Change is happeningIt’s been a great summer in South Tyneside – and there is much more to look forward to.Our borough is well known for its first class events and festival programme, and this year has been better than ever, with over 100,000 music lovers enjoying great days out ranging from Toploader, Rick Astley and The South to the Sound Waves concert featuring McFly, Little Mix and Joe McElderry and guests.

People turned out in big numbers for occasions like the Summer Festival Parade and Armed Forces Day, and the Foghorn Requiem event at Souter Lighthouse put South Tyneside in the international media spotlight. With the 33rd Great North Run and a new Christmas Wonderland programme coming up, there is much more to look forward to.

Regeneration and jobs are a top priority for the Council, and we are making real progress with an ambitious range of projects. I’m delighted that we have selected Muse Developments, a leading national developer, to deliver our £100million vision for South Shields Town Centre.

Another key milestone is the appointment of Willmott Dixon to build Hebburn’s new community hub, which will bring superb new facilities to the town. Meanwhile, major developments like the new promenade at Littlehaven beach, Haven Point pool and leisure complex and the waterfront Harton Quays Park are also at an advanced stage.

South Tyneside is facing the second biggest reduction in Government funding in the whole country, but we will continue to invest in a better future for our borough.

Change is happeningAll across South Tyneside the Council is delivering projects to provide a better future for the borough’s communities with regeneration, jobs and economic growth being at the heart of our vision.

Making the vision a reality

A leading developer has been selected to take forward South Shields 365. Muse Developments - one of the country’s leading names in property development and urban regeneration - will deliver the £100million masterplan which aims to make South Shields an exciting destination every day of the year.

Muse is a national developer best known in the North East for its transformation of Newcastle’s Quayside. More recently the company was Durham City’s partner in the Walkergate development, including a cafe, bars and restaurants as well as 35 apartments and a 100-bedroom hotel. Muse is currently working with Stockton Council to deliver a £300million mixed use development on the Northshore site.

Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “Muse’s track record of delivering successful town centre regeneration is second to none, and the company will bring further expertise, innovation and financial strength to our

plans. South Shields 365 is an ambitious vision for a radical redevelopment and this appointment is a major step towards making the vision a reality.”

David Wells, Development Director at Muse Developments, said: “This is an exciting challenge for Muse. Successful regeneration is about much more than bricks and mortar. It is about creating sustainable, vibrant communities where people are proud to live and work. South Shields has the potential to be a fantastic example of how regeneration can transform an area, and we look forward to working with the Council and the local community in achieving this.”

South Shields 365 will create a new cinema, library, retail and leisure facilities, a quality hotel, new housing and a new transport interchange.

Change is happening

Balfour Beatty has finished construction work on the new Harton Quays Park next to the ferry landing in South Shields. The waterfront has been transformed with a beautiful riverside promenade, a new water feature, a dramatic ‘ribbon wall’ that runs through the site and lots of areas to sit back and enjoy views of the river.

The new lawns and borders are still settling in and it will be a few months until the public have access to these areas. The new performance amphitheatre also needs time for the grassed areas to establish. In the meantime however, why not go down and have a look at what promises to be a popular attraction in the town for many years to come?

Several key milestones have been achieved over the last few months in preparation for work to start on site in Hebburn. 184 residents have successfully been relocated and 7 housing blocks have already been demolished with clearance work continuing across other key sites to allow for the delivery of the masterplan which includes not only a fantastic new Community Hub with a library, swimming pools, sports hall, gym, learning centre and other customer service facilities, but also paves the way for the building of quality new homes and shopping facilities improving the retail offer.

For more information about the projects mentioned or other regeneration projects please visit www.southtyneside.info/regeneration

New seawall starts to take shapeWork at Littlehaven is progressing well with major site clearance works and the initial phase of earthworks complete. If you have been down to the seafront and enjoyed a walk along Littlehaven Beach over the summer you will have seen the new stepped seawall taking shape. The second phase of the earthworks has commenced with the filling of the land behind the newly created seawall.

