LECTOR: A Reading from the word of God written in the book of JOB Chapter THIRTY-EIGHT, Verses One to Seven and Verses Thorty-Four to Forty-One (Job 38: 1-7, 34-41)

The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words

without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? [“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a flood of waters may cover you? Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’? Who has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind? Who has the wisdom to number the clouds? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cling together? “Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert? Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food?”] Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God

Psalm 104:1-9, 25, 37b Benedic, anima mea

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul; * O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness! you are clothed with majesty and splendor. 2 You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak * and spread out the heavens like a curtain. 3 You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; *you make the clouds your chariot; you ride on the wings of the wind. 4 You make the winds your messengers * and flames of fire your servants. 5 You have set the earth upon its foundations, * so that it never shall move at any time. 6 You covered it with the Deep as with a mantle; * the waters stood higher than the mountains. 7 At your rebuke they fled; * at the voice of your thunder they hastened away. 8 They went up into the hills and down to the valleys beneath, *to the places you had appointed for them. 9 You set the limits that they should not pass; * they shall not again cover the earth. 25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! *in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 37b Hallelujah! Glory to the father, and to the son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, its now and ever shall be, world without end. AMEN

A Reading from the word of God, written in the Letter to the HEBREWS, Chapter FIVE verses One to Ten (Hebrews 5:1-10)

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on

their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Reader: The Word of the Lord All: Thanks be to God

Gradual Hymn: Ye Holy angels Bright (1982- 625) 1 Ye holy angels bright, 2 Ye blessed souls at rest, who wait at God's right hand, who ran this earthly race or through the realms of light and now, from sin released, fly at your Lord's command, behold your Savior's face, assist our song, for else the theme his praises sound, as in his sight too high doth seem for mortal tongue. with sweet delight ye do abound. 3 Ye saints, who toil below, 4 My soul, bear thou thy part, adore your heavenly King, triumph in God above: and onward as ye go and with a well-tuned heart some joyful anthem sing; sing thou the songs of love! take what he gives Let all thy days and praise him still, till life shall end, through good or ill, whate'er he send, who ever lives! be filled with praise.

PRIEST: A continuation of the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark, The TENTH Chapter Beginning at the thirty-fifth verse (Mark 10:35-45) All: Glory to Christ, Our Savior

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want

you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Priest: This is the Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ, our Lord

The Sermon: The Reverend Canon Ryan A. Boyce

Hymn for the Baptismal Processsion: When Mothers of Salem (Verse 1 & 2) 1 When mothers of Salem 2 "For I will receive them Their children brought to Jesus, And fold them in My bosom: The stern disciples drove them back I'll be a shepherd to these lambs, And bade them depart; O drive them not away; But Jesus saw them ere they fled, For, if their hearts to Me they give, And sweetly smiled, and kindly said, They shall with Me in glory live: "Suffer little children Suffer little children To come unto Me. To come unto Me."

9

The Priest then addresses the Congregation: Priest: Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? Congregation: We will. The Celebrant then says these words Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Celebrant Do you believe in God the Father? People: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Priest Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Priest: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Priest: Will you continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers? People: I will, with God's help.

Page 11: St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church

10

Celebrant: Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? People: I will, with God's help.

Priest: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? People: I will, with God's help. Priest: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? People: I will, with God's help.

Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. Priest continues: We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

11

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Each candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, Who then pours water upon, the candidate, saying SADIE ANGELA, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Priest places a hand on the person's head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross saying SADIE ANGELA, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ's own forever. Amen. The Priest Then presents each Candidate with a Candle lighting it from the paschal candle saying: God has rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of his beloved son. Receive this Light and walk as a child of Light. People: Let your lights so shine among people that they may see your good work and give glory to your father in heaven. Let us welcome the newly baptized. People: We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

