Inspiration can go both ways. It was a sunny spring day that sent Alex Neumann to

the skate park in Estevan last Saturday. The 19-year-old Bienfait native has been skating for about six years and he expected May 4 would probably just be another run of the mill session around the half pipes.

Mötley Crüe was going to be playing a show in Spectra Place that night. The Los Angeles rockers of more than 30 years were parked be-hind the venue that day. From his bus, bass player Nikki Sixx looked out and watched some of the kids who were skateboard-ing nearby.

It was Neu-mann, in particular, who caught his attention because Neumann had both of his legs amputated at the knees at a young age. He rides his board a little differently than most, and Sixx, who has become an avid photographer wanted to shoot him as he pulled some tricks in the park.

Neumann said someone approached him, asking if he knew who Mötley Crüe and Sixx were.

“I said ‘of course,’ and he told me how Nikki Sixx was watching me from his bus and wonder-ing if I would be OK with doing a photo shoot with him,” Neumann said, recalling that he replied, “absolutely.”

Neumann said he is a big Mötley Crüe fan and had seen some of Sixx’s photography be-fore. Even so, he wasn’t expecting the bassist would be interested in shooting him.

“We talked a little bit. He was interested in some of the things that I would be able to do, so we talked about what I could. I showed him and he was pretty intrigued by

that, so he set up and took some photos here and there.”He said he was little shaky when Sixx fi rst started

taking some photos, but after he got going, he just skated like he normally would.

On his Tumblr page, Sixx added some of the photos he took of Neumann and wrote a brief post about his meeting with the Bienfait skater.

Sixx wrote “I meet new people ev-eryday and some days I walk away and think I just wasted 20 minutes of my life. Not today. I feel inspired. Thank you Alex.”

Neumann has read the full entry and was touched by the sentiment.

“It was defi nitely heart touching hear-ing that someone like him was inspired by someone like me,” said Neumann. “We just talked about how

even though I have pros-thetic legs, I really don’t let things slow me down. I have to push myself a little harder than what people with legs would push themselves.”

Sixx told Neumann a story about a girl he met in L.A. who also lost her legs but kept snowboarding and

was still a great athlete. Neumann was stricken a little by Sixx’s

easy demeanour. “He’s almost like a typical guy when he’s

out in public. He doesn’t really play the whole rock star persona. He doesn’t really play that part. He’s an everyday typical guy who you can just talk with and have a chat.”

After their photo shoot and conversation, Sixx gave Neumann some tickets to the show. Appropriately, he gave him six tickets, front row and right on the fl oor.

“I took a couple of really close friends of mine and we had a blast,” said Neu-mann. “I didn’t have tickets or anything, so it was a nice change of plans.”

You can visit Sixx’s page to see some photos he took of Neumann at http://nsixx-foto.tumblr.com/

The warmth, the sun and the longer days bring so many possibilities.

I’m a man of the summer. I like doing things outside. Even things that can be done indoors I prefer to do in the fresh air, with the breeze gently disturbing my surroundings.

It’s nice to curl up with a good book on the couch, but it’s so much better to sprawl out on a Muskoka chair in your backyard with the sun’s rays cutting through the leaves of the tree you’ve chosen to seek shelter beneath. It’s so relaxing as a quiet wind ripples across the pages of the book, a bird chirps from a distant branch and some jerk in a jacked up truck revs his engine as he whips through an otherwise peaceful residential area.

I am beginning to build up my sum-mer reading list, which includes Chuck Wendig’s The Blue Blazes that I am very excited about, as well as Promise of Blood, the fi rst book in Brian McClellan’s new trilogy. If you have any books to share that I should have on my reading list, please let me know. No new Dan Brown books, please.

There is a lot more to do outside than read. The other indoor activity that I re-

ally love doing beyond the walls of my abode is cook. Everybody loves barbecue season, and while you can burn some propane and grill a pork chop in the heart of frostbite season, it’s that time of year when you can sit outside as you cook. That way you can smell exactly what you’re cooking, which is what makes barbecuing so spectacular in the fi rst place.

It’s no fun grilling when you have to jump in and out of the house to do it. That makes it a chore, and while cooking can be a chore, there is something very tranquil about singeing the edges of a steak on a quiet summer evening that sets it apart from boiling water and ensuring the pot doesn’t spill over after you add your pasta.

And I know everybody around here likes to take their cars and gigantic trucks to car washes, but I still like to wash my own car with the help of my friends Frodo

and Spud (my fi sts). There’s defi nitely something therapeutic about spending some tender, quality time with your car.

I like to turn on some tunes as I give Patsy Walker a nice scrub and a shower in the sun.

