India, stand for the ban on Endosulfan at Stockholm – Solidarity

Kasargod: Indian government is taking a submissive approach towards Endosulfan, though the

global community is demanding ban on the pesticide due to its dangers, said Solidarity Youth

Movement state general secretary, P.I Noushad. He was inaugurating a protest convention,

jointly organized by the Solidarity Youth Movement and SIO in Kasargod city on April 25, the

anti-Endosulfan day in Kerala.

The deadly pesticide that killed over 200 people and made thousands bed-ridden in Kasargod

has been banned in Kerala following popular struggles. Karnataka also laid a ban on the lethal

pesticide. But in Punjab and other states, where the pesticide is still being sprayed in fields,

reports indicate that several health disorders have started to bud in, P.I Noushad said. An

overall ban is demanded on Endosulfan in the country under such a situation, he reiterated.

The POP review committee, which is part of the Stockholm Convention under the United

Nations, strongly recommends the ban on the pesticide based on scientific studies. In the

Stockholm Convention from April 25 to 29 in Geneva, the committee is expected to seek the

approval of member countries for the ban on the pesticide, PI Noushad explained. He blamed

the Indian government and the union minster for agriculture for yielding to the interests of

corporate companies to openly vote against the POP review committee’s findings in the

convention.

Solidarity marches into the Parliament demanding ban on

Endosulfan

New Delhi: Solidarity Youth Movement activists took a protest march into the Parliament

raising the demands to bring nationwide ban on Endosulfan and vote against the pesticide at

the Stockholm Convention. After the march, an appeal against Endosulfan with the signatures

of one lakh overseas Malayalis was submitted to the Prime Minister.

The protest march kicked off from Kerala House premises. Famous human right activist,

Professor A.K Ramakrishnan, Priya Pillai of Greenpeace, PM Salih, SIO all-Indian general

secretary, Ravi Agarwal, Director of Toxic, New Delhi, Akhlaq, APCR, Adv. Shakir Jameel of

Solidarity, Adhila Shuhaib, a Kasargod native and P.K Noufal, Delhi Malayali Solidarity spoke in

the occasion.

K.T Aneesudheen, Limsheer Ali, K Hilarudheen, Sahla, Shana, Rabiya and Naushaba gave

leadership for the march. Artist Javed visualized the misery of Endosulfan in a canvas and

signature collection took place in another canvas at Jantar Mantar as part of the protest rally.

After the march, Solidarity leaders submitted a plea from overseas Malayalis with almost one

lakh of signatures to the Prime Minister. Signatures against Endosulfan were collected by

Thanima Cultural Society from Malayalis in Saudi Arabia.

Solidarity in forefront to reach Endosulfan sufferers for NHRC

hearing

Kasargod: Solidarity activists worked illustriously to bring Endosulfan sufferers in front of NHRC

chairman Jus: K.G. Balakrishnan, who appeared for a hearing of Endosulfan victims in the

district. All facilities were laid by the Solidarity Youth Movement to transport Endosulfan

victims to the Collectorate as the District and Gram Panchayaths utterly failed to prepare

enough facilities.

Solidarity’s MediHelp Project’s ambulance and vehicles were used to transport Endosulfan

sufferers. Solidarity workers described the state of each Endosulfan sufferer to Mr. K.G

Balakrishnan. The NHRC chairman later extolled non-profit organizations including Solidarity

Youth Movement for serving Endosulfan sufferers.

K.K Basheer, State Secretary of the Solidarity requested NHRC chairman to push for blanket ban

of Endosulfan pesticide across country in plea delivered to the chairman. Solidarity further

wanted NHRC to stand for several essential facilities of Endosulfan victims. An extensive

rehabilitation project including special schools, rehabilitation centres and medical centres

should be launched. Proper compensation should be levied from Kerala Plantation Corporation,

which sprayed Endosulfan pesticide through air in Kasargod.

Broad facilities should be prepared to distribute state government’s relief projects for

Endosulfan sufferers, the movement requested. Solidarity offered complete cooperation to

execute such projects in the affected areas. V.P Ashraf, District President of Solidarity;

Endosulfan Victims Forum, an organisation set up under the auspices of the Solidarity Youth

Movement to advocate the needs of Endosulfan sufferers also submitted a plea to the NHRC

Chairman. The Forum wanted to ensure availability of identity cards to distribute state

assistances to all Endosulfan affected people in the area. Stringent steps should be taken not to

get undeserved people in the list for Kerala government’s projects, Forum leaders demanded.