Offertory #1: Love lifted me {L.E.V.A.S - 198} 1 I was sinking deep in sin, 2 All my heart to Him I give, Far from the peaceful shore, Ever to Him I’ll cling, Very deeply stained within, In His blessed presence live, Sinking to rise no more; Ever His praises sing. But the master of the sea Love so mighty and so true Heard my despairing cry, Merits my soul’s best songs; From the waters lifted me Faithful, loving service, too, Now safe am I. To Him belongs. [Refrain] Refrain: Love lifted even me, Love lifted even me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. 3 Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves; He will lift you by His love Out of the angry waves. He’s the master of the sea, Billows His will obey; He your savior wants to be, Be saved today. [Refrain]

DOXOLOGY Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Offertory # 2: Blessed City, Heavenly Salem {CPWI – 520} 1 Blessed city, heavenly Salem, 2 from celestial realms descending, vision dear of peace and love, bridal glory round thee shed, who of living stones art builded meet for him whose love espoused thee, in the height of heaven above, to thy Lord shalt thou be led; and, with angel hosts encircled, all thy streets and all thy bulwarks as a bride dost earthward move; of pure gold are fashionèd.

Page 14: St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church

13

3 Bright thy gates of pearl are shining; 4 Many a blow and biting sculpture they are open evermore; polished well those stones elect, and by virtue of his merits in their places now compacted thither faithful souls do soar, by the heavenly Architect, who, for Christ's dear Name, in this world who therewith hath willed for ever pain and tribulation bore. that his palace should be decked. 5 Laud and honour to the Father, laud and honour to the Son, laud and honour to the Spirit, ever Three, and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run.

The Great Thanksgiving Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every- where to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth… Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Celebrant and People Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Page 15: St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church

14

The people stand or kneel. Then the Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Page 16: St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church

15

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Priest: We break this Bread to Share in the Body of Christ ALL: Though we are many, we are one body because we all share one bread.

The Angus Dei: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Priest: The Gifts of God for the People of God. THE COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Holy Communion. We believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. You may either stand or kneel when receiving communion. Children may receive the Bread and Wine according to the discretion of the parents. Cross your arms over your breast to receive a blessing if you do not wish to receive either Bread or Wine. Because communion is complete in either form, reception of either bread or wine alone constitutes a full communion. If you need to receive Holy Communion in your pew, please notify one of the ushers.

Communion # 1: I have decided to follow Jesus (LEVAS - 136) 1 I have decided to follow Jesus, 2 Though no one join me, still I will follow, I have decided to follow Jesus, Though no one join me, still I will follow, I have decided to follow Jesus, Though no one join me, still I will follow, No turning back, no turning back! No turning back, no turning back! 3 The world behind me, the cross before me, The world behind me, the cross before me, The world behind me, the cross before me, No turning back, no turning back!

Communion # 2: Here I am, send me (LEVAS - 126) 1 Hark! The voice of Jesus calling, 2. Let none hear you idly saying, Who will go and work today? There is nothing I can do; Fields are ripe the harvest waiting, While the souls of some are dying, Who will bear the sheaves away? And the Master calls for you. [Refrain] Refrain:

Loud and long the Master calleth, Rich reward He offers free; Who will answer, gladly saying, “Here am I, send me, send me.” 3. Take the task He gives you gladly, Let His work your pleasure be; Answer quickly when He calleth, “Here am I, send me, send me.” [Refrain]

Page 18: St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church

17

AFTER COMMUNION PRIEST: Let us pray. Celebrant and People

Almighty and everliving God,

we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Recessional Hymn: To God be the Glory {C.P.W.I 387} 1 To God be the glory, great things he hath done: so loved he the world that he gave us his son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the lifegate that all may go in. Refrain:

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice! O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory, great things he hath done. 2 Oh, perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, to ev’ry believer the promise of God. The vilest offender who truly believes, that moment from Jesus a pardon receives. [Refrain] 3 Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son, but purer, and higher, and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. [Refrain]

SEVEN BASIC PREMISES FOR ST. GABRIEL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH 1. St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church exists for those who are not yet members. 2. We welcome and accept people wherever they are in their faith journey. 3. People want relationships, not religion. 4. Positioning: We play to our strengths. 5. Just because we’ve always done things in a certain way is not in and of itself a

sufficient reason for continuing to do it that way. 6. God pays for what God orders. 7. With God, nothing is impossible.