Over the coming months, the contractors, Galliford Try, will be pressing on with the £5million project which will also result in a new promenade for residents and visitors to enjoy. Further information and regular updates can be found at www.southtyneside.info/littlehaven or why not pop into the visitor information centre which has been set up onsite at Littlehaven.

South Tyneside Council is committed to providing more new, affordable homes and making the borough a better place to live.

Building new communitiesSince 2010, the Council has worked with partners to build 212 new homes in South Tyneside. This year saw work start on site across the borough which will see over 250 further homes being built.

However, as well as building new homes, the Council, in association with South Tyneside Homes, has been working tirelessly to improve Council-owned properties. £217million has been invested, with £176million coming from Decent Homes Funding, resulting in:

• 14,000 homes have been made decent• 7,400 homes have had their single glazing changed

to double glazing• 9,600 homes have received internal upgrades of

kitchens and bathrooms• 1,321 families have been alleviated from fuel poverty

in the borough in 2011/12 and 2012/13

In addition, many families have received improvements to their home to provide better insulation.

The Council will continue to work with the private sector and South Tyneside Homes to ensure there is not only enough housing for people in the borough but to also ensure that there is the right quality of housing available.

New Housing VentureApproval was given at Cabinet on 10th July 2013 to establish a new special purpose vehicle to enable the development of affordable homes across the borough. The Council is currently working to identify sites for future development.

Local resident, John Short, can often be seen out and about in the borough taking wonderful photographs that beautifully capture South Tyneside. John shares his images via his page on Facebook, See Tyne and Wear Differently, www.facebook.com/ctynewear

After capturing some of the beautiful displays of wildflowers planted this year by the Council as part of a new environmental project, John decided to put his images on Facebook and ask his followers to like or comment to show their support for the new Wildflower Meadows scheme. The response was incredible, John said: “To my amazement, over 10,500 people have viewed the images and 500 people have clicked ‘like’ and there were many positive comments.”

The Wildflower Meadows scheme is a new project designed to not only enhance the environment, support local wildlife and maintain the beauty of the borough but is also a way of tackling large central government budget cuts. Replacing grassed areas with wildflower

meadows will lead to over a £330,000 saving.

There are a variety of different meadows across the borough sown with different seed mixtures, some annual mixtures which include exotics, and some British native mixes. The British wildflower meadows can be seen at Whitburn cliff tops, Hebburn Riverside Park and by Primrose Terrace in Jarrow, whereas the more exotic seed mixes from Pictorial Meadows have been sown in more urban or formal settings.

Look out for:

• The Pastel mix - a beautiful ‘strawberries and cream’ mix of white and pink with a scattering of clear blue

• The Candy mix - a collection of sweet purples, playful yellows, radiant reds with a splash of wispy-whites and baby-blues

• The Contrasting mix - a vibrant mix of orange and yellow with contrasting blue and reds

Celebrating 30 years of outdoor educationSouth Tyneside Council celebrates 30 years of owning Thurston outdoor education centre located at Coniston Water in the heart of the Lake District National Park.

Managed by Andy Stubbs for the last 30 years, Thurston offers schools, colleges and youth organisations a resource that provides top class packages including team working, outward bound activities and quality accommodation.

The 43 acre Lakeland base is an ideal location for intensive curriculum based courses in subjects like geography, environmental science, sports, literacy, numeracy and art as well as providing lots of young people with the opportunity to enhance their self-motivation, self-confidence and self-esteem.

“2000 young people, aged 10-18 years old, walk through the doors at Thurston each year”

To mark the 30th anniversary, one of the country’s most decorated mountaineers Alan Hinkes OBE alongside the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Ernest

Gibson and Patricia Ridley, abseiled down South Shields Town Hall.

The Mayor and Mayoress prepared for their big day by receiving specialist training from the team at Simonside Outdoor Adventure. Councillor Ernest Gibson said: “Working with the team over the past few weeks, I’ve seen close-up just how much they do to help young people learn the skills they need for life – things like communication, working together and also self-reliance.

North East mountain climber, Alan Hinkes OBE, the first Briton to climb all of the world’s 8000 metre peaks, said: “It is a real honour to be here, and it’s fantastic that South Tyneside continues to support outdoor education.

