School of Science and Technology Accomplishments Summary 2018-‐2019
Dean Lynn Stauffer, Ph.D. June 2019
Major Accomplishments 2018-‐19
STUDENT SUCCESS
1. Successful School-‐level Strategic Planning led by the Science & Technology Strategic Planning Taskforce. Moving forward the plan will promote communication, help guide strategy and unify efforts across the School in support of campus priorities.
2. Completed developmental mathematics curriculum including transitional courses designed to bridge the path to full implementation this Fall 2019.
3. The School’s GE Taskforce met throughout the year to understand and respond to EO1100 with notable changes in Area B as well as other significant impacts. S&T faculty served in key leadership roles tied to these EOs including GERS Chair Suzanne Rivoire, EPC Chair Jenn Lillig and Math & Stats Department Chair Brigitte Lahme.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND INNOVATION
1. Faculty secured a number of external grants including: a. 2018-‐19 California Education Learning Lab award to project Developing Student
Identity and Self-‐Perception as Capable STEM Thinkers and Learners at the Community College Level -‐ $1,300,000. Chemistry professors are co-‐leads along with collaborators at UC Berkeley, College of Marin and Diablo Valley College.
b. NSF funding to project Make Math REAL: Realize Equity to Activate Learners – $586,000. SSU Mathematics and UC Berkeley are partners on this grant to develop and test maker-‐based math education curriculum for fourth and fifth grades.
c. Developing a Student Driven STEM and Computer Science Curriculum for Rural Students was awarded a total of $3,930,078 for five years from the Department of Education, Education Innovation and Research program plus $400,000 in matching funds. In partnership with high schools in Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake Counties, this project integrates computer science and work-‐based learning experience for rural and high-‐need students building on Learning by Making 9th grade integrated STEM curriculum.
2. Over 400 undergraduates exhibited their research projects and shared their expertise at the Science Symposium in late April. Program available with abstracts at web.sonoma.edu/scitech/symposium/archives/2019_science_symposium_program.pdf
3. The Beyond Curie interactive installation in the Darwin Lobby featuring women in science was funded thru SST Innovation and Strategic Priorities funding. Opening ceremonies kicked off S&T’s Celebration of Women In Science during Women’s History Month.
4. Hired four new tenure track faculty aligned with strategic priorities and values and adding to the excellence and diversity of the SST faculty.

LEADERSHIP CULTIVATION
1. Brigitte Lahme, Math & Stats Department Chair, was honored by Cengage Learning and the National Resource Center for the First-‐Year Experience and Students in Transition for her student advocacy work, specifically in student learning, development, and success.
2. Dr. Claudia Luke, Director of the SSU Center for Environmental Inquiry, was awarded the Environmental Stewardship Award from the North Bay Leadership Council.
TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT
1. The North Bay Alert System including a communications, camera, and sensor network tower installed on SSU’s Fairfield Osborn Preserve coupled with cyber-‐connectivity through a new tower installed on Darwin Hall was completed. SSU provides the highspeed connectivity that enables the network of remote towers throughout the North Bay to detect early warnings of fire and other dangerous conditions. The data collected will also be used for research.
2. Early pipeline outreach initiatives continued and expanded (North Bay Discovery Day, RFDC, Sonia Kovalesky Day, Entomology Outreach, Girls Tinker Academy, EYH, Piner High STEM Program, Chemistry Week, and S&T Summer High School Internship Program).

The event offered over $1,500 of prizes to teams competing in three vertical themes (Awareness, Energy, Transportation), for six prizes funded or donated by sponsors. The CS Club raised over $6,200 in order to provide the entire event for free to participants. The event was planned by 10 student organizers and run by a total of 16 on-‐site student volunteers. The event played host to approximately 84 students from SSU and SRJC, working on projects together in 12+ teams of up to 4 students each. d. Gondree, M. General Chair of the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (IEEE S&P 2019, San Francisco, CA). This is the oldest, tier-‐one conference in this sub-‐discipline. It a highly competitive venue: for the past 15 years, the conference has an acceptance rate of around 10-‐-‐14%. In 2019, 679 eligible papers were submitted, and 84 papers accepted (12% acceptance rate). Compared to 2018 (63 papers), this is a 30% increase to the technical program size and required us to have parallel tracks (the first year we have ever done this for S&P). Led 20-‐person organizing committee responsible for all logistics associated with supporting the technical program including hotel, contracts, donations, registration, finances, publishing, audio-‐visual support, receptions and meals, poster session, workshop program, etc. Received over $200k in donations, awarded over $70k of student travel awards, had 650 attendees and tracked approximately $1.5 million of inlays and outlays -‐-‐ each of these broke records for the history of our event. Also celebrated the 40th IEEE S&P, an anniversary year. Awarded the first "Test of Time" awards, celebrating research results appearing at our conference that have withstood the test of time. This had the added benefit of bringing back several luminaries in the field-‐-‐-‐Dick Kemmerer, Gustavus J. Simmons, Butler W. Lampson, Dorothy E.
