The mission of Opportunities, Inc. is to provide developmental and support services which assist

individuals in attaining a full life in the community.

Early Intervention Chesney was born on November 27, 2010, and her parents, Kandy and David Meredith were excited to welcome their new daughter. At first, everything seemed normal, but the Meredith’s world soon turned upside down. Immediately following her birth, Chesney was diagnosed with Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS). ABS occurs when fibrous amniotic bands surround the developing fetus and restrict blood flow.

“We had never heard of ABS before, so hearing her diagnosis was a complete shock. However, once we held her for the first time, we saw that she was beautiful and perfect,” says Kandy.

In addition to ABS, Chesney was born with a club foot, webbed fingers, and dysphagia, a swallowing problem that requires all of her food and liquids to be thickened. Faced with the need for intensive therapies and numerous surgeries, Chesney’s parents turned to Opportunities.

“I knew that Chesney needed help, and I found Opportunities. We love it here, and the staff has made a big difference in her physical and social development.”

Chesney is enrolled in Opportunities’ Early Intervention Program, and she travels to the main campus once a week to work with her service coordinator and therapists. She receives physical therapy twice a month in her home.

Opportunities’ staff works with Chesney on fine motor skills and strength-building exercises for her fingers. Targeted therapies and weekly services build the foundation for Chesney’s success in public school and in later life. She will be able to run and play with other children and to write her name.

“My dream for Chesney was that she would be able to walk one day. Opportunities made this possible.”

Even though Chesney will face more surgeries on her hands and feet, her parents can rely on Opportunities to provide quality care and support for Chesney as she grows.

Now a shy but inquisitive two year-old, Chesney loves to laugh and share hugs. Her mother says, “Chesney is a normal & healthy child, she just has special hands & feet.”

She has stolen the hearts of many!

As more families decide to keep their parents and grandparents out of nursing homes for as long as possible, they are turning to adult day programs such as the one offered by Opportunities, Inc.

Martha lived independently, and enjoyed family activities, but after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, she needed assistance with daily tasks and medication. Now, Martha is no longer alone at home. She attends Opportunities’ Senior Day Center, and her

family is relieved to know that she is being cared for while they work.

The Senior Day Center provides families with peace of mind. They feel secure in knowing that their loved one is receiving special care in a spacious facility, designed specifically for adult day care. Seniors receive quality day services which include: nutritious meals, snacks, exercise, socialization activities, and medication assistance from a nurse. Additionally, handicap-accessible transportation is available to and from the Center.

Art Therapy is an important activity for the clients in the Senior Day Center, and a dedicated volunteer, Deby Turrentine, makes this possible. After volunteering with her church, Deby became interested in spending more time in the Center. Eight years later, she still visits every Friday during her lunch break to share her love of art with the clients. Many clients discover hidden talents.

One family member commented, “I did not know that my father could paint, until he came to Opportunities. Now we have wonderful pieces of artwork around the house, and we are grateful for the Senior Day Center.”

Opportunities holds an annual Art Show at which clients display their work for friends, family, and the community. Several clients have entered paintings in the Four States Fair and won ribbons for their work.

Thanks to the commitment of friends like Deby, Opportunities is improving the quality of life for elderly in our community.

The Opportunities Foundation Board, established in 1986, supports programs offered by Opportunities, Inc. through fundraising projects and increased public awareness. This highly visible, dedicated group of women has made a world of difference in the lives of the children and adults who have developmental delays and disabilities. Over the years they have purchased therapy equipment, computers, commercial sewing machines, playground equipment, furniture for Opportunities’ residential facilities, and art for the Wellness Trails. Thank you, Foundation Board, for caring and sharing with us!
