Her interim role will discontinue at the end of the winter season. CYO Sports at MPHM Parish will be discontinued during the 2016/17 school year if we do not have an Athletic Director in place by July 1, 2016. CYO is a great opportunity for youth and parents to celebrate being part of the larger Catholic com- munity. Please prayerfully consider being our volunteer Ath- letic Director. - Fr. Jim GOSPEL OF LUKE FINALE: On Saturday, January 9 th at 7:00 a.m. we will have the last and final class on the Gospel of Luke. This was post- poned from November. For those who have faith- fully attended the monthly classes, we will wrap up the session on Luke this day. I hope that you will be able to join us. Magnificat: Five Lessons of the Magi The unforgettable story of the journey of the Magi, as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew, is an artful summary of the principal dynamics of the spir- itual life. Watching the night sky with scrupulous attention for signs of God’s purpose, the Magi evoke the importance of alertness in the spiritual order. We must keep our eyes open to see what God is up to. For far too many people, the spiritual life never gets underway, precisely because they don’t pay atten- tion. Once they saw the star, they moved, despite the length of the journey and the dangers of the road. Sometimes people know what God wants them to do, but they don’t act, either out of fear or laziness or the influence of bad habits. In their confident journeying forth, the Magi teach us not to miss the propitious moment. They teach us to move. When they entered into Herod’s territory, the Magi caught the attention of the king. And when they spoke to him of the birth of a new King of the Jews, Herod became frantic and tried to use them in order to destroy the baby. A third lesson: when you walk the path that God has laid out for you, expect opposition. We live in a sinful, fallen world, and there will always be forces at cross purposes to God. Refusing to cooperate with Herod’s game, the wise men came to Bethlehem, found the child, and gave him their precious gifts. When you come to Christ, don’t give him your second best; break open the very best of yourself and make it a gift for him. Finally, they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod and so “they returned to their home country by another route.” As Fulton Sheen com- mented so magnificently: of course they did; for no one comes to Christ and goes back the same way he came! --Very Rev. RICHLAND COUNTY“SPREAD THE LIGHT”Richland County “Spread the

Light” is a localized approach to Proj-ect Blue Light which originated in1988 in Philadelphia when a relativeof a fallen police officer placed a me-morial blue light in a window alongwith other seasonal decorations. Its

intent was to show others that they are not alone in their lossand to remember the officer who died. The concept hascaught on nationwide. In 2015, a former Virginia policemancreated National Blue Light Week to start something positivefor law enforcement.

The goal of Richland County “Spread the Light” is to pro-mote pride in our local law enforcement, firefighters and firstresponders, partnership in all communities of RichlandCounty and peace in our neighborhoods. BLUE is the sym-bolic color of peace.

We are asking Richland County municipalities, resi-dents, businesses, churches, schools and organizations tocome together to help “Spread the Light” by putting a bluelight bulb on their porch or business during the week of Jan-uary 10-16, 2016, and beyond to show support for the menand women who put their lives on the line everyday to pro-tect and serve the citizens of Richland County.

HELP MAKE YOUR PARISH BETTER! Every parishhas areas where we can improve. One of these in our parish isvolunteering to take on responsibilities within the life of our parish.

I often hear, well they never asked me to do anything! It isnearly impossible, although at times I have come to and person-ally asked someone to do something, but for the most part, whenan article is written such as this, this invitation is to YOU!

Ministries continue to be needed in our parish! Even thoughI do weekly communion calls to the homebound and institution-alized, there are many facets of ministry within the Church, ourparish doesn’t touch! We need people like YOU to minister notonly to those here every Sunday but in homes, in prayer, andmany other areas. The more people that volunteer, the easier itis to reach out and keep our arms around our community.

I often hear we don’t understand why people stop coming toChurch, or why those people that used to sit in the second pewon the right hand side no longer come. One of the biggest rea-sons is because most Catholics feel that they are not welcomed.Resolving this dilemma is not easy! But with the help of many, the tasks becomes smaller.

In this Year of Mercy which began on Dec. 8th and will con-tinue throughout the next year, we here at St. Joseph CatholicChurch must reach out and become more active in our commu-nity, in the life of Christ, in our spirituality, and in our faith! Wecan do that simply by saying ‘yes’ as Mary said yes to God in hercall to serve. We are all called to service! That is our Baptism!

We very much need people, adults as well as youth to serveMass, Lector, Usher, and Greet the faithful! Everyone plays a partin the life of the Church, rich, poor, we must all give of our time, talents, and treasures to keep Christ alive in our community!

Can you help us? Can you give of your time on the weekend, during the week, or even some evening? If we get enough peopleto say YES, we can open new ministries, making our parishexcel! Pray about it! When you hear God asking you what youcould do, say ‘yes’, step forward, let Deacon Fred or Sharon Sut-ter know of your decision. We will work with you to help you growin your faith, your commitment, and your love of God and HisChurch.

ADORATION, LITURGY OFTHE HOURS, AND BENEDIC-TION will be prayed on Tuesdayevening, January 5th at 7:00 p.m. atSt. Joseph, Plymouth. Come join usin worshipping our God in prayer, song and private time before yourGod.

SLAM IS GOING ON A PILGRIMAGE! I am excitedto share with you that SLAM is taking sevenhigh school students to the March for Life inWashington D.C. in January. These youngpeople are very active both here in our parishand at school. They are faith filled and arevery excited about this opportunity. The trip is$210 per person, not including meals, which

isn’t much, but for families of active teenagers, it adds upvery quickly. On behalf of these young people and myself, Iwould like to ask you to consider a donation to help sponsorour trip to support life in our nation’s capital in just a few shortweeks. To make a donation there is more information aboutour pilgrimage in the front and back of church or you canstop at the parish office during the week. If donations goabove and beyond for this trip, the extra will be donated backto the parish. Thank you so much for your time and consid-eration! We appreciate all of your support and prayers.
