus about the coming of the Son of Man. Jesus wants his disciples to understand that the exact day and time cannot be predicted. He teaches the disciples that they must remain vigilant so that they will not be caught unprepared. God’s love is unconditional and all embracing. However, that gift of love calls forth a response in us: the response being ready and open to receive it. All of the bridesmaids fall asleep; but when they hear the call to meet the bridegroom, only the wise ones are prepared to answer the call. Are we prepared to answer the call of our God? It’s one thing to wait for the bridegroom. But it’s not enough to wait for the bridegroom with others if our waiting is not accompanied by faith. God is not asking us only to ‘hang around’ – God wants us to become personally involved as a response to God’s engagement with us.

In the daily activities of life, we can easily find excuses for not attending to our spiritual lives. If not given top priority, prayer and reading Scripture risk becoming occasional activities rather than daily practices. In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that if we fail to give our spiritual life priority, we will find ourselves unprepared to receive Jesus. Daily prayer and spiritual practice keeps us ready to receive Jesus. The question remains for us to ask ourselves, are we ready to receive Jesus? Will we be prepared to receive him? Have a good week. Fr. Chris

STAND AND BE COUNTED

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its

dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and

responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner

makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism,

weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide

affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can

only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not, please consider registering. Registration forms

are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online

at www.st-justin.org

Just a reminder to check all parish activities, go to our website at www.st-justin.org. Click on the CALENDAR link, and you will find where it is being held and the times.

Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of November, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Diapers (Size 4- 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We had sixteen hundred years’ experience with one Eucharistic Prayer in our repertoire, and the liturgical reforms of the Council of Trent shaped the way we worshiped for four hundred years. In the last years of the Tridentine Mass, the early 1960s, we tended to see children as miniature adults. Fully rooted in the Sunday assembly by the decision of Pope Saint Pius X to push Communion back to the age of seven or so from the standard age of twelve to fourteen years during the early 1900s, children were still more tolerated than acknowledged. The Mass was in Latin, and by the 1960s the people had begun to regain their voices in the “dialogue Mass,” so the focus was on training little children to recite or sing in Latin.

The new attention to the experience of children, their ability to enter into ritual, their spontaneity, their ability to grasp key concepts in faith, felt “untraditional.” Yet we can trace in our tradition the ways in which children have long been given a special place in the assembly. From earliest times, boys have served in choirs and certain ministries in monasteries and in parish churches. Girls were sometimes entrusted to nuns, learning liturgical chants and the arts. Yet, in our day, the formation of a Lectionary for children and Eucharistic Prayers suited to them are truly tremendous breakthroughs in our treasury of prayer.
