She has gone on a wonderful European vacation, with her husband, Don. I am looking forward to her great stories, and pictures! What I want to bring to the front of this month’s newsletter is an event that will be coming to Camarillo. The Relay for Life of Camarillo will be held on, October 2-3, 2010, Saturday, 10 am to Sunday, 10am. The place will be Adolfo Camarillo High School Track & Field Stadium, located at 4660 Mission Oaks Blvd., Camarillo, CA 93012. This event is for 24 hours and will be filled with people and activities . We all have been touched by this disease of cancer, either with ourselves, families, or friends. Our dear friends (our daughter’s in-laws) Dan & Brenda Thaxton, have been strong supporters of the Relay for Life of Camarillo for years. Dan lost his mother years ago to cancer. By the way, they are the main attraction at our Camarillo Christmas Parade. When they ask for support, we always try to give what we can. You already might know someone who is supporting this cause, and would like to help them. Please visit the web site www.relayforlife.org/camarilloca, this will take you right to Camarillo’s page. You will find the Thaxton’s name along with the others, and the teams too! You can donate right on line. All the information is right at your finger tips. If you want to see a inspiring video, http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=esdA6RMpm3I this will give you a idea what those 24 hours are about in our community of Camarillo. Sincerely, Chris Hinds Newsletter Editor Improving the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.”

Our August program meeting challenged 4 teams of new & seasoned members in a rousing game of “A Jolt of SOLT”! We learned more about Soroptimists throughout the world during the game and discov-ered new information for some and a refresher for others. Even some long-time members were stumped on a few of the questions. We are an im-portant link in a world-wide organization. With our Chamber of Commerce membership and connection with the Non-Profit Council, we have ac-cess to some great programs this year. We identified projects at our Service/Program meeting and will focus on those topics for speakers. Some of our favorite activities are ongoing: Relay for Life, Heart Walk, Avon Breast Cancer Walk, Food Share/Jehovah Jireh, Women In The Military. If you want to explore more on those subjects, let me know. Recent subjects presented; Project Sierra, Interface, Teen Dating Violence, Human Trafficking, Cinemag-ic, Women In Custody in VC Job Fair, Girls in Foster Care. New ideas are: Red Cross Emergency Services, Camarillo’s Got Talent, Many Mansions, Habitat for Humanity, Women’s Wellness, Hospice All suggestions are appreciated. If you have a con-nection for a speaker, call or email Susie at (805) 383-6807 or [email protected]

In Memory……. Bonnie Warrinton, a long time Soroptimist, died on August
17th, after a four –year battle with bone cancer. She received
numerous awards including being honored by Soroptimists Inter-
national of the Americas for work in “Human Rights & Status of
Women”.
She was always present for all of the region activities and con-
ferences. She attended our own “Chocolate Night”, and she
boasted it was the best fund raiser she had ever been to.
Betty Stoneking’s husband passed away on August 22, 2010.

