AND WHAT A GREAT DIM SUM LUNCHEON IT WAS !!! The Southern California members sat down to a very "unusual" Dim Sum Luncheon. I say this because the Marques sisters more than outdid themselves. Aurea Pereira, Alda Gosan and Rita Guterres used creativity to organize a luncheon that consisted of Dim Sum which in itself would have been plenty, but the Lunch that followed had plates of Duck, Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce, Kung Pao Beef, Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, Chow Mein HK Style to name but a few. Have you ever seen "class" in a Dim Sum Lunch? Well, this had "class" as we were all supplied with a specially printed Menu of what we were going to be served. Needless to say, we not only had our fill for some very healthy appetites but we had "bunches" to take home. Is this not reminiscent of Filomac affairs?

What a tremendous and successful event these sisters provided! As far as the writer is concerned you have my vote, and all future events here in Southern California can be organized by Aurea, Alda and Rita. I believe Thelma Rodrigues who is now back in Southern California also had a hand in this. Kudos to the Marques!!! And welcome back Thelma and Tommy!

The Southern California members met on August 18th, 2012 at the Great Seafood Harbor Restaurant - a terrific restaurant with very good food. We had quite a turn out; we usually do if the event is a Dim Sum Luncheon. I believe Aurea told me we had a total of 40 who showed up and that is a lot for us down here in the South. It was really great seeing old friends again, sharing old memories of the old days, renewing updates of our lives today; something we don't get to do very often which is a shame because we are so spread out here in the South.

Thank you once again Aurea, Alda, Rita and Thelma for the time you spent to ensure that we had a great time getting together, and planning such a sumptuous meal. You are the BEST!!!

During his 60 year career in the Music Industry in Hong Kong, Reinaldo Maria Cordeiro, aka “Uncle Ray” has interviewed a host of legendary musical luminaries, including the Beatles, Beach Boys, Billy Eckstine, Buddy Rich, Carlos Santana, Ella Fitzgerald, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, etc. The list goes on and on – too much to include in this article. He also introduced many young musical talents to the Hong Kong Music scene.

On June 28, 2012 at the ripe old age of 87 he has been bestowed another great honor - The Honorable Fellowship award from the HK Academy for Performing Arts”, and I had the honor of corresponding and collaborating with Ray for this special article.

Ray was born in a modest home on Wan Chai Road on December 12, 1924, the fifth child of Luiz and Livia Cordeiro, who were of Portuguese descent from Macau. "My mother was born in the barracks in Macau and her father was a senior military officer there," says Ray.

During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, his family, like most Macanese in Hong Kong and Shanghai took refuge in the Portuguese colony of Macau. As a teenage Ray was attracted to the drums, and found plenty of opportunities to practice on the cooking pots and pans in the kitchen at the refugee centre in Macau, where his mother was the head cook.

After the war, Ray worked for 4 years at the legendary Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation and moonlighted as a drummer with his own jazz trio at the Chantecler Restaurant, near Hillwood Road, in Tsim Sha Tsui.

A chance meeting with Frank Harris, head of Rediffusion at that time, changed everything for the 25-year-old. It was at Rediffusion, a cable service with four channels that Ray’s career in broadcasting was launched.

He started as a scriptwriter. Through hard work and a little luck, he made a name for himself in just a few years. "I knew absolutely nothing about script writing. But I was a fast learner. Soon, I was given airtime to run my first program - Progressive Jazz. One day my Canadian producer brought in a guest from Switzerland. When I found out he loved jazz, I invited him to my show. During the interview, I realized he knew everything about jazz and had interviewed all the big names in the United States, such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, etc. So, after the show I took him to Blue Heaven, in Central, for a show by Bing Rodriguez and his quartet. He enjoyed it very much and told my boss afterwards that he should give me, 'the aggressive young man', a break. This gentleman turned out to be the head of Swiss Broadcasting, and his words carried weight with the company and they let me host The Diamond Music Show (weekly) sponsored by Ren da Silva, and The Shriro Hit Parade, the top 10 hits of the week.”

“After I became famous as a DJ, I was allowed to take charge of two popular live shows, Talent Time and Rumpus Time.”

Both shows featured live performances in front of live audiences. Ray used these two shows to find and launch new musical talent. That was more than half a century before America's Got Talent. A few who performed for Ray became famous. Terry Parsons showcased his fabulous voice and won so often that Ray offered him his own one-off show, on the condition that he would not take part in Forces Talent Show again. He accepted the offer and, on June 27, 1953, performed his first concert on air. Two songs from that show are featured in the Matt

Monro Special Reserve Collection, recently released in Britain.