“As an outdoor education teacher myself, I have seen at first-hand just what a difference it makes for young people to take them out of their urban comfort zone and help them to develop their resilience in a different environment.”

The local ‘Friends of East Boldon Parks’ group set about raising funds for a new park after identifying a lack of safe play facilities for younger children in the area.

Working in partnership with South Tyneside Council, the ‘Friends’ group helped to design the play area which has a ladybird and bumblebee theme and features all the traditional playground essentials such as swings, a roundabout, seesaw and a large multi-use frame and fitness trail as well as picnic tables and seating.

Louise Rea, of Friends of East Boldon Parks, said: “This is an exciting, welcoming and safe interactive free play area for children up to 12 years of age encouraging physical activity and imaginative play, promoting healthy living and respect of the environment in which we live.”

In addition contributions came from South Tyneside Council and the West Shields, Cleadon and East Boldon Community Area Forum, as well as Awards granted from SITA Trust, which was the main contributor, as well as the Port of Tyne and the Dulverton Trust.

Thanks to a £74,000 investment, families can now enjoy an exciting new play area in Mundles Lane, East Boldon.

It’s been a busy summer for the Mayor and Mayoress with a whole host of engagements.

From representing the borough at the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and a tour of HMS Tyne to joining in with thousands of residents and visitors at this year’s summer festival and abseiling from the roof of the Town Hall, the Major and Mayoress have enjoyed every moment.

Mayor of South Tyneside, Cllr Ernest Gibson said: “It’s a real honour and privilege to wear the chains and represent the people of the borough. The Mayoress and I are given the chance to attend a wide range of engagements, and at each and every occasion we talk about how South Tyneside is a wonderful place to live, invest and bring up families.”

“I’ve also stuck by my promise of wanting to be known as the people’s Mayor and ensuring that our door is always open to anyone who wants to drop by, as this is your Town Hall and this is your borough. With this in mind, we have set up regular events for youth groups and schools to enjoy weekly tours of the building, as it’s important to tell young people about their heritage. It was the same sentiment behind the reintroduction of the Mayor’s robes, this is the first time in nearly forty years they have been officially used by the Mayor of South Tyneside, making a little bit of history for the borough.”

“If the coming months are as exciting and fulfilling as the previous few, then we are going to create special friendships and fond memories for us to treasure.”

Equally, the Mayoress, Patricia Ridley is enjoying her new public role: “I absolutely love every single minute of being the Mayoress of South Tyneside. It’s a fantastic opportunity for a working mam and nana like myself, to meet so many different people and learn about their experiences in the borough.

“What I’ve particularly enjoyed so far is the variety of community events we attend from the opening of a school through to having a chat over a cup of tea at a residential home. Time is flying by really quickly and we are looking forward to the next part of our journey.”

Recycle for another day!Fortnightly bin and recycling collections were rolled out across South Tyneside in March and April this year. There were a number of reasons for this but an important factor was to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Recycling is the best way forward for a better and brighter future for our residents and future generations. Landfill sites are filling up fast but they release harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In addition, products made from raw materials require huge amounts of energy whereas recycling requires much less energy, therefore helping preserve natural resources.

HAVE YOU Ever wondered what happens to your recycling AFTER it IS collected?

The materials are unloaded for sorting Any objects that can’t be recycled are identified and removed

All paper materials from your caddy are sorted and materials that can’t be recycled are removed

The sorted, recyclable materials are fed onto a conveyer belt

The materials are then sent through a V screen which separates the recycling materials into:

Congratulations and thank youFollowing the changes to collections we can report that between May – July 2013,

in comparison with these months last year:

Recycling has increased by an amazing 12.4% - this is an increase of 333 tonnes Residents waste figures have reduced by 8.5% saving 878 tonnes from landfill!

Fostering Transforms Lives

Mark and Alison, who have been Foster Carers since May 2012 find it very rewarding:

“The process we have gone through to become Foster Carers has been very rewarding and the skills that we were taught have helped us to understand the needs of children as well as prepared us for our career as Foster Carers.

