Ann Ponce, a portrait and landscape painter, and her daughter Maria Ponce, a commercial portrait and fashion photographer, have combined their talents on several occasions. In 2003 and 2004, they showed works about a trip to Mexico and the men in their lives. Then in 2009, they undertook a theme they know all too well—television.
Phil Ponce, husband of Ann and father to Maria, is the long-time host of WTTW’s Chicago Tonight. Anthony Ponce (a reporter for NBC 5) and Dan Ponce (formerly a reporter with ABC 7 and now pursuing a singing career with the a cappella group Straight No Chaser) are the sons and brothers to the Ponce women. Maria Ponce explains the inspiration for the theme of their latest collaboration: “My Dad and brothers are all on TV but that’s not how they really are. I thought wouldn’t it be cool to explore the other side of reporters?” Ann Ponce continues, “In our society, these are the faces of intelligence and beauty, but who are they when the set isn’t on?”
ON TV/OFF TV, their joint exhibit this past fall at Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago, included 30 black-and-white photographs by Maria Ponce and ten large-scale oil paintings by Ann Ponce. Chicago newscasters such as Linda Yu, Mark Suppelsa and Ginger Zee are featured in clean, informal, unadorned photographs contrasted with richly painted portraits highlighting reporters such as Robin Robinson, Warner Saunders and Kathy Brock.
Ann Ponce has been painting for over 30 years. She studied drawing and painting at Indiana University, then at Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Denver, where she also taught from 1976 to 1978. From 1988 to 1997 Ann taught portraiture, figure drawing and painting at the Evanston Art Center in Evanston, Illinois. Her work is in several public and private collections.
Maria Ponce graduated from Indiana University in 2002. Her work has taken her to Atlanta, Los Angeles, Paris and New York. She has returned to her roots in Chicago, where she has a studio in Ravenswood. She is currently dividing her time between Chicago and New York.
Pieces from the ON TV/OFF TV exhibit along with other recent works by Ann and Maria Ponce will be exhibited from June 13 through August 29. Come meet the artists on Sunday, June 13th, from 1-3pm. This exhibit has been organized with Aron Packer of Packer Schopf Gallery, Chicago.

The event held in the gallery at South Shore Arts in Munster was sold out with over 375 people attending a party to honor the King’s 75th. Elvis Tribute artist Jerome Marion won the crowd over with his fabulous voice and moves! Guests were able to browse the ELVIS Tribute Show, featuring rare photos from the CBS Archives, along with the wonderfully entertaining portraits of Elvis Tribute Artists from around the world by Patty Carroll. Everyone was treated to fun food and drinks, including some of Elvis’s favorites—fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches and mozzarella sticks.

For the past decade, South Shore Arts has been a consistent provider of educational arts programs in East Chicago thanks to funding from the Foundations of East Chicago. This year, South Shore Arts began three new programs funded by the Foundations in partnership with a variety of local nonprofit organizations. These new programs offer even more artistic and educational opportunities to East Chicago families.
An “Evening of Art” took place in February at Washington Elementary School, celebrating 8,000 works of art created by East Chicago children as a result of Project INSPIRE. Students and their families, along with teachers, administrators, support staff and community members, enjoyed viewing the art that covered the gymnasium and hallway walls. Special awards and certificates were presented to students and Principal Andrea Hogan spoke of the benefit of arts in the schools.
Project INSPIRE is an art and entrepreneurship program that takes place in the schools during the school day and after school at the community centers of East Chicago. Partners include South Shore Arts, East Chicago Arts Initiative, Junior Achievement of Chicago and United Neighborhood Organizations and are conducted at five East Chicago public elementary schools and St. Stanislaus School. With no art in the East Chicago public elementary schools, South Shore Arts and East Chicago Arts Initiative work together to develop lesson plans for classroom teachers to follow. Additionally, each class receives an art workshop from a South Shore Arts instructor. Junior Achievement also provides classes on financial literacy and entrepreneurial skills. After school programs at the neighborhood centers focus on our culturally rich community and completes the joint effort to bring enrichment to the children of East Chicago.
Youth PLUS is a project-based after school program held at Westside and Block Middle Schools and Central High School. In collaboration with Communities In Schools of East Chicago, South Shore Arts provides enrichment programs that not only include an artistic component, but also focus on language arts. The program is designed
to increase the graduation rate by reinforcing academic learning in an unconventional way. Programs such as the Comic Book Project and Techno Kid show students their potential and develop skills that might be used after graduation.
Also funded by the Foundations is the East Chicago Parent Community Academy. This program encourages families to attend free classes that address important issues facing parents today. Input from the community guides the curricula, and classes are available in two languages as needed. As a part of this program, South Shore Arts offers Making Memories—A Family Enrichment Program, the literature-based arts program that gives families an opportunity to spend quality time together as they experience five different art forms.
Together with our partners, and with the support of funders such as the Foundations of East Chicago, South Shore Arts continues to create and strengthen the connections between the socially and culturally diverse communities along the South Shore through youth outreach, quality arts instruction, exhibition and services. A special thank you to the Foundations of East Chicago for recognizing the importance of arts programming in the lives of East Chicago residents!