"Terry Parsons was Matt's real name, and he was in Hong Kong for a two year stint in the military. He loved Hong Kong and remembered his good days there and came to my show whenever he was in town."

Rumpus Time produced The Fabulous Echoes, a pop group made up of young Filipino men that became a sensation in Hawaii for 25 years under the name Society of Seven, aka SOS. They were the first and, arguably, then most successful pop group from Hong Kong. "Rumpus Time" and "Talent Time" with audiences were both Rediffusion presentations but later transferred to Rediffusion Television when TV was introduced in Hong Kong.

In 1960 Ray joined Radio Hong Kong, following the expiration of Rediffusion's 10-year broadcasting franchise. It was there that some iconic musical figures made their debut, such as Joe Junior, Teddy Robin, the Playboys, Roman and The Four Steps.

“Teddy Robin came in one day with an open-wheel recording of the hit Six Days in May. It was home-made and the quality was poor. Ray suggested Robin do a proper recording at the RHK studio, which he took to Ren da Silva owner of Diamond Records. Teddy Robin was given a recording contract and Ray went on to produce the song”.

"[Joe Junior's] father, Rodrigues SR, was my friend at St Joseph's. One day he said to me, 'My crazy son wants to be a pop singer, and you as a DJ, can you help?' So I recommended him to Diamond Records, which ended up signing him and producing his first hit, Here's a Heart, a song that was No. 1 for seven weeks. I must say Joe's popularity was because he was naturally friendly with teenagers. After every show, no matter how late it was, he would stay until the last [fan] left. That's why he has a lot of loyal fans over the years."

All the Way with Ray has been Ray’s longest-running radio program to date. Its launch owed much to the 1970 Osaka Expo.

"I was selected as the road manager of a local pop group to perform at the Hong Kong pavilion, which was next to the British site. I picked Joe Junior, Irene Ryder, Michael Remedios and other top musicians from Hong Kong. We got Tsang Fook Piano to provide us with Fender and other top-of-the-line equipment and free shipment to Japan, too. It so happened that we were the only pop group there, others brought in folk groups performing soft

music. So our band music attracted a lot of attention. Every Saturday night, when a pavilion threw a party, we were the band there. But it also drew the jealousy of the host, who complained that we played too loud."

"I had many love affairs in my life, but nothing resulted in marriage. So all I can say now is I'm married to my music. My life has been so happy, meeting all these important people in the music industry, that I wouldn't trade it for anybody else's."

In 2010, Ray had a heart attack during lunch at the Kowloon Cricket Club. After surgery, he was advised to cut down his work schedule from four hours a day to three, ending the program at one instead of two in the morning. After two years of recuperation, Uncle Ray is ready for a comeback.

Next month at the ripe old age of 87 he will begin hosting a Sunday night hour of jazz, the genre that launched his career six decades ago. in addition to All the Way with Ray on weekdays,

"I will never retire. I love to share my music with the audience so much that I look forward to my show every night. It will just go on forever and ever, as long as I live."

Ray proudly proclaims “I'm the only Macanese in the world holding a Guinness World Record “The World’s Most Durable Radio DJ”; BBS “The Bauhinia Bronze Medal” of the HKSAR, “Lifetime Achievement Award” presented by Paul Anka; and MBE from Queen Elizabeth in 1987.

Ray writes, “I am proud to be a Macanese of Portuguese ancestry”. We at UMA salute you Ray and say we are proud of you, one of the shining Stars of our community.

In the last century the Macaense Community in Hong Kong, Macau and Shanghai produced a large number of outstanding, talented and gifted sportsmen. Some of these athletes achieved world-class standards; however, they did not get the opportunity to participate in the Olympic Games. This being the Olympic Year, it would seem appropriate that we look back into the past and acknowledge with pride the achievements of the group of Filo Macau athletes that did participate in the Games. Due to hard work and perseverance, they had reached the pinnacle of their sport. We, hereby congratulate them. According to the reports from the archives of Hong Kong Sports, Mr. A. de O. Sales, Honorary Life Time President of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee and other die-hard supporters built Hong Kong’s Olympic athletes from the ground up. During his three-decade tenure, he negotiated for recognition, funding and autonomy, including one hair-raising episode for the release of the athletes from terrorist custody. In the 1972 Munich Games, the Hong Kong Olympians were in the same housing block as the Israeli contingent when the Black September Palestinian Terrorist Organization staged its bloody takeover of the compound. According to reports, Mr. Sales’ action was magnificent. When he heard what was going on, he put on his Hong Kong blazer and went over to the compound and started conversing with his athletes in Cantonese urging them to stay calm. With this heroic action he successfully negotiated with the Palestinians to allow the Hong Kong athletes to go unharmed, a fate denied the Israeli hostages. The Tokyo Games in 1964 saw the one and only time the Hong Kong delegation included a team sport, that being Field Hockey. According to a reliable source, Hong Kong received a wild-card due to two countries dropping out of the Games.