We know that we have made a significant difference to the lives of young people we are caring for. To watch them grow up and develop is a huge reward for us. The training and support given by the Fostering team has been invaluable. They are always on hand, day or night to offer advice and

assistance. Our own Support Officer is not only our mentor, but she has become a brilliant friend. You could also make a difference to the lives of others. It’s only a phone call away. Give it a try and make a difference.”

Mrs Reid, who is 95 and lives in Winship Close in South Shields, is happy to relax and enjoy a cup of tea at home, thanks to security equipment fitted by Telecare Services.

The fall detector can sense a drop in air pressure and would automatically send a call to our wardens, if Mrs Reid fell. The wardens would then speak to Mrs Reid over the intercom to assess the situation and provide help if needed.

The wardens are on duty 24/7 and provide immediate assistance such as getting medical help, contacting relatives and using specialist equipment to help move people safely and comfortably.

Mrs Reid said: “This equipment is excellent and makes me feel really safe in my own home knowing that I could have help day or night. It’s helped me to stay independent as I really want to live alone in my own home, and without it, I don’t think that I would be able to.

“This equipment is excellent and makes me feel really safe in my own home”

I have had a fall in the past and was on the floor all night until someone found

Launched in August, Online at Home supplies local residents with a laptop or desktop computer for their personal use on loan for up to 6 months! 36 computers were made available on a first-come, first-served basis with support provided by a number of IT volunteers to help with set-up and training on up-to-date Microsoft Office software, internet and email access.

The aim of the project is to support residents who experience social isolation, are living alone with poor access to transport, poor health or mobility issues and have a lack of knowledge or access to technology. Research has identified that the main issues preventing older residents from accessing IT in South Tyneside are a lack of skills, cost involved, technical support and access to IT equipment.

The benefits of going online include:• increased communication with family

and friends• improved independence• reduced isolation• increased community involvement• improved shopping accessibility with

doorstep deliveries • improved IT skills• access to a wide range of services

At the end of the 6 months residents will be able to purchase the computer with software, at a nominal cost.

Centre of ExcellenceAge UK South Tyneside is regarded as a ‘centre of excellence’ for the delivery of IT services. Training provided by local and national partners is receiving highly positive feedback from residents. Mrs Hill said: “Tutors were professional, helpful and very informative. Loved every minute and know where to come to for advice in the future.”

Age UK South Tyneside also offers a wide range of courses including basic computing, saving money online, photography and social media. For more information call 0191 456 6903 or visit www.ageuksouthtyneside.org.uk

In April, the Government implemented some of the changes to benefits that form part of Welfare Reform and the mechanisms the Council put in place have been helping residents through the process. Read on to find out how one resident has been affected by the changes and the support he has received.

Let us help you

Paul Fenwick, from Low Simonside in Jarrow, lives on his own in a 2 bedroom Council house. The introduction of the Housing Benefit Size Criteria (Bedroom Tax) in April has meant that he is now being charged £10.44 per week for under occupancy. Struggling with finances as a result of the changes, Mr Fenwick turned to South Tyneside Homes’ Welfare Reform Team for advice and support.

The Welfare Reform Team helped Mr Fenwick:

• with a Discretionary Housing Payments application - a discretionary fund managed by the Council to help people meet shortfalls in rent payments in the short term. This was awarded and Mr Fenwick’s rent account is now in small amount of credit

• resolve a debt issue with EDF Energy in relation to his electricity

• apply for a crisis grant from a charity for gas arrears

• realise he would be better off in full time employment

Mr Fenwick, who is now actively looking for work in the construction industry, said: “Before the changes came in, I was worried sick from rumours and didn’t know what to do. The service provided by South Tyneside Homes’ Welfare Reform Team has made dealing with the changes much easier. Since my initial appointment I have managed to reduce my energy bills and now feel more in control of my finances. I’ve told family and friends about the service, which has been brilliant for me, and would advise anyone affected by changes to their benefits to contact the Welfare Reform Team for help. I’m now focusing my efforts on finding work and Family Works is helping me to undertake training to improve my chances.”

If you, a relative or a friend are struggling following the changes to benefits please do not feel alone, there are a number of organisations who can help. Please see below for some useful contacts:

South Tyneside has a strong tradition of military service, from the First World War to more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are committed to recognising the sacrifices our service men and women make, and to helping with the pressures that service personnel and their families can face in adapting back to civilian life.