Kasargod: A district leaders meet of Endosulfan Victims Forum urges the State government to

ensure transparency in

implementing its newly-announced rehabilitation package for Endosulfan sufferers.

Government should be able to bring

together all Endosulfan victims into the medical camps, called up to prepare list of the

package’s beneficiaries. The Forum should fight down any effort to take in undeserved people

in the list. Systematic methods should be accepted to

distribute the assistances, the Forum demanded. Ongoing rehabilitation program of the state

government in the area is not functioning properly, leaders of the Forum alleged.

A small number of sufferers are benefitting from the government’s rice for two rupees and

pension programs, two key projects under the government’s existing Endosulfan rehabilitation

package. The Forum also decided to file a plea to the National Human Right Commission citing

imbalances in the distribution of state assistances.

Endosulfan Issue: Solidarity to block new panel of study into

Endosulfan aftereffects

New Delhi: Demanding “India, Ban Endosulphan and Rehabilitate the victims” Solidarity Youth

Movement will hold a march to the Parliament on Wednesday, November 24th 2010 said

P.Mujeeburahman, State President of Solidarity youth movement here in a press conference.

Victims of Endosulphan aerial spraying in Kasargod District of Kerala, human rights activists and

students community of Delhi will join the march.

The march will start from Jantar Mantar at 3 pm. Prominent personalities like Medha Patkar,

Ajit Sahi, Prof AK Ramakrishnan (JNU), Dr SQR Ilyas (Member, Central Advisory Council, Jamaat

e Islami Hind), Shahnawas Ali Raihan (National Secretary, SIO of India), P Mujeeb Rahman

(President, Solidarity Youth Movement) and eminent political leaders from various parties will

address the march.

The hazardous and killer pesticide Endosulphan has been used widely in India while most of the

foreign countries have made a blanket ban over it. Aerial spraying of Endosulphan in cashew

plantations of Kasargod district of Kerala had resulted into a catastrophe in which 200 people

are already dead and more than 4000 are living as victims with severe health hazards.

The report submitted recently by National Institute of Occupational Health to the National

Human Rights Commission reveals the devastation inflicted upon the people in Kasargod

district by the use of Endosulphan. They have recommended that no chemical pesticide should

be used in Kasargod district. Even then, surprisingly, India refuted moves to ban Endosulphan

worldwide and boycotted the voting in protest in the POP review committee, he added.

The sale and use of this pesticide was banned in Kerala by High Court in 2003, by State

government in 2004 and by the central government in 2005. Over 12 commissions were set up

to study this menace. Time has come to ban Endosulphan completely all over India and to

rehabilitate comprehensively all its victims. Both State and Central Governments should show

determination in this regard.

Mr. Mujeeb said this march is being organised as part of Solidarity’s anti – Endosulphan

agitation. Earlier Solidarity had organised agitations in Kasargod district along with the victims.

The second phase of the agitation commenced with the handing over of the battle torch to the

victims of all affected villages. With this Parliament march Solidarity intends to take this

agitation to the national stage.

Apart from spearheading the agitations Solidarity has been implementing a comprehensive

rehabilitation project for the victims in 11 panchayats of Kasargod district. The project covers

various segments like medical treatment, housing, free rationing of food items, education,

employment and community development. The fast finishing project is estimated to cost

rupees one crore which was donated by philanthropists.

Devikiran, a sixth standard student and victim from Enmakaje grama panchayat, also spoke in

the press conference. Victims and their parents from Enmakaje and Badiyaduka grama

panchayats were also attended.

K.G Balakrishnan assures NRHC intervention for

Endosulfan compensation

New Delhi: Jus: K.G Balakrishnan, chairman of the National Human Right Commission (NHRC)

tells the Solidarity Youth Movement leaders that the Commission considers taking hearing from

all victims of Endosulfan’s aerial spraying in Kasargod. Mr. Balakrishnan was chatting with the

Solidarity leaders and Endosulfan victims, who visited him at his chamber in the Commission

office in New Delhi to register their complaints over Endosulfan.

NHRM will make immediate interventions to avail adequate compensations for Endosulfan

victims in Kerala, he assured. Mr. Balakrishnan received complaints from Solidarity leaders and

Endosulfan victims at the trail hall of NHRC, because the Commission has already registered a

natural case against the Endosulfan usage. Justice Balakrishnan, after going through the

complaints submitted by Solidarity leaders, conversed with the parents and relatives of

Endosulfan victims.