THE OLYMPIC CREED

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. Christ the King Church and the Jesuits in Shanghai By Oscar Collaço

When I was 7 years old (1945), I was invited to be an altar boy at Ste, Jeanne d’Arc High School, in the French Concession, that was run by the Marist Brothers.

After World War II, American influence gradually penetrated the Shanghai Catholic Church, controlling both the seminaries and the important and the well situated Christ the King Parish Church, and, steadily increasing the number of American Jesuit priests and nuns to serve the needs of the many foreign Catholics in this very cosmopolitan City.

The following are some of the names of the Jesuits that came to administer to Christ the King Church Parish in the French Concession District:

Frs. McCarthy (Director of the Jesuit Seminaries), Phillips, McCormack, McGreel, Houle, Gatz,

Lennon, Brennan, Clifford, LeSage, and local products: Frs. Joseph Diniz and George Wong, under

Bishop Auguste Haouisee, a French Jesuit and vicar apostolic who led the region from 1930 to 1948.

I also recall at Sacred Heart Church in the Hongkew District, opposite the St. Francis Xavier College, where many of the Portuguese community resided, there was Fr. Farmer an Englishman and Fr. Bolumburu, a Spaniard with the sweetest high tenor voice.

At Christ the King Church, we had the best choir comprised of many Portuguese parishioners, of which a Laura Diniz had a powerful soprano voice that needed no microphone. Also there was a Dan Sequeira who was the Sacristan at this parish.

I must also mention two relatives: Jesuit Fr. Alberto Roliz, who later left the order; and, Marist Brother Raul Campos Maher who taught both at SJA and at SFX.

After the Communist takeover in 1949, most of the foreign Orders were ordered to close and they were summarily expelled. The poor American Jesuits were either placed into house arrest, expelled if they were very old and sickly, or sent to harsh imprisonment and hard labor concentration camps.

Chinese Jesuit Bishop Ignatius Kung Pinmei took over the diocese of Shanghai after Bishop Haouisee’s death in September 1948. After about 30 years in the Communist jails, because of his loyalty and faithfulness to Rome, he was secretly made Cardinal in 1979 by the newly elected Pope, John Paul II. In 1989 Kung flew to Rome to receive his red hat and was treated to an unprecedented 8-minute standing ovation by the crowd at St. Peter’s.

Also, worth mentioning are the Legion of Mary and the Marian Sodality, probably both founded by the Jesuits as ‘Catholic Youth Movements’. Both stood firm and strong against the many onslaughts perpetrated by the People’s Government of the Chinese Communist Party, to the many remaining young Faithful, who, at many times, openly defied the soldiers who often raided and disrupted their prayer meetings and support groups, that inspired the many fervent Chinese Young Catholics seeking religious freedom.

I would also like to mention French Jesuit, Fr. Robert Jacquinot, who was instrumental in setting up a “safe zone” for Chinese refugees during the Japanese control of Shanghai. He was also assisted by the International Red Cross, and worked collectively with the many nationalities that served in the Shanghai Volunteer Corps. during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai.

Academic Achievement

Congratulations, Dana Priebe, on completing your Doctorate Degree in Psychology. Dana comes with an impressive curriculum vitae, having served as Chapter President and Marketing Manager of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Berkeley, CA and extensive professional experience in Psychotherapy and Advanced Clinical Training Programs. She plans to set up a practice as a Clinical Psychologist. She is married to Ron Priebe, a K9 police officer in Pleasant Hill, CA, and is the daughter of Captain Michael Carion of the Fish and Game Dept. of California, and granddaughter of Patrick and Helen Carion of Weed, CA. We are justifiably proud of you, Dana, another illustrious member of the Macanese community.

Northern California Game Warden Appointed

Michael P. Carion has been named chief of the Law Enforcement Division at the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG).

Carion, a lifelong hunter and angler, has been a DFG warden for more than 30 years. He also teaches waterfowl enforcement techniques and waterfowl identification to cadets at DFG’s academy.

“Throughout my career, I have made every effort to include hunting, fishing and environmental stakeholders in the decision-making process,” said Carion. “I have found we get much better results by working together.”

He graduated in 1980 from Humboldt State University with a degree in wildlife management. He was a seasonal aid on the Klamath River before being hired full-time by DFG in 1981 as a fish and wildlife assistant at the Imperial Wildlife Area.

Carion most recently was Assistant Chief in the 23-county northern region of California. He assumed duties as chief this week.