That is why South Tyneside Council signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant, showing its active support for serving personnel, veterans and their families. The Council works with local regiments and other organisations to provide the help ex-service people might need with things like getting a job, finding somewhere to live, and arranging a new school for your children. Ex-forces personnel are now given a high priority rating in the Council’s housing allocation system.

If you have served in the Armed Forces and need a helping hand getting back into civilian life, just call into any Council customer service centre, housing office or welfare rights centre, where staff can signpost you to the organisations that can help.

Smokers in South Tyneside are being encouraged to give their family and friends something to celebrate and start a new smokefree life for Stoptober.

Last year tens of thousands of people stopped during the nation’s biggest ever mass quit attempt in October and the aim is to do the same this year. Why don’t you think about quitting from 1 October, we have a range of online tools to support you as well as support from the local NHS.

People who stop smoking for 28 days are 5 times more likely to stay off tobacco

Amanda Healy, Director of Public Health for South Tyneside, said: “If you smoke there are many reasons to give quitting a go. You will feel better in yourself, lower your chances of a serious disease like heart disease or lung cancer, ease the worry of the people you love and have more money to spend.

“South Tyneside Council is backing Stoptober and is encouraging staff to quit with a range of initiatives that will take place throughout October.

“We know lots of smokers want to quit and Stoptober is a fantastic time to make this important decision. Stopping smoking is the single greatest thing you can do to improve your health. If you can take advantage of the support offered with the Stoptober campaign and stop smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to stay quit.”

Benefits of quitting include:

• Reducing the risk of a serious smoking related disease from middle age

• You’ll improve your general fitness

• You’ll save hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds for nicer things

• Your skin and teeth will improve

• You won’t smell of smoke

• If you smoke indoors, you’ll protect loved ones from poisonous smoke

over 160,000 people successfully quit after last year’s biggest mass participation stop smoking challenge ever. why not add to that number this Stoptober?

Quit for Stoptober

The Council took over responsibility for public health from 1 April 2013 and residents can look forward to improved health and wellbeing thanks to a range of initiatives that are taking place across the borough.

Looking after your health and wellbeingFormer local factory workers encourages others to quit as part of Stoptober

Former factory worker and taxi driver Bill Young, 70, from South Shields, is encouraging others to follow in his footsteps and quit smoking for Stoptober.

“I’d been smoking up to 15 roll-up cigarettes a day for around 55 years, before I quit smoking. Smoking had just become a normal part of my everyday life and when I used to work at the factory, I remember a group of us all nipping out for a break and a cigarette.

“One day, I just decided that I’d had enough of smoking. I was tired of going outside to have a cigarette on my own with no-one to socialise with. I threw everything that reminded me of smoking such as my rolling tin and lighters, straight into the bin and decided to visit my local stop smoking service for support. I was really determined to give up and the service helped to give me the advice I needed to stay smoke-free.

“Since quitting, I feel a lot better in myself, especially on a morning and find it easier to breathe when I first wake-up. The biggest change that I’ve seen since stopping smoking though is how much money I’ve saved. I’ve put away £20 each week since my quit date last November and I’ve been able to afford things such as a coach trip to Blackpool as well as some new clothes for myself, which has been fantastic and all down to not spending money on cigarettes.

“It’s also really nice not having to decorate the house as much as we used to, to cover the brown and yellow stains that were being left from all the smoke. My wife is really proud of me for quitting

smoking and even my youngest grand-daughter thinks I’m fantastic for not smoking, which is really nice to hear.

“I’d encourage anyone to quit smoking as part of Stoptober – quitting is a lot easier than you may think and it’s good to do it as part of a group.”

Bill Young who quit during Stopover last year

To quit, all you have to do is go to www.smokefree.nhs.uk for free support materials including a quitting pack, an online app (available free via Smartphone) a Smokefree facebook page and daily support messages.

NHS Stop Smoking team gears up for StoptoberThe NHS Stop Smoking team is gearing up for a busy Stoptober with lots of local people expected to call on the support of the service as they make the decision to quit.