He required Solidarity leaders to avail address details of all Endosulfan affected people in

Kasargod district. Once those details are received, the Commission will immediately intervene

in the issue to fetch enough compensation for those hapless people.

Endosulfan: Solidarity team visits Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: A team of Solidarity Youth Movement leaders, Endosulfan victims and their relatives

visits Rahul Gandhi at his residence on Janpath 10 in New Delhi. Devi Kiran, Narayanan, Jeevan

Raj and Ajith Shaji, sufferers of Endosulfan spraying in Kasargod were dumbfounded to see the

young Indian leader shaking their hands and caressing them with very remorseful touches and

care. For a moment, they turned stuck and were unable to utter a single word in his big

presence.

Solidarity State President P. Mujeeb Rahman requested Rahul Gandhi to bring a blanket ban on

the lethal pesticide naitonawide. Amid the discussions, Rahul was observed to be enquiring his

private secretary regarding the issue. Rahul was told that the Union Agriculture Minister, who is

from Kerala, has submitted a letter to the Prime Minister demanding ban on Endosulfan. Rahul

assured Solidarity leaders that he would take proper steps after studying the issue deeply.

New Delhi: Well-known social activist Medha Patkar urges Solidarity Youth Movement not to

retreat from its struggles

against Endosulfan until the lethal pesticide is banned nationwide. She was talking after

inaugurating Solidarity’s protest march into the Parliament on 24, November, 2010. The Kerala

government that restricted use and sales of Endosulfan should also take steps to halt

production of the pesticide in the state, Medha said. The central government’s stand in

international conferences on Endosulfan was always in favorable for the pesticide’s

manufacturers like Excel and H.I.L. The government should set right its Endosulfan policy in

interests of earth, human beings and farmers, she said.

Kerala has not still prohibited Endosulfan manufacturing in it land. Banning sales and use of the

pesticide will not only

be sufficient, because what happens is that Endosulfan produced in the state is transported

into its neighboring states and returns to Kerala. Only prohibition of Endosulfan’s

manufacturing in the state will do ultimate justice for its victims in Kerala, Medha explained.

Medha offered support of the National Alliance of People’s Movement for the Solidarity Youth

Movement to broaden its fights against Endosulfan into a national stage.

Speaking to the gathering, Member of Parliament from Kasargod, P Karunakaran also

dismantled the need for another study into the aftereffects of Endosulfan in the district. The

issue has undergone several studies by expert panels, and there needs no further study to find

out its nasty consequences. Endosulfan-caused disasters in the district have been a point of

discussion in all international gatherings summoned up on Endosulfan cause, Karunakaran

added.

The Endosulfan issue is a best example to prove how corporate and governments come

together for selfish interests, said Prof: A.K Ramakrishnan, Jawaharlal University, New Delhi.

Addressing the meet, P Mujeeb Rahman, state President of the Solidarity welcomed the Kerala

government’s new compensation package for Endosulfan victims. However, the proposed

package is not adequate as far as the intensity of the crisis is concerned, he said. Mr. Mujeeb

further demanded the state government review the allegation that its last package was not

properly implemented among deserved victims of Endosulfan in the area.

K.V Thomas humiliated victims of Endosulfan

disaster – Solidarity

Kozhikode: Union Minister K.V Thomas’ statement backing Endosulfan pesticide is humiliating

the hapless victims of Endosulfan disaster in eleven Panchayaths in Kasargod district, states P

Mujeeb Rahman, State Head of the Solidarity Youth Movement. K.V Thomas earlier said that

Endosulfan did not have any adverse affects in Kasargod.

The minister could just have flipped through the National Human Right Commission’s 2002

report on the aftereffects of Endosulfan usage in the district before making such senseless

comments, Mr. Mujeeb Rahman said.

The report, which openly portrayed miseries of people in the district, was submitted to the

Central Government agency, National Institute of Occupational Health (N.I.O.H). In its report,

NHRC strongly recommended to cease further usages of Endosulfan in the area, where more

than 200 people died of the deadly pesticide and thousands slaved to critical chronic healthy

disorders. Even though, India accepted a favorable stand towards this highly poisonous

pesticide in a P.O.P Review Committee (POPRC) meeting. Indian delegates at the meeting

sternly backed Endosulfan notwithstanding all other major countries demanded worldwide ban

over the pesticide. Further, they boycotted a voting on the ban of Endosulfan.

