Rediscover the Saints—Saint of the Week

The saint of the week is St. Irenaeus! Read his bio to the right, and read pages 21-23 in Rediscover the Saints.

Pastor’s Column

Dear Parishioners,

Today begins Catholic School’s Week. I often reflect back to my Catholic school days. I had the most wonderful time there at St. Charles. I had great priests, great teachers, great friends. The beauty of a Catholic school is that it is able to provide an atmosphere where the kids breath in the faith every day. It is an atmosphere of faith, love, and excellence. I am so very thankful for my Catholic school days.

We are blessed to have a Catholic school right here at St. Joe. It is a beautiful place. There is a lot of history there. St. Joe Parish was founded in 1868. The school was opened in 1876, with 60 students enrolled. The Franciscan Sisters of Oldenburg were the ones who opened the place. The nuns staffed St. Joe for a long time and the last one was Sr. Jonette Scheidler, OSF, who left in 1998. In 1958, the “new side” of the school (we still call it that) was built towards Broadway Street. They had to build it because they had run out of room on the old side. In 1960, there were 436 students enrolled, in addition to 60 kindergartners. What I wouldn’t give for those numbers now!!!!

144 years later, St. Joe School is still in operation. We currently have 121 students in preschool through fifth grade. We are a family here, and it is well worth the while to send your kids here.

Someone asked me why we don’t have 500 kids here now as we did in the 1960s. I think 4 things: 1) families were bigger [way more Catholic kids around]; 2) it was free; 3) more Catholic families were raising their kids Catholic; and 4) the nuns!

Still, we’re in a great place and are blessed by our school. Thanks for supporting it.

God bless you, Fr. Mike

Biography of the Saint of the Week

Biography of the Saint of the Week

St. Irenaeus Born: around 125 AD Died: 202 AD Feast Day: June 28 Irenaeus was born in a fishing province of Asia Minor, the geographic region located in the south- western part of Asia comprising most of what is present-day Turkey, where the memory of the Apostles was still cherished and Christians were numerous. His parents, being devout Christians, placed him under the care of St. Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna (who was a close friend and disciple of St. John the apostle), who oversaw the exceptional religious and philosophical education of his brilliant student.

After his ordination to the priesthood, Irenaeus was sent to the new Christian community at Lyons in Gaul (present day France) and later became its bishop in the year 177. In a short time, he converted nearly the whole country through his preaching. Almost all of his writings were directed against the heresy (the false teaching) of Gnosticism and its “veil of secrecy”, which he was determined to expose.

His most famous and most effective of these writings was his five-book treatise, “Against Heresy”. His work was widely circulated and succeeded in dealing the death blow to 2nd century Gnosticism.

In the year 202, he and many others suffered martyrdom under Emperor Severus at Lyons, but the exact date of his death is unknown. He died confessing faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Trinity.

Attention All Adorers with Sunday Hours—Starting Feb. 2

Starting on February 2nd, a diocesan-wide prayer campaign for priestly and religious vocations will begin in all 14 of the perpetual adoration chapels of the diocese. At St. Joseph, all those with holy hours on Sundays are asked to pray a rosary for priestly and religious vocations during their assigned hours. Handouts will be provided to adorers with Sunday hours and extra copies will be available in the chapel as well, which everyone is always invited to use! Re-member the power of the rosary, the power of pray-ing in front of Jesus asking “the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Mt. 9:38).

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

In this weekend’s Gospel, Matthew applies to Jesus the prophetic words of Isaiah: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.” In like manner, the psalm echoes Jesus words, “I am the light of the world; the one who follows me will have the light of life.”

Christianity is about light. Just as Jesus is light to the world, so His Church is to be light in a world of darkness. Light enables the beauty of things to be seen. We are the Church. We are called to make the beauty of the world shine. The light we bring to the world should lead in time to an end of all the world’s darkness: the alienation and oppression of peoples, the attacks on human life and dignity and disrespect for God’s creation.

This week as we take time to pray, may we talk to God about how our lives can be a light of goodness and respect to the people around us. We may ask God to help us change our habits to care more about God’s creation.

Sr. Joan

Seeking the Light

In today’s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes: “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, per-haps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom.

Word of God Sunday—Jan. 26

On September 30, 2019, Pope Francis decreed that the third Sunday of Ordinary Time henceforth will be celebrated as the Sunday of God’s Word. Please bring your bibles to Mass on January 25th & 26th. We will bless all Bibles present. The document title, Aperuit Illis (“He opened them”), refers to Luke 24:45, wherein we read that Christ opened the minds of the disciples so they could understand the Scriptures. Every day of the Church’s liturgical year involves reading Scripture at Mass and in the liturgy of the hours. Yet, precisely because Scripture is a regular part of the Church’s life, some can treat it as routine and unexceptional. The new Sunday celebration is meant to provide an annual reminder of just how precious God’s word is and to encourage us to appreciate that fact. Pope Francis points out a number of ways the Sunday will be celebrated, which we will do here at St. Joe and St. Vincent: It is important...that in the Eucharistic celebration the sacred text be enthroned, in order to focus the atten-tion of the assembly on the normative value of God’s word. On this Sunday, it would be particularly appropriate to highlight the proclamation of the word of the Lord and to emphasize in the homily the honor that it is due. In this regard, renewed efforts should be made to provide members of the faithful with the training needed to be genuine proclaimers of the word, as is already the practice in the case of acolytes or extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Pastors can also find ways of giving a Bible, or one of its books, to the entire assembly as a way of showing the importance of learning how to read, appreciate and pray daily with sacred Scripture, especially through the practice of lectio divina (n. 3). Here at St. Joe and St. Vincent, we will offer a bless-ing of all lectors. We are also blessed to have at St. Joe a group called Apostles of the Word, a group of Hispanic men and women whose goal is to take the Word of God to all people they know and share with them its beauty and power.

Youth Group Super Bowl Party—Feb. 2

The Youth Group will watch Superbowl LIV together on February 2nd at 6:30pm. This has become a great tradition and we are happy to continue it. Pizza will be served. All high schoolers are welcome!

No Mass Monday Evening—Jan. 27

Fr. Mike will be away from Shelbyville giving a talk about vocations to the Serra Club of Indianapolis on Monday, Jan. 27th. Since Fr. Paul is also out of town, there will be NO MASS on Jan. 27th. There will not be confessions or adoration either. Sr. Joan will lead a communion service at 5:00pm.

Church of Latin America—Jan. 25/26

St. Joseph and St. Vincent will have an additional collection this Saturday, January 25th and Sunday, January 26th for the Church in Latin America. This collection supports Churches throughout Latin Ameri-ca and the Caribbean. Projects include the work of evangelization formation of laity, religious and semi-narians, as well as youth ministry and catechesis. Funding is limited to programmatic expenses and excludes building construction except in cases of emergency.

Please use your Church in Latin America Enve-lope in your Sunday Envelope packet and drop it in the regular collection basket. Thank you for your generosity.

No Youth Group—Jan. 26

On account of the March for Life trip and the recuper-ation we look forward to after it, there will be no Youth group this Sunday.
