New Era Begins Under Kiefer The Southeastern Louisiana men’s bas-ketball team begins a new era under Head Coach David Kiefer for the 2019-20 sea-son. Kiefer, a Kansas State grad, takes over after being the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for the Lions under former SLU head coach Jay Ladner for the last four seasons. The road back to the top of the Southland Conference won’t be easy for the Lions. SLU will be looking to replace their top two scorers from last year in first team All-Southland selections Marlain Veal (15.9 ppg, 4.4 apg) and Moses Greenwood (17.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg). The Lions return two starters from a year ago including senior Von Julien and junior Brandon Gonzalez. Julien, a Reserve, Louisiana native, start-ed all 33 games for SLU and led the team in minutes played with 1,126. The Riverside Academy grad was second on the team behind Veal with 136 assists. The senior was rock solid in Southland Conference games averaging 7.5 points and 5.1 assists. Gonzalez, a Punta Gorda, Florida prod-uct, was inserted into the starting lineup last year after 10 games. The 6-6 guard averaged 7.7 points and 4.3 rebounds a game over the final 23 games of the sea-son. The Lions will look to returners Pape Diop, Ty Brewer and Maxwell Starwood to fill in the lane with the departure of Greenwood and Keith Charleston. Brewer (6-7, 210) showed flashes of the future last year. The Meridian, Mississippi native scored nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 69-53 win at Northwestern State to aid SLU while Greenwood was in foul trouble. Diop (6-9, 205), like Brewer, was instru-mental in SLU’s resurgence last year after a tough start. The Senegal native played in 17 games last year but saw few minutes due to Greenwood and Charleston’s dominance. He still showed what he is capable of pro-viding valuable minutes off the bench. Starwood (6-9, 230) provides the Lions with a ton of size and strength down low. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native was a big piece of Southeastern’s resurgence in the second half of the season. The junior helped the Lions to a couple of road wins in conference at Houston Baptist and Central Arkansas when Greenwood was in foul trouble. His playing time, with the

departure of Greenwood and Charleston, could go up tremendously this season. Also returning for the Lions is sophomore Jeremiah Saunders (6-3, 200). The Fort Lauderdale, Florida product showed the ability to shoot the three-pointer last year. Saunders, in his only start of the season, drilled four threes in the first half against Sam Houston State. The newcomers bring a lot of intrigue to the Lions as Kiefer brought nine new faces to the program. Sophomores LaQuan Butler, and Avery Wilson as well as fresh-men Max Brackmann, Nick Caldwell, McKay Howell, Bryce Johnson, Isiah Kirby, Maxim Romanov and Byron Smith join the pro-gram.

Scouting the Commodores Vanderbilt (4-1) enters Monday’s con-test coming off back-to-back home wins over Austin Peay State and South Carolina State. The Commodores, under rookie head coach and former NBA superstar Jerry Stackhouse, are led by second team pre-season All-SEC selection Aaron Nesmith (F- 6-6 - 213). The junior is averaging 25.3 points per game and is shooting 61 percent from the field (45-for-73) and 56 percent (25-for-44) from the three-point line. The Vanderbilt back court includes a familiar name as well. Scotty Pippen Jr., the son of six-time NBA champion for the Chicago Bulls Scottie Pippen. Pippen Jr. is averaging 11 points and four assists per game through the first five contests.

SLU-Vanderbilt Series The Lions and Commodores have only met two times with Vanderbilt winning both contests. The Commodores defeated Southeastern, 85-52, in Nashville, Tennessee Dec. 18, 2010. The Lions got 16 points from Gary Dixon including four three-pointers while the Commodores got 15 points each from Jeffrey Taylor and Steve Tchiengang. Week Long Layoff Awaits Lions Southeastern will have eight days in between games following Monday night’s contest at Vanderbilt. The Lions will return to action Tuesday Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. when they take on in-state rival UL-Lafayette (3-2) on the road.

Lions to play Road-Heavy Schedule The Southeastern Louisiana men’s bas-ketball team will play a road-heavy schedule under first-year head coach David Kiefer. The Lions (17-16, 12-6 Southland in 2018) will once again be challenged in the non-conference schedule under Kiefer’s new regime. Southeastern will play road games at Vanderbilt, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Tulane, Austin Peay and UL Lafayette. The Lions will also get a rematch with Ole Miss in Jackson, Mississippi after playing in 2018. “We have a challenging and competitive non-conference schedule,” said Kiefer. “We want to make sure that we have ourselves prepared for a very difficult conference schedule with now playing 20 games.” SLU will have four non-conference home games with the first being Monday, Nov. 11 against Xavier (La.) at 7 p.m. The Lions will also take on Grambling State Wednesday, Nov. 13, in a rematch from last year where GSU defeated SLU 68-67. Southeastern will get a third straight home game Sunday, Nov. 17, when they host Mobile (Ala.) at 1 p.m.

