"This disaster is worse than the tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake

and the Haiti earthquake,” said a UN spokesman.

This week, fuelled by more monsoon rains, flood waters have surged

south through the country on their way to the Arabian Sea, leaving a trail

of devastation.

So far, at least 1,600 people have been killed.

A massive 14 million people have been affected – equal to

the combined populations of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland

and the Republic of Ireland.

This 14 million is made

up of individuals such as

Umer Hazrat (right).

His wife and five children

were fast asleep when

the floods came. They

only just escaped with

their lives.

‘I lost my house, my two

goats and two cows, and

my crops. But I am

thankful to God that my

family is alive,’ says

Umer Hazrat.

Tearfund has been

working with Pakistani

communities since 1975.

With our local partners,

we are responding to

this disaster.

Our partner SSEWA-Pak

is urgently increasing

Please pray…

• Please continue to pray for the people affected by this disaster, that

they will know God’s comfort and hope. • Pray for survivors’ health, as water-borne diseases thrive in

flood conditions. • Ask God to be with the Pakistani authorities, that they will do all they

can to help affected communities. • With so many roads and communication links still down, many

communities are cut off or stranded. Please pray that Tearfund partner

staff and other aid workers will continue to find ways through. • Please pray for Ashraf, Tearfund’s Pakistan Country Representative,

and his colleague Obed, who are working incredibly hard to support our

local partners. • A number of Tearfund partners are just about to start new programmes to

help survivors – please pray for them. Pray also for

SSEWA-Pak staff as their work continues.

A prayer for Pakistan

Lord God,

We ask that those suffering because of the Pakistan floods will find hope

and comfort in you. And that those responding to this disaster will be

sustained by your love.

As part of your worldwide church, we ask these things in Jesus’ name,

Amen
