A big thank you to our Ministry of Care Coordinator, Lois DeFelice, who researched Pope Francis’ encyclical Fratelli Tutti and picked out an appropriate quote for every day in Lent. Annual raffle You should have received your St.

Joseph Raffle tickets in the mail by now. Please let us know if you haven’t received them. This is the only fundraiser for our parish because of the pandemic so we really need your help.

We increased the Grand Prize to $5,000, the second prize to $2,000 and have three 3rd place prizes of $1,000. We are giving away $10,000 for our St. Joseph Raffle. The ticket prices are $20 each or 6 for $100. We lowered the price this year to give you more chances to win. I really encourage every family, if you can, to purchase a book or at least one ticket and sell some to your friends and coworkers. If all 2,600 families of our parish buy at least one ticket, we will raise $52,000!

I would like to thank those of you who have already purchased the tickets. We will be drawing the winning tickets on Easter Sunday, April 4 after the 10:30 AM Mass. You can bring your tickets in with your payment to the Pastoral Center at St. Celestine or the Rectory at St. Cyprian and drop them in the mailbox or bring them to church, or even mail them to us. Thank you for your help with this fundraiser. Good luck!!

Lenten Season On Ash Wednesday we gathered in

church to receive ashes to mark the beginning of the Lenten Season; the 40 days that precede Holy Week and Easter. Lent is the time for us to return to the love of God. This is the time to give in to the Lord and give up something that can help us to be closer to God. We should give up sinful actions and attitudes.

I invite you to spend some time during this Lenten Season to be with God, to recall all the wonderful things God has done for you this year, and to thank God for these gifts. Lent is also an opportunity to reflect on the ways in which you have not been grateful to God.

This is also a good opportunity for you to come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation to seek God’s love and mercy. We hear confessions at St. Celestine church every Saturday from 4 to 4:45 PM. Come reflect on the Passion of the Lord at the Stations of the Cross every Friday during Lent at 7 PM (please check page 7 for the worship site, we alternate each week).

Parish Lenten Mission The Lenten Mission this year for our parish and St. William is on Monday and Tuesday, March 8 and 9 at 7 PM at St. Celestine Church. You are welcome to attend; no sign up is needed. We are grateful to have Fr. Stan Ilo, our resident priest, to be the speaker. The topics for the parish Lenten Mission are “Our Sacred

Walk with Jesus, Our Wounds and Pains, and There is Healing in the Lord: Church as Field Hospital.” See more information on page 7.

I encourage each one of you to set aside those nights to attend or watch live on our parish Facebook page, St. Mother Guerin Parish, in order to deepen your spiritual life during this Lenten Season.

May God bless you always and may the Lenten Season help us to be closer to the Lord!

In prayer,Fr. Paul

HISTORY OF SALVATIONThe first reading today continues the “history of salvation” narrative that we hear throughout Lent this year. Today’s story was among the best–loved in the Jewish tradition (surely Joseph told the story to young Jesus as he formed him in the ways of their faith); the early fathers of the Church were very fond of it as a means of explaining the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.

The overall tone of the first reading, psalm, and second reading seems a little incongruous

Sunday: Second Sunday of Lent, Rite of Sending and Rite of Election for RCIA CatechumensWednesday: St. Katharine DrexelThursday: St. CasimirFriday: First Friday; World Day of Prayer; AbstinenceSaturday: First Saturday

At the conclusion of the Introductory Rites of the Mass, the presider says or chants the words “Let us pray,” followed by the Opening Prayer. This prayer is also called a “collect” because it gathers or “collects” the prayers of the entire assembly into one.

The Roman collects that we pray in our liturgy—noted for the brevity, clarity, and conciseness of the Latin originals—date from a variety of periods. Some are quite new; others reach back more than a thousand years. They are truly

THE OPENING PRAYERtreasures of our tradition. The Opening Prayer can be divided into four main parts: 1) the invitation, or “Let us pray”; 2) the silence that follows, during which each member of the assembly lifts up before God his or her own prayers; 3) the collect itself, spoken or sung by the priest; 4) and finally the Amen, by which the assembly says, “yes,” “may it be so,” making the prayer their own.