It’s one of those things that just feels good to do. It’s kind of like sitting around a campfi re. There’s something deeply in-grained in us as people that really gives us comfort as we wash our cars by hand. You don’t get that same satisfaction of a job well done as you wait in a line for 15 minutes waiting to roll through the misty car wash showers.

They may get the job done, but I’d take a hose and a bucket of water with suds any day. At the very least it gets you outside for a brief time on a Sunday afternoon.

What makes all of these activities that much better is preparing the drink of your choice in either glass or bottle form. You might think I’m crazy, but I am 99 per cent sure that condensation on the outside of your glass makes a drink taste that much better. There must be some scientific explanation that would back me up but I haven’t heard about yet.

It’s the season of outside doing

Scientifi c progress should be closely monitoredIn addition to holding basically a life-

time interest in agriculture, I also happen to be a fan of science fi ction.

The two areas of interest occasionally converge, and frankly I am never sure if that is a good or bad thing.

On the one hand there is the Gene Rod-denberry vision of science fi ction exempli-fi ed by his Star Trek works. Not everything in the world of scientifi c development is without its bumps in the Star Trek world, smaller bumps were seen pre-Hollywood, but humankind always dealt with such bumps in a way that left our species enjoy-ing a rather enlightened future.

Aldous Huxley, in A Brave New World, didn’t see things as rosily as Roddenberry, and it would seem most science fiction writers fall into the Huxley camp in terms of what lies ahead, even if many ultimately see the human spirit triumphing.

By now, as a reader, you are wondering what this has to do with farming.

Well regular readers will know I am a pretty big proponent of genetic modifi cation in agriculture, and that view hasn’t changed.

In a perfect world we might not need GMO, but our species has long ago made sure Earth is far from perfect anymore.

And a bit like locusts and lemmings, we continue to wildly grow world popula-tion, leaving us few options but to look for innovative ways to feed everyone.

That is why I shudder at a development

such as the so-called “terminator gene” tech-nology which would have crops producing essentially sterile grain. It puts too much control of food production in commercial hands and takes it away from everyday people.

Now I read about Monsanto’s research and development work on RNA interference (RNAi) for pest management.

Apparently RNA interference is a pro-cess to turn down or shut off the expression of certain genes, which suppresses the pro-duction of a specifi c protein in an organism, which I’ll admit is a concept well above Grade 12 biology taken 35 years ago even if Jim Weseen was a fi ne instructor.

“In the case of crop pests, RNAi could potentially shut down proteins related to metabolism or reproduction, thus killing or disabling target insects,” related a recent Western Producer article. “... RNA interfer-ence is alluring because it can be tailored to a specifi c pest, unlike pesticides that kill harmful and benefi cial insects alike.”

So, yes I can see the faces of researchers and even those of farmers lighting up.

The ability to attack particular insects with a specifi c RNAi created application, and have it be effective, sounds great.

We are after all, aware that when you spray for a certain bad bug, you generally take all its benefi cial cousins with it.

But there are inherent concerns that come with such science.

Nature has a way of mutating organ-isms, and we also know organisms inher-ently adapt, that is why some poisons now affect rats less than they once did, germs become resistant to certain medications, and weeds to certain herbicides.

How nature might adapt to RNA changes over the long term is a mystery that harkens back to my science fi ction interest, and it might not be particularly good.

There is also the issue that while in its purest form science is neither good nor bad, people are far more white and black.

One should always worry at least a little about what sort of applications a science might be being adapted for in a few military bunkers and mad-men labs out there. Wae might like to think such things are merely the stuff of fi ction, but we only need to look at some of the research being undertaken in Nazi Germany to know science can be easily twisted.

The more that science fl irts with chang-ing the building blocks of life, the more diligent we need to be before accepting even the fi rst step down such an uncertain road.

Clean UpGuides, Brownies and Sparks teamed up on the morning of Saturday, May 4 to spend some time doing some litter picking on the ECS grounds near Kensington Avenue and along the beltway to Spruce Ridge School. It was all part of their annual Tim Hortons Cleanup Campaign. The cleaning blitz attracted about 30 youngsters plus leaders.

Show N’ ShineThe Relay for Life project is scheduled for all of May weekends at the Estevan Shoppers Mall. One of the fi rst events staged on May 4 was a custom car and truck show and shine event in the parking lot with proceeds being directed toward the fi ght for cancer cures.

A son has a special place inyour heart that nothing can

ever changeDeep in our hearts lies a

picture of you moreprecious than gold.

You had the most beautifulsmile that no one can

ever forget. You had so much life to liveBut it was taken away so

suddenNot able to say goodbye is so hard

Life just hasn’t been thesame without you.

You are missed so muchTyson

You will always be in ourhearts and prayers

As will Colton and Arthur.Sadly Missed - Love Your Family.