Carion lives in Anderson with his wife Nicole, a DFG environmental scientist who supervises the statewide restricted species and wildlife rehabilitation program. (Note from Editor: Michael Carion was recently featured in the UMA Bulletin April-June 2011 Issue, page 29. Congratulations Michael for being named Game Warden for Northern California – I am sure the Macanese Community of Fishing and Hunting enthusiasts are celebrating this appointment.

Braga, Pedro Antonio - The youngest son of the late Jose "Jack" and Augusta Braga passed away in Melbourne, Australia on August 26, 2012. He is survived by his wife Marica and children from a previous marriage Joseph, Mary, Judy, John and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was brother to Dr. Carol Braga, the late Dr. Teresa Millar, Mariazinha Braga, Angela Ablong, Dr. Antonio "Chico" Braga and Jose "Zeca" Braga. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sydney and specialized in telecommunication management in Australia, Holland and Brazil. He was recently with the United Nations assisting in establishing the telecom network in the newly formed nation of East Timor.

Collaço, Angelina Cecilia Remedios passed away on Monday afternoon, August 27, 2012 in São Paulo, Brazil. She had celebrated her 92 Birthday on August 04, 2012. She and Gilberto Collaço were married for 56 years and had four children, Bernardo, Roberto, Jacinta and Estela; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She dedicated her life to love, prayers, strength and attention with patience, care and understanding. Always there to help, to give, to share…The family was blessed to have her as the heart of the family - She taught them kindness and caring, simply by being those things herself. “Mom Angelina will always be remembered with love, care and gratitude, being a very special mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and my very special and best friend”, wrote Jacinta. Always there for family, friends and everyone she met. She was trying to recover from her hip fracture/surgery for almost a year, unfortunately her muscular strength weakened. Lately had lost her appetite and only wanted to quench her thirst with water. Suffering with pain and not being able to move her legs, made her upset. Always saying “please”, “thank you”, “so sorry to give you trouble”, etc... so kind and educated in her mind, ways and heart. The family wish to thank the many relatives and friends who have expressed their sorrow, condolence, prayers and thoughtful considerations in so many ways. May her soul rest in peace. The family will miss her…

da Silva, Manuela (Malita) Marques born to Maria Madelena and Luiz Marques da Silva in Shanghai, China on 11/19/1916. She was the last survivor of four half siblings: Joaquim Ribeiro, Sara Ribeiro Tavares, Alda Ribeiro and Helder Ribeiro, and her siblings: Fernando Augusto da Silva, Federico Francisco da Silva and Fernanda da Silva Gonsalves. Manuel came to the United States in April 1957 and settled in San Francisco Alda, her older sister and mother all joined and shared with their sister, Fernanda and her family a huge flat at 705 Haight St. She was a secretary and worked for Penn Mutual Life ands the Continental Insurance Company until she retired .She was then a resident of the Menorah Park Senior Residence for many years and will be greatly missed by her longtime dear friend and companion of more than fifty years Jerry Ferguson, her 3 nieces and 1 nephew, grand nieces and grand nephews and all her dear friends.

Obituary

Gomes, Francisco Antonio – the youngest son of Luiz and Maria Gomes passed away on Sunday, July 15th 2012 in his home in Antioch, Ca. He is survived by his wife Guida; his children Francisco (wife Sheena), Carlos, Miguel, and Gabriella, and his grandchildren Jenny and Brian; his brother Daniel (wife Maria); his sister Melin (husband John); many nephew and nieces and very good friends. At the age of 17 he joined the British Merchant Marine as an officer cadet, and sailed into most of the exotic port cities around the world – Poland, Poyang, Vladivostok, China, etc. In 1958 he left the service to settle down in Hong Kong and joined the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. He and his family left for San Francisco in search of a better life and joined Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco in the 60’s. He retired from Wells Fargo Bank after a long and interesting career with the Bank where he made many lasting friendships and he keep in touch with many of his colleagues in his retirement. He had a very engaging personality which endeared him to all his friends and colleagues. He will be sorely missed by all.

Peres, Reinaldo de Lima (Rene) passed away on September 3, 2012 in Vancouver, B.C. He was 81. He is survived by his aunt Norma Castilho, cousins Tony Castilho, Daniel (Gail) Remedios, Vilma Remedios, Tony (Katie) Remedios, Marco Remedios and Annamaria (Jay) Swardenski. Rene will be remembered for his fondness for mahjong and bingo even winning a car following ten $1000 prizes and then choosing the right key to turn the engine on. The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and condolences.�

Remedios, Roy - Past President of the East Bay Chapter of UMA passed away while on holiday with his family, in Southern California. He is survived by his wife Betty and their three sons, Chris, Michael, Allen, their spouses and 7 grandchildren. �
