November 16 joint meeting with SI Las Vegas Valley. Met Governor Vicki, Gov Elect Lane and DD Sarah

Stars, Dreams and Wishes, the theme of our 45th Biennial Convention, has a deeper meaning in Japan. Each year, since 755, Japan has celebrated the reunion of the lovers Orihime (Vega), the weaver star and patron of silk farming, and Hikoboshi (Altair), the cowherd star and agricultural messenger. The Milky Way separates the lovers who can only meet once a year. In Japan, their reunion is celebrated by Tanabata or Star Festival and occurs in July and August each year. People write their hopes and wishes on long colorful strips of paper, which create beautiful displays of multi-colored streamers. The festival is celebrated across Japan and in other cities such as Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Los Angeles, California. Soroptimists in our 21 countries and territories only have the opportunity to meet face-to-face every other year. Start making plans to join us for this exciting celebration in Yokohama, Japan, from July 30 to August 2. Be a part of our festival to celebrate our stars, explore our dreams and make wishes for the future. We promise you a colorful and inspirational event. Keep up to date with convention news and read five reasons to come to Yokohama. And please be sure to use hashtag #SIAConv2018 when sharing any convention news.

And a healthy, happy New Year!

Meet our Friendship Link: SI Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District , Northern England.

NEWS FROM THE NORTH OF ENGLAND Members of SI Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and District send warm greetings to Sister Soroptimists in

SI Greater Las Vegas. A great deal has been happening over the last few weeks and we would like to share some of our highlights. Our Safari Supper in August was such a success that we are thinking of making it an Annual event. It stands out as a great example of team work and the kind of friendship that money can't buy. Our members were so generous with their time, effort and imagination and went all out to make it a colourful spectacle. The seaside theme, - we face the North Sea - was hardly going to be Caribbean in climate but we had Hula dancers, pirates, beach belles, and all the enthusiasm to compensate for the lack of temperature. Three houses, three courses of wonderful Caribbean food and a

rum punch with quite a kick! The most important outcome being that together we raised good money for our causes. The Club is in the Region of Northern England. Our very successful ongoing work on the trafficking of women and girls includes lobbying and supporting the special Police Unit set up to rescue the women and catch and prosecute those responsible. This work is endorsed by the specialist officers involved and by Dame Vera Baird QC Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria. Vera has subsequently become a Soroptimist herself in nearby Newcastle. One of the most successful outcomes of our lobbying against trafficking in the fashion industry was the creation of the Global Blanket - a patchwork quit made specially by our members and with the help of two of our local politicians, was taken to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, London. We know how to get a good photo opportunity!

The Global Blanket is a visual petition and the target is to get one million signatures worldwide by 2019.

The Northern Region President asked all members in the Region to sign and decorate a five inch square . Each of the 12 clubs have done this and the blanket was presented to the Prime Minister on the UN Anti Slavery Day.

We are supporting the petition as we believe -

Human Trafficking must be stopped

Consumers have a huge collective voice and together we can make change happen

Exploitation of workers must be stopped

Ethical fashion should be promoted

As Soroptimists we fully support the UN Sustainable Goals and our voice at the UN is crucial -for making the world a safer and more equal place for women and girls

EMBRACES THE EMBRACING PROJECT

Alicia and I met the crochet club at Sunrise Library yesterday evening. It turns out the crochet club consists of adults and children of all ages coming together to be involved in the creative world of crocheting. There is one senior and her daughter in the picture who are experts when it comes to crocheting. Some are beginners and some are more advanced. We received 45 scarves for the Embracing Project. I was also given an opportunity to speak to the group about Soroptimist and emphasized the profound impact a handmade work of art would make these young teenage girls feel. LEAH

We our proud to partner with The Embracing

Project (TEP) to provide monthly classes for the

young teenage girls they serve. The November

program was on self care presented by SIGLV

Member Dawn Walker.

AN UPDATE FROM SIA PRESIDENT DAWN MARIE

Regarding board action related to the importance of branding by all members by using the SIA “S” Logo. Many members/club/regions expressed concern to the board about eliminating the almost 100 year old Soroptimist Lady logo. This is an excerpt from a letter sent to all SIA governors. “After looking at all sides of the issue, your SIA Board agreed not to rescind their motion made in January 2017 associated with agenda item 11.J. Your SIA board agreed to continue to clarify uses of the SIA “S” logo, adopted 13 years ago; uses of the SI “emblem”; use of “S” logo jewelry and SI “emblem” jewelry; and the need for brand-unity

across the SIA federation. · Use of the SIA “S” logo is authorized and encouraged on all club and region stationery, websites, bulletins, banners, flags, programs, educational materials, badges, decorations, and printed matter for region conferences, district meetings,

workshops and any other official SIA function. It is also permitted as a decoration on cakes or confections for official Soroptimist celebratory events. · Use of the SI “emblem” is authorized on pins and on materials originating from Soroptimist International (headquartered in Cambridge, United Kingdom), or prepared by Soroptimist members serving in positions at the Soroptimist International level.

· Use of SIA “S” logo jewelry is authorized alongside SI “emblem” jewelry. We hope members will commit to SIA’s greater branding goals by wearing “S” logo jewelry—especially in public.

In my mind, this is not an “us versus them” issue. It is a working together issue. Your Board agrees we are on a good course in strengthening our SIA brand. We need brand strength to be successful at achieving our big goal. We need to commit to helping our members understanding by embracing our brand unity; we are honoring and respecting our history and legacy, while also building our future upon it.” In Soroptimist unity,
