Spring into Action!Jeanette Jeffrey, Healthy Living Educator

Sunny days and skies of blue...spring is upon us! Fresh air and sunshine have the healingpower to refresh both mind and body. What a perfect time to stroll outside to appreciate new lifein bloom and to get our bodies moving. According to the Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines forAmericans, 2nd edition, healthy adults should strive to reach 150 - 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Broken down over 6 days (a day off for good measure) thatequals 25 - 50 minutes per day. The great news is, you can break up the time over the day;A quick 10-minute walk in the morning and another quick 15-minute walk in the evening gets youto your minimum target. The benefits of daily movement include a lower risk of:

all-cause mortalitycoronary heart diseasestrokehypertensiontype 2 diabetessome cancersanxietydepressionAlzheimer's disease and other dementias

Improvement in sleep, brain functioning and overall quality of life have also been attributedto 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Set your goal today to put a spring in your step!

Spring Shortcuts to Eating HealthyLaTasha Coleman

Project Leader/Nutrition Educator

Spring is a busy time of year for many parents. Children are enjoying the extra daylight hoursand many activities begin to take time in the evenings. It can be hard to find time to makehealthy meals. Don't worry -- we can help! Try these tips to make healthy meals easier thisspring.

1. Plan ahead. Take an hour or two to plan meals for the week. Create a grocery list fromthe meals that you are going to make. Visit FSNE's EatSmart website to find new recipes!

2. Keep it simple. Plan meals that do not take a lot of time to make or do not need a lot ofingredients. For example, a meal can be a meat, a fruit, and a veggie. Using beans alsoprovides protein and takes less time to prepare.

3. Use shortcuts to save time. Stock up on canned and frozen vegetables that are quickand easy to prepare in a short amount of time.

Page 4: Solutions in Your - University Of Maryland · Katelyn Bullock, two really fun Radio Spots were delivered by Olivia O'Donnell and Jaslene Whitaker, and Andrew Sybert did a great Poetry

4. Cook once, eat twice. When you do have time to cook, trymaking extra food that you can eat later on in the week. Forexample, if the recipes makes 2 servings, double the recipe tomake 4 servings and save for dinner another night. You canfreeze it, too!

5. Snack healthy. Place veggies like celery and carrots or fruitslike grapes and orange slices in plastic baggies to take withyou when you are running errands. These snacks are healthyand will help keep you full until you can eat at home instead ofspending money eating fast food.
