can cause us to lose sight of or become insensitive to
Jesus’ commandment to love others as we are loved
intensely by Him. Every negative and unkind act we
commit potentially harms those around us. Yet many
times we are not fully awake to the harm we can do to
others. Staying awake spiritually means therefore not
only staying out of trouble, but also focuses on the
fullness of life Jesus has shared with us, and wishes us
to share with others. For instance, a husband and wife
who remain truly awake to each other’s needs and
wants is a happier couple than the couple who simply
lives in the same house together. Much the same can be
said about other relationships we may have. Our
awareness to who the other person is and how we can
love them better goes a long way toward fulfilling
Jesus’ commandment of love. So stay awake! Love
requires it.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 3, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Benildus Romancon, Religious (1805-1862)
Benildus was born Pierre Romancon on June 13, 1805, in the town of Thuret, in France to a farming family. A small and frail looking boy, he was not cut out physically to be a farmer, but his enrollment in a Christian Brothers school led him to his calling as a teacher. He was so far ahead of his classmates in elementary school that when he was only 14 years old the Brothers often assigned him as a substitute teacher. He joined the Christian Brothers in 1820 and served at several Brothers’ schools in south-central France. In 1841 he was appointed Director of a school in Saugues, an isolated village on a barren plateau in southern France For the next twenty years he worked quietly and effectively as teacher and principal to educate the boys in the village and some from the neighboring farms, many of whom were in their teens and had never been to school before. Small as he was, he was known as a strict but fair disciplinarian. He also looked after his students by preparing meals in the Brothers’ kitchen for hungry students, converting old Brothers’ robes into coats or pants for them, and spending hours tutoring students who learned more slowly than others. He referred to all students, regardless of age or background, as “Monsieur.” In time his little school became the center of the social and intellectual life of the village, with evening classes for adults and tutoring for the less gifted students. Brother Benildus’ extraordinary religious sense was evident to everyone: at Mass with the students, teaching catechism, preparing boys for first communion, visiting the sick and praying with the dying. Rumors of miraculous cures often circulated throughout the area through his intervention. Saint Benildus was especially effective in
attracting religious vocation. At his death, on August
13, 1862, more than 200 Christian Brothers and an
impressive number of priests had been students at
Saugues. Saint Benildus’ feast day is the 13th of
August.

honor our Lady, all women are
invited to attend a presentation of this
apparition on Wednesday, December
13 at 7 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. The presenter,
Patricia Kaine, will answer some questions in this
informative talk, including, “Why did 10 million
Aztecs convert to Catholicism in a decade?” And,
“What is the significance of this image?” No RSVP is
required. Light refreshments will be served.
EVANGELIZATION TIP
When setting up the Christmas
decorations, make sure that the
central piece of the display is
Jesus. He is the reason for the
season.
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY As a family, cut up little strips
of paper to use as hay for the
manger in your nativity scene.
Every time you make a sacrifice or do something for
Jesus, add a strip to empty manger. Then on
Christmas, your Baby Jesus will rest upon the bed you
made for him.

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER
“A joyful heart is more easily made perfect than a
downcast one.” — St. Philip Neri

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 3, 2017
HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW… Did you know that the First Sunday of Advent is the
Sunday closest to the feast of St. Andrew (Nov 30)? St.
Andrew was the first disciple called by Our Lord, and it
reminds us that Jesus is still calling us to be disciples
and to follow Him.
WEEKLY MASS REMINDER
The Gloria is not sung during Advent because Advent is
a penitential season. In other words, we are preparing
our hearts for the great feast of Christmas. We fast from
the Gloria, so that when we hear it again on December
25, we will be filled with joy because of the newborn
king.
MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS
Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the
presence of God in the midst of events. Begin your
conversation with God with this question:
Question: What was it like not to sing the Gloria? What
does it mean to you to sing that ancient hymn?