Cole Porter’s childhood piano, now in the Cole Porter Inn.
Join the Northwest Indiana Symphony for an evening of greatest hits by Indiana native son Cole Porter. One of the foremost American composer/songwriters, Porter is known for such classics as Night
and Day, Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love) and I’ve Got You Under My Skin. These and many others will be celebrated at the Symphony’s May 20th concert at the Star Plaza Theatre, featuring guest soloists Michelle Areyzaga, soprano; Rebecca Robinson, mezzo-soprano; Ryan Bradford, baritone; Robert Boldin, tenor; and the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus.
In preparation for the concert, Symphony music director Kirk Muspratt made a special trip to Porter’s birthplace in Peru, Indiana, to see the place where Porter acquired his love of music. With a population of approximately 13,000, Peru is located in north central Indiana, about two hours from Northwest Indiana. Maestro Muspratt was escorted around town by Porter’s third cousin, Joey Cole Kubesch as they visited the composer’s childhood home (now the Cole Porter Inn) and local museum.
“It was a really lovely town with a nice bonded feeling of community,” Muspratt said. “To visit his house, sit on his bed, see his childhood piano where he wrote some of his earliest songs and by talking to his cousins and people in the museum, I really came to understand where Cole came from and how the history of the family in Peru shaped him. He was a world-famous composer, a Broadway icon, but still a proud Indiana native son.”
Muspratt said that he admires Cole Porter for the fact that he was the “rare words and music guy. Both are exceptional and all his pieces are so different.” Cole Porter is one of the few composers to have written both the lyrics and the music for his songs. “Even Mozart had Da Ponte writing his libretto.”
Some of Muspratt’s favorite Cole Porter songs include Night and Day, I Get a Kick Out of You and his favorite, You’re the Top.
Come hear your favorites when the Symphony performs “A Cole Porter Celebration!” May 20 at 7:30pm at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville. Tickets are available by calling 219/836.0525, ext. 200, or visiting www.nisorchestra.org.

The Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Society (WANISS) hosted a fund-raising dinner and music event for the Symphony at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, on Friday, February 26, 2010. Celestial Dinner Music for the Harp and Flute by William Bolcom was the centerpiece of an evening of themed dining, music and candlelight. Kara Bershad, Principal Harpist, and Cynthia Fudala, Principal Flutist for the Symphony, presented this intriguing duet, which featured movements named for the courses of an elegant meal, such as Ambrosia on the Rocks with a Twist and Transfiguration by Chocolate. Special thanks to WANISS members Cindy Ault, Tresa Radermacher, Carolyn Ropa, and Sharon Gibson for their help in organizing this very special event, where WANISS president Tresa Radermacher presented Symphony development director Tricia Hernandez with a check for $15,000 in support of the Symphony and its concerts. Watch for more intimate evenings like this one in the future!
