The Braga Municipal Stadium is nestled into an abandoned quarry on thenorth slope of Monte Castro. It makes the most of the dramatic rock facessurrounding it with an unusual configuration of facing banks of seating andopen ends. Initially the roof was intended to look like a long, continuous, can-tilevered visor modeled on Siza’s Portuguese pavilion at the Lisbon expo. Butit came to resemble the cleverly engineered Inca rope suspension bridgesthat are cast over deep gorges of the Andes. Unique “flying scuppers” extendout dramatically from the quarry walls to catch the runoff from thesecanopies. Despite the use of a heavy concrete construction system, the open-ness of the stadium and its structure lends it a sense of lightness, and inte-grates it with its landscape. Located in the Dume Sports Park, the stadium isintended to serve as an anchor for future development as the city expandsnorthward. The location was chosen in order to avoid making a dam along thewater’s edge in the valley.

El estadio municipal de Braga está enclavado en una cantera abandonada enla cara norte de Monte Castro. El recinto saca el mejor partido de las impre-sionantes paredes de roca que lo rodean, mediante una configuración pococomún de las gradas y de los extremos abiertos. La idea original era que lacubierta pareciese una visera larga, continua y voladiza, inspirada en el pabe-llón de Portugal que Siza proyectó para la exposición de Lisboa. Pero final-mente acabó asemejándose a los puentes colgantes de cuerda que los inge-nieros incas desplegaron con tanto ingenio sobre los profundos desfiladerosde Los Andes. Unos insólitos «imbornales flotantes» sobresalen de formaespectacular desde los muros de la cantera para recoger los residuos líquidosprocedentes de dichas cubiertas. A pesar de utilizar un sistema constructivoba?sado en el hormigón pesado, el carácter abierto del estadio y su propiaestructura le confieren una sensación de ligereza y contribuyen a integrarloen el entorno. Situado en el complejo deportivo de Dume, el objetivo es que el estadio actúe como sostén en el futuro, cuando la ciudad se extiendahacia el norte. La elección del emplazamiento responde al deseo de evitar laconstrucción de una presa en la orilla y en pleno valle.

CONTEMPORARY ART CENTERIN BRAGANÇA

The Centro de Arte Contemporânea de Bragança is a project that involves thereuse of an existing 18th century building and an addition housing servicespaces, loading, and a large temporary exhibit hall. The site runs through theblock with the existing building fronting on Rua Abílo Beça and the new build-ing at the opposite end of the site with its front on Rua Emídio Navarro. Thetwo buildings are connected by a one-story neck containing mainly circulationspace and some service functions. Various exterior patios, both for serviceand the public are also in this center zone of the site. The new entry from theRua Emídio front of the project is particularly dramatic. The main mass of the building -a simple box- hovers just above the sloping sidewalk. You duckunder the skirt of the box where the sidewalk is low enough to permit, only tofind you are in a very tall space open to the top of the box’s volume. Walkingup to the high end of the space brings you to the front doors and inside whereanother stepped ramp switches back up to the temporary exhibit hall.

La reutilización de un edificio del siglo XVIII y la ampliación que alberga espa-cios para servicios, así como la gran sala de exposiciones temporales, confor-man el Centro de Arte Contemporânea de Bragança. El emplazamiento partedel edificio existente situado en la calle Abílo Beça hasta el nuevo edificio ubi-cado en el extremo contrario, cuya fachada se encuentra en la calle EmídioNavarro. Estos dos edificios están conectados por una planta común que contiene principalmente el espacio de circulación y algunos servicios. En estazona central también existen varios patios exteriores de uso público. Lanueva entrada que se genera en la fachada de la calle Emídio Navarro esespecialmente original. El volumen principal del edificio, consistente en unacaja simple, queda suspendido en relación con la pendiente de la calle. Elacceso principal al centro se realiza a través del desnivel de la calle que seinserta en la parte inferior de la caja. Una vez dentro del museo se percibe unespacio abierto y de gran altura. En el nivel superior de esta caja existen laspuertas frontales que también dan acceso al interior, donde se ubica unarampa escalonada que dirige hacia el vestíbulo de las exposiciones temporales.

OFFICE BUILDING ON AVENIDA DA BOAVISTA

This project is on the same site to the Casas Quinta de Avenida, which are theresidential portion of the project. The ground floor of this office buildingforms a platform upon which are scattered various trapezoidal “monitors.”These monitors, as elements of a roofscape which will eventually includetrees, fan out irregularly from one of two vertical circulation cores. Eachtrapezoid has its wide side backed up towards the center, while their narrowsides are glassed-in and aimed generally to take in the north light. Two of themonitors, for variety, face south. And all except two are one-story. Gray orwhite stucco and window walls with very thin frames comprise the exteriorexpression of the building, where the refinement of the details is of the mostcritical importance. The building sits back away from the main street atop aslope which conceals two levels of underground parking. The main entries arefrom the south side of the building on a small side street.

Este edificio está situado en el mismo lugar que las Casas Quinta de Avenida,que constituyen la parte residencial del proyecto. La planta de este bloque deoficinas forma una plataforma sobre la cual se disponen, de manera aleatoria,varios «monitores» trapezoidales. Éstos forman parte del paisaje de la cubier-ta, que en un futuro próximo incluirá una serie de árboles, y se ramifican demanera irregular a partir de los dos núcleos centrales de circulación vertical.Todos los trapecios constan de un lado más ancho que se orienta hacia elcentro de la cubierta. Sin embargo, los lados más estrechos están acristala-dos para aprovechar mejor la luz procedente del norte. Para crear una dispo-sición más variada, dos de los volúmenes trapezoidales se desvían hacia elsur, y todos –excepto dos– tienen una sola planta. El exterior del edificio secompone de paredes grises o blancas de estuco, así como ventanas con mar-cos muy delgados, que permiten observar los detalles refinados de granimportancia. La construcción se ubica a cierta distancia de la calle principal ysobre una pendiente que alberga un aparcamiento subterráneo de dos pisos.El acceso al conjunto se realiza por el lado sur del edificio, donde se encuentrauna pequeña calle secundaria.