Kiefer Adds Experience,Youth to Staff SLU head coach David Kiefer brought in an extremely talented coaching staff to help the new-look Lions. The staff includes Mark Lieberman, Patrick Schulte and Jordan Brooks. Lieberman joins the Lions’ staff with an impressive resume. The New York, New York native, coached under former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino from 2010-2012 helping guide the Cardinals to the Final Four in 2012. Following the 2012 season, Lieberman was hired by Pitino’s son, Richard, as an assistant coach at Florida International. FIU finished the season 18-14 and advanced to the Sunbelt Conference Tournament Championship game. Prior to his stint in Louisville, Lieberman was a successful high school coach for 16 years. He guided Monsignor Pace to five Florida state championships (including one as an assistant), three runner-up finishes and 10 total Elite Eight appearances while compiling a 335-95 record in 13 seasons. “I’ve known Mark for years,” said Kiefer. “And I know what kind of coach and man that he is. He is going to bring a lot of expertise and wisdom to the program that you can’t find just anywhere. He’s definitely one of the hardest

working and most passionate coaches in the country.” Schulte joins the SLU staff after serving as video coordinator for two years for Illinois out of the Big 10 Conference. The Senaca, Kansas native, served as video coordinator for head coach Brad Underwood for the 2016-17 season at Oklahoma State as well as his first two seasons at Stephen F. Austin. In between SFA and OSU, Schulte spent the 2015-16 season as director of video for Coach Frank Martin at South Carolina. Schulte spent three years as student man-ager at Kansas State, serving as head manager during the 2012-13 season under Coach Bruce Weber. “Patrick is a great young basketball mind,” said Kiefer. “He has worked under some great coaches including coach (Brad) Underwood and (Frank) Martin. He is going to be a huge asset to the program when it comes to scouting and skill development. He’s really a rising star in the coaching profession.” Brooks, a Largo, Maryland native, comes to Southeastern after coaching the previous two seasons at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Brooks helped guide Howard to the MEAC Conference Tournament semifinals last year finishing the season at 17-17. Brooks was also selected to the Top 30 NABC top upcom-ing coaches following the season. Prior to Howard, Brooks coached and recruited at the 14U, 15U, and 16U grass-root levels while developing several NCAA Division I student-athletes from top programs in the Washington D.C. area which include DC Assault, Team Takeover, Team Durant, and Team St8ment. “Having a guy with Jordan’s resume on board will be huge for us,” said Kiefer. “I think he is going to be a huge asset to helping develop these young guys that we have. He is a tireless recruiter that I fully believe can help bring us the type of talent and character we need to stay near the top of the conference.”

Kiefer, now in his fifth season with Southeastern, was named the 13th head coach in program history on July 2, 2019 following SLU’s 12-6 fin-ish in the Southland Conference and 17-16 overall record this past season. The Lions advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament for the 15th time before falling in the semi-finals to Abilene Christian, 69-66.

The 34-year old helped guide the Lions to the Southland Conference regular season title in 2017-18 finish-ing 22-12 and 15-3 in the conference.

It was the program’s first con-ference title since the 2004-2005 season. SLU advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to Stephen F. Austin, 59-55. . The 22 wins was second most in program history (24 in 2004-05).

Kiefer helped Southeastern to a .500 record in 2016-17 as the Lions finished 16-16 before losing to Lamar in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.

Southeastern advanced to the tour-nament for the fifth straight year after finishing seventh in the league with a 9-9 record. The Lions had a 4 1/2-game improvement from 2015-16 despite having three potential starters miss the season with injuries.

Kiefer has worked with the Southeastern guards and coordinat-ing the Lions’ recruiting efforts. In 2016-17, he helped guard Marlain Veal blossom into one of the top players in the Southland Conference. Veal, concluded his career as the second leading scorer in program history, and all-time leader in assists and steals.

On the recruiting trail, Kiefer brought in a highly-regarded recruiting class this past offseason featuring five fresh-man, a junior college transfer and a Boston College transfer.

Prior to coming to Southeastern, Kiefer spent a year on the staff at South Carolina, serving as the team’s director of video services. At South Carolina he handled all aspects of the Gamecocks’ video services, serving also as coordinator for Frank Martin’s Summer Camps.

Kiefer previously served as an assistant coach at Northwest Florida State College where he handled team travel, recruiting and individual player development, along with opponent scouting and film exchange. The 2013-14 campaign saw all eight of its sopho-mores graduate, with each signing to play Division I basketball. Prior to his time with the Raiders, Kiefer served as an assistant coach at Jones County Junior College (2012-13), as an assistant at Arlington Country Day High School (2011-12), as a volunteer video assistant

at Central Florida (2010-11), as the head junior varsity and assistant var-sity coach at St. Mary’s Ryken of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), and as a stu-dent manager at Kansas State (2006-08) and in the same capacity at Cincinnati (2005-06).

Kiefer’s recruiting classes during his tenures at Northwest Florida and Jones County provided the founda-tion for national championships at both institutions.

Kiefer also assisted with two pow-erhouse AAU programs, the Florida Rams and the D.C. Assault.

Kiefer graduated from Kansas State with a degree in social sciences in 2007, and he received his master’s degree from Salem International in 2013. Kiefer and his wife Mia have a son, Austin, and two twin daughters, Kayden and Nola.

“I’m extremely thankful to (uni-versity president) Dr. John Crain, Mr. Jay Artigues (SLU Athletic direc-tor) and our administration for the opportunity to lead the Southeastern men’s basketball program,” Kiefer said. “Coach (former SLU coach Jay Ladner) left our program in tremen-dous shape and I’ll always be appre-ciative to him for bringing myself and my family to Hammond. I’m blessed to have the chance to build on our initial success and am eager to con-tinue to grow our program on and off the court.”