who was involved in a horrible traffic accident. Here is an
update from her to Susan Peterson………….
Hi Susan - So good to see your message:) I am doing so
much better, especially since I had my last skull replace-
ment August 30th - hooray!! I am still learning (I need it!)
about speaking, reading, writing... all the normal stuff, but
nothing I'm worried about (reasons I practice this!). I am
starting my NeuroSkill therapies in Encino starting on
Monday. I truly appreciate the prayers and wonderful
thoughts helping me the past few months... it means so so
much - thanks to especially you, but your fantastic daugh-
ter (the awesome mom!), and the other Soroptimist la-
dies!!
Getting to know you – Featuring Chris Hinds - aka CRaglady Guest columnist Anne Howington
I had a chance to meet with Chris on Thursday, the 9th. She’s a relatively new member of our club and I’d been looking forward to getting to know her better. This was my opportunity. I’m pleased to share that meeting with you. The first thing I had to ask her was ―What does your email name - CRagLady - mean?‖ Her answer? ―California Rag (garment) Lady. Simple as that.‖ Q.: How did you come up with it? A.: It just came naturally to me and my husband, Craig. He’s been in the clothing industry FOREVER. As a rep (salesman), as a manufacturer - almost every facet of the business. He was working for Wrangler when we met.
That’s a story in itself. I was a teller in a bank, downtown L.A., and he was a customer. Came to my window one day, liked what he saw (from the counter up), and I’ve been ―cashing his checks‖ ever since. Q.: Tell me about your business. A.: It’s so involved. We do trade shows for the clothing industry. Our own trade shows, that is. We own a company that puts on the shows; everything from booking the vendors, booking the location, blocking out hotel and hospitality suites. And creating and sending out the show books, contacting and inviting the buyers, arranging special events, getting there early to oversee the setup and staying late to make sure nothing was overlooked.
I probably send and answer over 100 emails a day when there’s a show coming up – as one is in a week or so. Most shows run 2 to 3 days and we do them in San Diego, Palm Springs, and Arizona at least 3 times a year each. We do the Holiday/Cruise line – that’s what’s coming up. Then there’s the Spring season. Next thing you know it’s time for the fall shows, which, of course, these shows are done in March or April. The vendors are manufacturers and reps for women’s apparel, accessories, shoes and gift items. They all think that they’re the best (and of course they are) and many need special handling. And the buyers are from large chain stores down to sin-gle location mid-to-high-end specialty shops and they all know that they’re God’s gift to the vendor – and they’re right. No buyers – no vendors – no need for my company. We also rep some lines ourselves so there are shows we attend just as vendors. I said it’s involved. ;) As I mentioned, Craig’s been in the business for as long as I’ve known him. I’ve worked with him much/most of our married life. And we’ve had our own trade show for the past 4+ years, so I keep pretty busy. Q.: How much of your time do you spend “at work”? A.: You know, owning your own business, you’re ALWAYS at work. So, I guess ALL my waking hours are ―at work.‖ Q.: Do you have other employees? Or, is it just you and Craig? A.: My daughter, Jennifer, has worked with us in the past. Mostly part-time. But she and her family recently moved to Idaho so my daughter-in-law is going to try her hand at it. I think this should work out pretty well – I’m just not sure she knows what she’s getting into. It’s one thing to talk about the business. It’s another thing to deal with it ―for real.‖ Q.: How many kids do you have? I mean – I know they’re not “kids” but – you know what I mean. A.: Three. Robert—he is married to Melissa, with 3 boys. Then John, he just recently got married to Dona. And then there’s Jennifer the youngest. She and Greg have 2 girls, but as I said – they’re in Idaho now. Q.: You’ve really had your hands full. Tell me – have you had any special challenges in your life? A.: I have a hearing problem. I was born with it. My mother has it too, and so does my sister. But it hasn’t affected any of my children or grandchildren so I have to hope that the ―chain’s been broken.‖ I have to look at you when you’re talking. I lip-read so with what I can hear I manage pretty well. This was actually a benefit when I was in car sales. A common customer complaint was that the salesman never listened to them. Well, when I’m with a customer I’m REALLY focused on what they’re saying. The only downside was when we’d be taking a test-drive. I’d have to tell them to either save their questions OR stop the car so they could look at me while they talked. I never had a customer who didn’t co-operate, although sometimes they’d forget and I’d have to remind them.
Q.: Have you always lived in California? A.: Yes—my folks are from Nevada and Ohio, but I’m a SoCal gal. Q.: Tell me about your best vacation trip (so far). A.: I’d say the absolute best vacation we’ve taken has been to Maui. We’ve gone several times, but one special trip we were able to have the kids and grandkids with us and we had a wonderful time. Q.: If you could design your ultimate travel adventure – what does it look like? A.: You know what I’d love to do sometime? Go somewhere – maybe Bali – somewhere exotic with a tropical jungle with lots of plants and animals I’ve never seen in the wild. Q.: Any special reason? A.: Just because. Q.: Speaking of “just because” – you and I met because you joined Soroptimist. Is there any particular project you’d like to see our club get involved in? A.: Yes. I’m hoping we can start a project working with young women aging out of the foster care system. I’m not sure just what we could do as a club but it’s a subject dear to my heart and I’m actively looking for information and contacts. I’d like to pro-pose this to the club but I have to have more of a specific ―things we could do‖ to present to the members. Q.: Is there anything you’d like to understand better regarding the things we already do? A.: I’m still learning about the organization – but I’d like to get a better handle on what our focus and direction is. Right now the most enthusiasm seems to be for the packages for service-women. I’ve read about other things the club is involved in, but I haven’t been a member long enough to get my feet wet in them. Q.: Last question - If you were doing this interview (with a sister Soroptimist) – who would you like to “get to know better?” A.: Besides you? Actually, I’d like to get to know Monika this way. She has an intriguing accent and she’s so direct and intel-ligent. Yes, I hope I see Monika in this column one of these days, even if I have to put her there myself. ;-) Thank you, Chris

butions really add up.

Collect new or nearly-new books, current magazines, especially health & fitness, sporting equipment-balls, bats, mitts, nets,
dumbbells, yoga mats, music CD's, DVD movies, X Box, PS2 & 3 games and computer games.