The service has been working with local employers in the borough to offer free training on how workplaces can support their employees to kick the habit.

Many employers now have a designated member of staff, who will be able to signpost staff members who wish to quit into the Stop Smoking service through Stoptober and beyond.

The NHS Stop Smoking team, which offers support for Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside, is made up of service manager Jo Dickinson and mentors including Jen Brown and Gill Davis for South Tyneside.

Local people are able to access support to quit at their GP practices, pharmacies and community settings. A telephone hub operates 7 days per week, offering flexible access to the Stop Smoking Service and providing essential follow-up support to people.

Lung cancer campaign warns people in South Tyneside don’t ignore a persistent cough

Residents in the borough are being warned not to ignore a persistent cough

South Tyneside Council is supporting the NHS Be Clear on Cancer campaign to drive awareness of the signs and symptoms of lung cancer and to encourage people who have had a cough for three weeks or more to see their GP.

Lung cancer is currently England’s biggest cancer killer, causing around 28,000 deaths each year, with 10,196 cases in the North of England.

Those diagnosed at the earliest stage are five times more likely to survive lung cancer for at least five years than those diagnosed at a late stage.

Lung cancer is responsible for around a quarter of all cancer deaths. If you have a cough that has got worse or changes, suffer from chest infections, cough up blood, are breathless, feel more tired than usual for some time, lose weight for no obvious reason or have an ache or pain in your chest or shoulder that has lasted some time please make an appointment with your GP. Any of these symptoms could be a sign of lung cancer. Knowing the symptoms of lung cancer might just save your life, or the life of someone you love.

See your GP if you have any of the following symptoms:

• a cough that has got worse or changes

• suffer from chest infections

• cough up blood, are breathless

• feel more tired than usual for some time

• lose weight for no obvious reason

• an ache or pain in your chest or shoulder

The Be Clear on Cancer campaign helps raise awareness of lung cancer, however, more needs to be done for our survival rates to be as good as the best in Europe. If they were, it is estimated that around 1,300 deaths could be avoided each year.

Detecting lung cancer early and ensuring people get the best possible treatment is vital for better survival. For more information visit www.nhs.uk/lungcancer

South Tyneside Council is encouraging local people to talk about drink ahead of Alcohol Awareness Week 2013. Running from 18-24 November, people will be encouraged to talk about a whole range of drink-related topics – from recommended limits and health risks, to social problems and how alcohol is everywhere in society.

At the same time Balance, the North East Alcohol Office, will launch a campaign across the region to support Alcohol Awareness Week with the focus on the health risks associated with drinking above the recommended limits. Drinking too much is linked to over 60 different medical conditions, including strokes, heart disease and a range of cancers.

Colin Shevills, Director of Balance, said: “Fewer than one in ten people in South Tyneside are keeping check on how much alcohol they drink and less than half know what the maximum units are.

“The aim of the campaign is to get people thinking and talking about alcohol and in particular highlighting the potential health harms of drinking too much in both the short and long term.”

Alcohol Concern is the leading national charity working on alcohol issues. Their goal is to improve people’s lives through reducing the harm caused by alcohol. If you are concerned about your own or someone else’s drinking call Drinkline on 0800 917 8282.

Get your flu jabPeople who are at high risk from seasonal flu are being urged to protect themselves with a free vaccination which saves lives.

The annual flu vaccination campaign begins in October, but local GP practices are currently writing out to all eligible patients and carers to invite them for their jab.

You are advised to get the jab this winter if you:

• Are a pregnant woman

• Are aged over 65

• Have a long term health condition such as diabetes, asthma, a heart condition (this includes children with serious health problems)

• Have a weakened immune system

• Care for people in these ‘at risk’ groups

Over the next few years flu vaccinations will also start to be offered annually to all children aged 2-16 years. For this coming winter some pre-school children will be invited for vaccination by their GPs.

The flu vaccine changes every year to fight the latest strains of flu, so even if you had a jab last winter you need another one this year to stay flu safe.

If you consider yourself to be part of an ‘at risk’ group get in contact with your local GP in October and get yourself the seasonal jab for free.

