June 2012 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, During the sacrifice of the Mass, we are invited to offer one another the sign of peace. This interaction reminds us that peace in the world begins with each one of us. Appropriately, this year’s Peter’s Pence Collection calls the faithful worldwide to Cast the Peace of Christ upon the World. In many locations around the world the Church is challenged daily to be a visible sign of Christ’s peace. In some dioceses many are dependent on the Church for social and pastoral support. Join us in the beautiful Mary Garden (between the church and rectory) on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. this summer. Bring your blanket, your beads and your family or just yourself! Reflections

Living the Gospel Mark 4:26-34 There is no single way to describe the “kingdom of God.” We understand God’s kingdom through the bits and pieces of our own living, but it remains beyond our clear comprehension. That is its richness. In this gospel Jesus uses two similar parables to teach us that the kingdom is realized in the intersection of our own work (plant the seed) with God’s work (the mystery of life growing and bearing fruit). The Good News is that God’s kingdom is assured—the scattered seed will yield a harvest, the tiny seed will grow into a large plant. Perhaps the kingdom must be sown with abandon because this is the only way the mystery can be realized. Our own work is undertaken without full understanding, but with the trust that God is with us nur-turing life out of all we do. It doesn’t matter whether we do tiny things—things tiny like a seed—or earth-shaking things. What matters is that we take up God’s work of planting life and cooperate fully with the divine plan to bring salvation to all.

Our cooperation with God is simply to be faithful followers of Jesus. We are to live the Good News Jesus taught us. This means we say yes to God, yes to God’s commands, yes to God’s direction for our lives. In our yes the kingdom of God takes root in the soil of our hearts and in due time blossoms forth in the great harvest God intends. The kingdom of God is presence, growth, life. These parables are comforting, because whether scattered seed or a tiny seed, an abundant harvest and largeness of life will spring up. Even our tiniest acts of kindness—a simple smile or hello—bring forth life, make the kingdom of God present. Our lifelong journey to live the Gospel makes the kingdom of God present. God uses us followers of Jesus to make divine presence known.

May we faithfully cooperate with God to build up the kingdom.

May we encourage and support one another to live the Gospel more fruitfully.

Meditation Fr. Richard Rohr The mystery of Eucharist clarifies and delineates Christianity from the other religions of the world. We have many things in common, but Christianity is the only religion that says that God became a human body; God became flesh, as John's Gospel puts it (1:14). Our fancy theological word for that is the Incarnation, the enfleshment. It seems that it is much easier for God to convince bread of what it is than for God to convince us. Incarnation is scandalous, shocking—cannibalistic, intimate, sexual! He did not say, “Think about this,” “Fight about this,” “Stare at this;” but He said “Eat this!” A dynamic, interactive event that makes one out of two. If we did not have the Eucharist, we would have to create it; sometimes it seems that outsiders can appreciate it more than Christians. As Gandhi said, “There are so many hungry people in the world that God could only come into the world in the form of food.” It is marvelous, that God would enter our lives not just in the form of sermons or Bibles, but in food. Moving Beyond Bad Habits

We all have our faults, weaknesses, places where we short-circuit morally, dark spots, secret and not-so-secret addictions. When we're honest, we know how universally true are St. Paul's words when he writes: "The good thing I want to do, I never do; the evil thing that I do not want to do - that is what I do." None of us are whole, saints through and through. There's always something we are struggling with: anger, bitterness, vengefulness, selfishness, laziness, or lack of self-control (major or minor) with sex, food, drink, or entertainment. And for most of us, experience has taught us that the bad habits we have are very difficult to break. Indeed, many times we cannot even find the heart to want to break them, so deep have they become engrained in us. We bring the same things to our confessor year after year, just as we break the same New Year's resolutions year after year. And each year we tell our doctor that this year will finally be the year that we lose weight, exercise more, and stick to a healthier diet. Somehow it never works because our habits, as Aristotle said, become our second nature - and nature is not easily changed. So how do we change? How do we move beyond deeply engrained bad habits? John of the Cross, the Spanish mystic, suggests two paths that can be helpful. Both take seriously our human weakness and the unyielding strength of a bad habit inside us. His first advice is this: It is very hard to root out a bad habit by trying to attack it directly. When we do this we often end up unhealthily focused on the habit itself, discouraged by its intransigence, and in danger of worsening its effect in our lives. The better strategy is to "cauterize" our bad habits (his words) by focusing on what is good in our lives and growing our virtues to the point where they "burn out" our bad habits. That's more than a pious metaphor; it's a strategy for health. It works this way: Imagine, for example, that you are struggling with pettiness and anger whenever you feel slighted. Every sincere resolution in the world has not been able to stop you from giving in to that inclination and your confessor or spiritual director, instead of having you focus on breaking that habit, has you focus instead on further developing one of your moral strengths; for example, your generosity. The more you grow in generosity, the more too will your heart grow in size and goodness until you reach a point in your life where there simply won't be room in your life for pettiness and childish sulking. Your generosity will eventually cauterize your pettiness. The same