The collect itself almost always

with the dazzling Gospel, until we remember that the Transfiguration was placed as the Gospel for this Sunday precisely to remind us of the glory that awaits those who live faithfully and obediently to the will of God. In the life of Jesus, it is a preview of the glory of his resurrection; for us it is a glimpse of the destiny of those who continue, as we heard in last week’s Gospel, to repent and believe in the Good News.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

follows the same pattern. It begins with an invocation to God. A petition follows, usually very general. We ask for health, strength, wisdom, grace, forgiveness, faith, awareness.

Every collect concludes by offering the prayer to God through Jesus Christ. With the Amen of the assembly, the Introductory Rites of the Mass come to an end.

ON THE ROSARY, TRANSFORMANCE, AND LA TRANSFIGURACIÓNI think I mentioned sometime back that I began praying a daily rosary after I retired. I had heard many say that such a practice can be transformational, so I joined in. Now, if it is transformational, I’m not there yet. At the same time, I enjoy the exercise, and plan to keep at it. The early AM is my time. Sans the recent ice and snow, at least. But for when I am out there, my wife made me a red embroidery floss bracelet with ten knots: my rosary.

Sometimes I even pray it in Spanish. I’ve been trying to learn the language for forty years. Solo dos años in la escuela. Not enough. I got interested in learning more when work sent me to Mexico, Puerto Rico, the

Dominican Republic, and Spain. I wanted to speak with my colleagues there in their language. I did, but barely. Now I know more vocab, but when someone actually says something to me in Spanish, forget it… Still, I figured it would be helpful to learn something I knew well in English, in Spanish. Enter the knots.

I favor certain mysteries over others, as dictated by los días de la semana. Tuesdays and Fridays are my least favorite, because los Misterios Dolorosos are traditionally prayed on these days, and it’s hard to contemplate our Lord’s passion and death. I like Wednesdays and Sundays for los Misterios Gloriosos. I like Mondays and Saturdays for los Misterios

Gozosos. But I like Thursdays most for los Misterios Luminosos. Y mi misterio favorito de todos? El Cuarto Misterio Luminoso: La Transfiguración.

The Church gives us the Transfiguration every Second Sunday of Lent. Today we get Mark’s version. Other years we get Matthew’s or Luke’s. But every year, we get Jesus taking Peter, James and John up that mountain, where he is transfigured before them, thus revealing his divine glory…the divine glory that

will trump Jesus’s own death, and the deaths of his followers (as in, Peter, James, John and the rest, and you and me…). As Peter says in all three evangelists’ accounts, Lord, “it is good that we are here.” Qué maravilloso!

Sometimes as I hit the road in the early morning with the knots, I forget which set of mysteries is coming at me until I say that first “Glory Be,” and then launch into the given five for the given day (my memory isn’t what it used to be). And there’s just a bit more step in my step on Thursdays when I recall that the Luminous Mysteries are on tap. I sometimes even break into a smile when I get to the fourth one, recalling Peter’s words, and repeating them in my own context, putting one step in front of the other, alone, often in darkness.

Some people say that praying a daily rosary can be transformational. Maybe. For sure, though, there’s a prayer at the end of the beads beseeching God “…that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise….”

Nobody wants to imitate los Misterios Dolorosos, but Jesus says that to follow him, we must pick up our cross just the same. With the horrible, though, comes the amazing! “…imitate what they contain/obtain what they promise.” Transformational? La Transfiguración. Maybe there’s a connection.

CAN YOU VOLUNTEER?We need volunteers to assist with various aspects of keeping our churches open. If you are high school age or older and are healthy with no underlying health conditions, please consider assisting with funerals, baptisms, weddings, reconciliation, and daily or Sunday Masses.

Funerals are held Monday through Saturday at both churches, usually at 10 AM and 11:30 AM. Weddings are held on Saturday afternoons in both churches. Baptisms take place on Saturdays and Sundays at both churches, usually in the early afternoon.Reconciliation takes place on Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine. There is an 8 AM Tuesday Mass at St. Cyprian and 8 AM Wednesday Mass at St. Celestine.

We are limited to 200 people at St. Celestine and 50 at St. Cyprian to allow for social distancing.

Volunteers are needed to greet, check off attendees, sanitize hands, manage the flow of congregants, direct people to seating, usher, clean, and sanitize the worship space. You must wear a mask at all times and practice social distancing.

All volunteers must understand that even with precautions, we cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to Covid–19. All volunteers must attend a training.

Please submit the website Online Form to indicate your willingness and ability to volunteer, and the days of the week and times of the day that are best for you. This is a massive undertaking and many hands make light work. Find the sign up on the website.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP!