See www.nhs.uk/flu for more details.

Reducing the number of local women smoking during pregnancy and increasing the number of mums who choose to breastfeed are some of the challenges Jane Harker is looking to tackle as part of her new role as Public Health Midwife.

Jane has 15 years experience working as a midwife and has recently been working with mums-to-be in the community.

Her new role forms part of South Tyneside Council’s pledge to engage with more pregnant women who are smokers and offer them support to quit. She will also be working with new mums and supporting them to breastfeed their babies.

Jane recently met with a local breastfeeding group who meet weekly at Horsley Hill Children’s Centre, Norham Avenue, South Shields along with Councillor Fay Cunningham, the Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing.

“It’s great to meet eager mums who are keen to spread the word about the benefits of breastfeeding,” said Jane.

“Some mothers do not find breastfeeding easy and knowing they have groups like this to come along to and get support is really important. I’m really looking forward to working with mums to encourage them to take up breastfeeding and show them just how beneficial mum’s milk is.”

The Council is working closely with local Children’s Centres and South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust to identify and support local health priorities throughout the borough.

For more information contact Jane on 0191 424 6441.

Bede’s World has been a hive of activity over the summer, with the opening of the new outdoor auditorium, investments in new ways to interpret the story of Bede and early Northumbria, the employment of 5 new apprentices, as well as a whole range of exciting and interactive events from have-a go-archery and chariot processions to visitors trying their hand at a stone carving and dressing up.

In July, Paralympic gold medal winner Josef Craig MBE and Cllr Ernest Gibson, Mayor of South Tyneside, officially opened the new 150 seat outdoor auditorium. Created as part of the ‘Animating the Visitor Experience’ Project, funded through a £300,000 Heritage Lottery grant, the auditorium will be used for a wide variety performances including live music and theatre. The project also included the

construction of a child sized version of their Anglo-Saxon Thirlings Hall and will see a new interpretation of the story of Bede and early Northumbria through cutting-edge, digital media using QR codes and mobile phone technology allowing visitors to immerse themselves into the lives of Bede, Northumbrian kings and saints.

Live music and performancesThe new outdoor auditorium has already hosted a number of events including ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Durham’, written by South Tyneside’s own Ed Waugh, which had the audience laughing for nearly 2 hours.

Meanwhile, Jarrow Hall and the museum provided an intimate setting to showcase a range of beautiful music and angelic voices. Audiences enjoyed North East musicians Greg Pullen and Andy Jackson performing the Durham Viol manuscript, Kat Davidson with

traditional Northumbrian folk music and Bridie Jackson and the Arbour, voted Best Emerging Talent at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, with their beautiful and haunting harmonies.

5 new cultural apprentices for Bede’s WorldIn July, Bede’s World welcomed 5 passionate and enthusiastic cultural apprentices to the team who will learn skills in culture and heritage venue operations and administration.

A car aimed at cracking down on irresponsible parking outside schools and other children’s centres can be seen on the roads across South Tyneside.

The vehicle – a white Ford Fiesta - is clearly marked with the CCTV logo, features a telescopic post and camera and carries the message “Protecting our Safe Routes to Schools”. It not only monitors the keep clear zones outside of schools, but also is used to enforce bus lane restrictions.

Using the latest technology in automatic number plate recognition and an infra red capable camera for low light situations, anyone who is filmed stopping in the keep clear zone will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) through the post.

Mrs Judith Merriman, Head Teacher of Whitburn Village Primary School, said:

“Whilst most parents do park sensibly we do have issues with some parents wanting to be as close to school as possible. This has resulted in some situations where accidents could have happened.

“I would urge parents to be more considerate to others and allow for a little extra walking time for a healthier start to the school day.”

The service is being provided and administered by the Council, with the

vehicle part funded by the Tyne and Wear ‘Go Smarter to School’ campaign. Anyone who has concerns about road safety outside schools can contact the Council’s Road Safety Team on 0191 424 7613.

During the summer, leading athletes from across Europe descended on South Tyneside to prepare for the first major athletics championships in the UK since London 2012.

