Tell me about the chair you are sitting in.

Design thinking in the classroom is not about design elements or the end product. Design thinking is about the process.
What is the design process?
• Investigate the challenge or opportunity
• Frame/Reframe the problem
• Generate possible solutions
• Edit + Develop ideas
• Share + Evaluate your process and ideas
• Finalize the solution
• Articulate the solution and process
Break[5 min.]
• Break into teams of 4
• Each team gets one paper bag
• As a team solve the design challenge
• You can only use the supplies in your bag
• You may use scissors, but NO tape or glue
• Do not design what already exists
Design Challenge
Generate/Brainstorming. The best way to get a good idea is to get a lot of ideas.
• encourage wild ideas
• defer judgment
• go for quantity
• write everything down
• leverage
Selection. How to harvest your ideas.
• Post-it voting
• Three Categories
The wild idea
The darling
The rational
Develop/Prototyping. A picture is worth a thousand words.
• build to think
• fail early to succeed sooner
• don’t fall in love with your idea
• if a prototype fails are there elements you
could
still use?
Articulate your solution.
• Read your challenge question.
• How does your solution address the
challenge.
• Stand-up
