NJC had beaten Casper in straight sets on Aug. 28 in the WNCC Classic. “We have been struggling with blocks and digs,” said NJC Coach Jessica Squier, “and we continued to struggle in the first match against Casper. Casper came out ready to play and we did not match their intensity. “The second set against Central Wyoming we switched to a 6-2 offense, and switched up our defense. Without practicing it I think those adjustments made a world of difference of how we played. I was very proud of the girls for consciously making those adjustments without the coaching staff to remind them.” NJC opened the season Aug. 21 against Williston State and Squier saw an improved team in the Wyo- Braska Tournament. “Williston got better since the last time we saw them,” she observed. “We continued the 6-2 and new defense and base and things went smoother.” NJC also saw Northwest for the second time this year, losing to the nationally-ranked team at home on Sept. 10. “In our last match against Northwest I was extremely proud of our team,” Squier said. “The stats don’t show it but we were extremely aggressive and the rallies lasted quite a long time. “It was a fun match to be able to coach. I hope that we as a team really start recognizing how good we are and we can continue to move forward in a positive direction into region matches.” NJC is 12-10 overall and will host EWC tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. and Colorado Christian university JV Thursday at 7 p.m. After taking a week off the Plainswomen will stay home to host Lamar Community College Thurs., Oct. 1 at 7 p.m., Trinidad State College Fri., Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. and Otero Junior College Sat., Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. in South Sub-Region matches. 4 deep at running back with guys who can play.” Edinger reported that backing up Burkholder is junior Peyton Kloberdanz, who has 47 yards on 22 carries. “Peyton has the same ability as Austin because he can also run people over and is pretty shifty,” he added. Junior Tyler Graber has 7 carries for 24 yards. “Tyler has good speed, and if he can get to the outside he is going to go,” Edinger said. Sophomore Gage Peterson is an up and coming running back on the varsity level, according to Edinger. “I believe Gage will develop into a great running back,” he predicted. “He hits the gaps hard and if we needed him I would not hesitate to put him in there.” Edinger added that, “the running game is pretty much our bread and butter. A lot of our passing is set up on our runs, so we have to establish a good running game for our passing to be effective. “The first week of the season we rushed for 275 yards, and it would be nice if we could do that every week. I think once we get everyone healthy we will have that potential each week.” Continued From Page 24 Offensive backs NJC goes 2-2 in Wyo-Braska Tourney Michael Auction Service Julesburg, CO Lloyd Michael, Jr.: 970-520-0023 TERMS OF SALE: 3% Buyer’s Premium.