Elite competitors from Great Britain, France, Poland, Spain, Greece, Italy and Germany as well as Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Norway and Turkey used Monkton Stadium’s track and jump facilities to train ahead of the European Athletics Team Championships held at Gateshead International Stadium in June.

Some of Britain’s top sports personalities, such as Steve Cram, Chris Cook and Hazel Robson, have also used Monkton Stadium’s training facilities to progress their careers over the years and hopefully the excellent facilities at Monkton Stadium will lead to the next generation of Great British athletes with many youngsters having been inspired by last summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR FOGHORN REQUIEMOn 22 June a unique and once in lifetime event took place at Souter Lighthouse. More than fifty ships and sixty-five musicians gathered along our coastline to perform the Foghorn Requiem together with the Souter Lighthouse foghorn itself. Foghorn Requiem was a celebration of the sound of the foghorn, and a gathering of people and ships coming together to listen to its majestic honk, one last time.

Conducted and controlled from afar, ships sounded their horns to a score taking into account landscape and the physical distance of sound. The composition, performed live to audiences on the coastal cliffs, was played across a space of several miles around Souter Lighthouse.

Artists Lise Autogena and Joshua Portway collaborated with composer Orlando Gough to create an event never tried before.

New technology allowed ships horns several miles offshore to play together in

time with musicians on shore from three of the finest brass bands in the North East: the Felling Band, the Westoe Band and the NASUWT Riverside Band.

Thousands of people, not only from the local area but further afield, travelled to the borough to experience the spectacle and it certainly put South Tyneside on the international map. The event received coverage in local, regional, national and international media, from newspapers to specialist publications and radio to TV.

mattersSouth Tyneside Homes’ newsletter - Housing Matters - has now been merged with South Tyneside Council’s newsletter to deliver cost efficiencies and savings. Key information and stories for South Tyneside Homes’ tenants are featured on pages 44-47.

Sprucing up our neighbourhoods

The three-year scheme, which received Government funding linked to the Decent Homes programme, has been led by the Council in partnership with South Tyneside Homes.

Among the twelve areas to benefit is the Byron Avenue community complex in Hebburn, where 70 older people’s bungalows received striking new fences featuring designs inspired by local landmarks and heritage.

The designs, created by local school children, depict Monkton Cokeworks, contemporary landmark the EcoCentre and the Davy safety lamp, which was tested at Hebburn Colliery in 1816.

From a children’s play area and a skate park to new decorative fencing inspired by local heritage, residents are enjoying a range of neighbourhood improvements as a major environmental programme nears completion.

Sprucing up our neighbourhoods

Resident Margaret Rowley said: “We are all pleased with the results – it looks like a well kept area now. The old walls were crumbling but this has made the area nicer and given people a boost.

“The Decent Homes work has made a real difference too, with new kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces.”

Residents of the Trinity Estate in South Shields have also given an enthusiastic thumbs-up to improvements, which include three giant stone sculptures and a new communal garden that is already

proving popular with residents.

“It’s really brought the community together,” said estate resident Billy Hobson. “The garden has really taken off and some people are there all day.”

Three streets in Whitburn saw their outdated garden fences replaced with new brick walls, topped with unique decorative fencing designed by local children with help from renowned South Tyneside artist Bob Olley.

Other areas to benefit from new fencing or walls include Biddick Hall, Horsley Hill and the Scotch and Woodbine

Estates. Landscaping and new garden paths were provided for the Parkway Estate, while Calf Close residents benefited from new front door canopies.

Other improvements include a children’s play area and ‘pocket parks’ in Monkton, and a skate park in Boldon Colliery.

The final project within the programme, which is installing new walls and fencing at Harton Moor, is now underway and will be completed early in 2014.

Changing PlacesOver the past three years, the Council and South Tyneside Homes have secured over £200m from the Government’s Decent Homes Programme, which also provided funding for environmental improvements in the same areas. No one knows an area’s needs better than the people who live there, and that is why the Council and South Tyneside Homes invited communities to choose their own priorities for the programme.

The money was shared between different neighbourhoods using Government figures to ensure that it was targeted at the most deprived areas, with some local forums choosing to provide extra support to the project.