strategy can be helpful for every one of our faults and addictions. John's second counsel is this: Try to set the instinct that lies behind your bad habit into a higher love. What's meant by that? We begin to set an instinct behind a bad habit into a higher love by asking ourselves the question: Why? Why, ultimately, am I drawn this way? Why, ultimately, am I feeling this vengefulness, this pettiness, this anger, this lust, this laziness, or this need to eat or drink excessively? In what, ultimately, is this propensity rooted? The answer might surprise us. Invariably the deepest root undergirding the propensity for a bad habit is love. The instinct is almost always rooted in love. Just analyze your daydreams. There we are mostly noble, good, generous, big-hearted, whole - and loving, even when in our actual lives we are sometimes petty, bitter, selfish, self-indulgent, and nursing various addictions. We have these bad attitudes and habits not because we aren't motivated by love but because, at this particular place, our love is disordered, wounded, bitter, undisciplined, or self-centered. But it's still love, the best of all energies, the very fire of the image and likeness of God within us. And so we move to uproot a bad habit in our lives by, first of all, recognizing and honoring the energy that lies beneath it and inflames it. Then we need to reset this energy into a higher framework of love, a wider, less selfish, more respectful, more-ordered perspective. And that's a very different thing than denigration or repression of that instinct. When we denigrate or repress an instinct this only increases its power in us and, most often, allows it to wreak even a worse havoc in our lives. Moreover, when we denigrate or repress an instinct that's undergirding a bad habit we are in fact acting against our own health and we will then struggle, perhaps only unconsciously but without exception, to even find the heart to eradicate that bad habit. Energy must be honored, even as we struggle to discipline it and set into a healthier framework. So how do we finally break our bad habits? We do so by honoring the energies that enflame them and by reordering those energies into a higher love. Bake for the Helping Hand Family Picnic!!!!

The mission of Helping Hand Center is to assist persons with disabilities to achieve their highest level of independence through quality programs and services. The vision of Helping Hand Center is that people with disabilities and their families will select Helping Hand for rehabilitative services because of its ability to provide high quality, flexible and appropriate services that achieve desired outcomes. Youth Catechesis is sponsoring a cakewalk at the Helping Hand Family Picnic Saturday June 30, 2012. Over 200 individuals are expected to participate. We need your help! Baked items are needed for the activity. Cakes, cookies, brownies, cupcakes to be used as prizes are in great need. Drop off any donations at the Parish Center Thursday, June 28th or Friday, June 29th on the designated table in the Parish Center Lobby. All donations are greatly appreciated!!!

Items Needed at Kolbe House Kolbe House at Assumption Parish has been one of our SJC Sharing Parishes. Kolbe House Jail Ministry supports the incarcerated, ex-offenders and their families. In addition to our financial support, SJC collects the following items on an ongoing basis: Men’s underwear and t-shirts Currently needed—small, medium, and large men’s boxers. Stationary and stamps (Write-Outs) Travel size toiletries School supplies Men’s shoes Men’s white crew socks CTA bus passes ($23 each) Payless Shoe gift certificates Items can be dropped off in the parish center or the Kolbe House box in the church narthex. Currently, they are in need of Men’s Boxers sizes small, medium, and large. (Please no boxer briefs.) For those who do not have time to shop, a check can be made out to SJC or Kolbe House and the shopping will be done for you.

