No one was quite sure where they came from. Until now. Researchers at Florida Atlantic University say they have traced the colony’s origins to the Dania Chimpanzee Farm. It was reported recently that there was a monkey escape from the farm in 1948, with most of the monkeys recaptured. But not all of them. The rest disappeared into a mangrove swamp, where their descendants live today. The FAU team said the colony currently numbers about 41. The FAU researchers traced the monkeys’ genetics and concluded they were brought to Florida from Africa. The monkeys were sold mainly for medical and military research. One thing is certain: Residents of the Dania Beach area where the monkeys live are extremely protective of them. “The community still loves them,” said Deborah “Missy” Williams, lead author of the study, who is in the FAU Biological Sciences Department. “They care for them. They want them protected.” Williams has founded the Dania Beach Vervet Project to protect them and is trying to raise money to buy land to serve as a sanctuary. Every Step Counts For fitness enthusiasts who constantly count their steps, a new study has good news for those who always find time to squeeze in a few more each day. It turns out taking more steps per day can help you live longer. Moreover, researchers say it doesn’t matter if you take them all at once or in short spurts, just getting those steps in can lower the risk of premature death. The study, involving more than 16,000 women over the age of 60, also suggests that 4,500 steps per day is enough to help extend the human lifespan. In comparison to taking no steps at all, researchers find each additional 1,000 steps contributes to a 28 percent decrease in death among study participants. Study authors asked participants to wear a step-counting device to measure activity over four to seven days. The devices kept track of everything from long walks outside to short spurts while climbing stairs. Women who took more than 2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts displayed a 32 percent decrease in risk of death. A prior analysis of the same women also discovered that those who took 4,500 steps per day had a significantly lower risk of death in comparison to the least active women. “Technological advances made in recent decades have allowed researchers to measure short spurts of activity. Whereas, in the past we were limited to only measuring activities people could recall on a questionnaire,” says study leader Christopher Moore, a PhD student in epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, in a media release. “Older adults face many barriers to participating in structured exercise programs, so some may find it more convenient and enjoyable to increase everyday walking behaviors, like parking slightly further from their destination or doing some extra housework or yardwork,” Moore adds. According to the Mayo Clinic, the average American takes between 3,000 and 4,000 steps each day. That’s the equivalent of roughly two miles of walking. While that may sound like a lot, some experts place the goal for peak fitness at around 10,000 steps daily. Bantamweight Fight Set The UFC is targeting a new date of July 24 for a bantamweight fight between former champion TJ Dillashaw and Cory Sandhagen, multiple sources told ESPN, confirming an MMA Junkie report. Contracts have not been signed, but the UFC is working on finalizing the 135-pound contest. Once official, it will headline a UFC Fight Night at a location to be announced. The fight was originally scheduled to take place on May 8, but Dillashaw, 35, suffered a cut near his eyebrow during training and was forced to postpone. Dillashaw (16-4) has not fought since he was knocked out in the first round of a flyweight championship fight against Henry Cejudo in January 2019. The California native was then suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for two years after testing positive for EPO (erythropoietin). He was forced to relinquish his 135-pound title at the time of his suspension. Sandhagen (14-2) is one of the most promising contenders at 135 pounds. He is 7-1 in the UFC overall. Flick On The Move Hansi Flick’s next job appears to be lined up and it’s exactly the one that everybody was expecting. The outgoing Bayern Munich manager confirmed rececntly that he’s finalizing a deal with the German Football Association to succeed Jogi Low as Germany manager after the Euro.”Everyone knows how I feel about the national team,” Flick, who is leaving Bayern after two seasons, said. “Things still need to be sorted out. It’s about little things. If they are settled, we can announce it quickly.” A native of Heidelberg, the 56- year-old Flick served as an assistant under Low for eight years from 2006 to 2014, winning the World Cup in 2014. He joined Bayern, a club he spent five seasons at as a player, in the summer of 2019 as an assistant to Niko Kovac and was made manager upon Kovac’s dismissal that fall. In his first season in charge, Flick led Bayern to a treble, claiming the Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal and the 2020 Champions League crown. Flick led Bayern to another Bundesliga crown this season. Flick announced his impending departure from the club in April following a reported falling out with sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. Flick’s services were rumoured to be of interest at both Juventus and Barcelona, two clubs that could be in the market for new managers in the coming weeks. Bayern’s season comes to an end on Saturday with a home date against Augsburg. Flick says Javi Martinez, Jerome Boateng and David Alaba, three players set to depart the club at season’s end up on the expiry of their contracts, are in line for farewell appearances. RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann was named Flick’s successor earlier this month.