Food Pantry Report from St. Mark’s Dear SJC Parishioners, During the last month of May 2012 we served 849 individuals and 262 families. This is the second month that we go over 800 individuals this year. The last time we served over 800 individuals was January 2012, which depleted our food inventory. Fortunately, this time we have enough food to provide to our families. This was possible thanks to the support of our Sharing Parishes and our local US Post Office Carriers. The local post office did a food drive and chose St. Mark Food Pantry as the recipient of their food collection. Also, St. John of the Cross Parish continues to donate large quantities of nonperishable food. Additionally, St. Maria Goretti Parish also provided us with canned goods for the pantry. Furthermore, Our Lady of the Wayside has raised money to help us buy meats, dairy products, and other perishable items to feed our families. I am very thankful to all of you who support our St. Mark Food Pantry and I encourage you continue to do so through this bad economy times that has affected our community. OLPH Sharing Parish: Thank you from Sr. Joyce and Sr. Margie Dear People of St. John of the Cross, Thank you for your May “Sharing” check for $700. Your faith-filled and faithful generosity are a great support to us, We deeply appreciate you! These past few months have been very busy for us—as I am sure they have also been for you. Because of hail damage, but the church and parish hall at St. Boniface in Jellico now have new roofs. Insurance paid all but our $1000 deductible. What a blessing! We will celebrate First Communion with one little girl at OLPH on May 27. Then on June 30 a mother and daughter will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Boniface. Very special events for our two little parishes. We look forward to welcoming some Crossroads youth at the end of July. And Sr. Joyce and I hope to visit all of you at St. John’s in September. Dear Friends, Greetings from everyone here in the Off The Street Club Family. We are writing to thank you for the great generosity you have shown, once again, for the children of Off The Street Club. We are so grateful for all of the wonderful donations your parish members made recently to help equip our boys and girls for a camping experience that will provide memories to last a lifetime. Please know that the multitude of items you donated this year, as you have in the past years, are indispensable to our kids, who come to camp with very little, except inextinguishable hope. For all of us, St. John of the Cross Parish remains, not just a source of help, but also a source of inspiration. Thanks to your caring help, hundreds of boys and girls will be able to escape the dangers on Chicago’s west side this summer, for the fun and excitement of childhood joys found at Camp Mathieu. Every child who experiences carefree days and safe nights joins in this sincere expression of appreciation. For 112 years now, Off The Street Club has remained dedicated to our mission to keep inner-city kids safe, help them experience the casual joy of childhood, and grow to be loving, responsible adults. The scriptures for today are full of references to seeds, grains, and other living things. Ezekiel speaks of the cedar planted on mountain heights that becomes a home for birds of every kind. The psalm speaks of the just one who flourishes like the palm tree or the cedar; Jesus speaks of the seed’s mysterious growth and of mustard seeds as images of the kingdom. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land which nourishes us, are gifts of God that we are called to respect...Christian responsibility for the environment begins with appreciation of the goodness of all God’s creation. When we mistreat the natural world, we diminish our own dignity. We also put at risk the dignity of every person, especially the poor and powerless. The Church does not focus on ecological issues without reference to the needs of the human community as there is a profound link between how we treat people and how we treat the earth. A concern for ecology is not placed over and against a concern for human welfare. The two go together. A society that finds the earth disposable too often finds people disposable as well. This is why the Church is concerned about how the poor are affected by the environment. In a sense, Care for God’s Creation circles us back to the first theme of Catholic social teaching, the life and dignity of the human person. One reinforces the other. The theme of care for God’s creation affirms the delight Americans take in our beautiful mountains, plains, lakes, and shores, but it also challenges our consumerism and materialism. We must ask, How can we meet the challenge of establishing a sustainable economy that provides for human needs and protects fragile ecosystems for future generations? The Catholic tradition insists that we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. It is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation.