Of now the minister’s remark comes in justification of India’s stand in the P.O.P Review

Committee, which humiliated India among world countries. Actually, it is a shame for Kerala as

such a statement came from a minister belonging to the State where its High Court, State

Government and the Union Government completely banned sales and usage of Endosulfan

through last several years.

Indeed it is clear that the minister’s Endosulfan backing comment came from his yielding to

Endosulfan manufacturer lobby. K.V Thomas should get ready to withdraw his statement and

apologize to thousands of Endosulfan victims in Kasargod. The Congress Party in Kerala should

reveal whether it also complies with the minister’s statement, Mujeeb Rahman enraged on.

Endosulfan ban: India’s stand is unfortunate – Solidarity

India’s favorable stand towards Endosulfan at the P.O.P Review Committee (POPRC) meeting

was unfortunate, stated K.K Basheer, State Secretary of the Solidarity Youth Movement. He was

talking after handing over key of the house Solidarity offered for one of the victims of

Endosulfan at Puthige Panchayath in Kasargod.

Indian delegates at the international meeting on Endosulfan could not find tears of thousands

of unlucky victims of Endosulfan’s 25-year long usage in plantations in the district, he said.

However it is relievable that the POPRC decided to move ahead with its procedures to ban

Endosulfan barring India’s positive stand. He hoped that India would correct its current stand at

the committee’s Stockholm convention next year.

Solidarity offered the house for Kuttymoolya from Mugu at Puthige Panchayath. The house was

realized in a short span of time when Solidarity workers extended their physical exertion along

with the money collected from well-wishers.

Ban Endosulfan effectively, demands Solidarity’s Workshop on

Endosulfan

Kasargod: Solidarity Youth Movement requests the Central and State governments to

effectively place a ban over Endosulfan pesticide. The suggestion was raised at a Workshop

conducted by the movement in Kasargod to discuss Endosulfan miseries. The function pointed

out that despite Kerala’s ban over Endosulfan existing, H.I.L, a public sector chemical firm still

produces the pesticide inside the State.

Endosulfan has already shown devastating effects in Kasargod, and so governments should take

up immediate steps not to repeat the situation anywhere else. State government should take

account of all Endosulfan victims while considering beneficiaries for its ‘Rice For 2 Rupees’

drive. Like wise procedure to determine beneficiaries for the ‘Rs.1000 Pension’ scheme should

be made fully transparent. The scheme should be accurately extended into all deserved people,

the Workshop suggested.

Endosulfan; children gather to protest

Kasargod: Hundreds of children from the Endosulfan-hit areas expressed their protest against

the stand of Union minister, finding no reason to ban Endosulfan despite the fact of whole a

region being badly effected with this deadly pesticide. The children hailed from Muliyar

Panchayath, one of the mostly effected areas with the use of Endosulfan. The children were

taking part in a study camp named, 'Varnolsavam' (festival of colour) conducted by the

Solidarity Youth Movement at Mundakkai GUP School in Mooladukkam as part of its Endosulfan

Rehabilitation Scheme.

While inaugurating the camp, Khalid Bellipady, President of Muliyar Gram-Panchayath asked

the children to move ahead in the path of education and learning, getting over all sorts of

worries caused by the Endosulfan.

Endosulfan victims vow not to be guinea pigs for another

study

Kasargod: In a Solidarity protest get together, Endosulfan victims here in Kasargod swear that

they will no longer turn guinea pigs for another study into the aftereffects of Endosulfan. No

any study teams will be permitted to enter the area for another awkward study, they coarsely

pledged.

Solidarity Youth Movement conducted the protest gathering in wake of the Government’s

recent decision to launch one more study about the Endosulfan’s already-proven lethal

consequences among people in Kasargod. The meet asked the Government whose interests it

wanted to secure without providing sufficient medical aids and rehabilitations for hapless

Endosulfan victims.

Ban Endosulfan: Solidarity heads a protest march to HIL

Eranakulam: Victims of Endosulfan disaster in Kasargod took a protest march to the Hindustan

Insecticides Limited (HIL) in Eloor, Ernakulam under the leadership of the Solidarity Youth

Movement. HIL, a government of India enterprise still produces Endosulfan despite the

pesticide is proven to be causing deadly aftereffects in Kasargod district of Kerala.

The protest march was held as part of Solidarity Kasargod district committee's anti-Endosulfan

campaign under the banner. "India: Ban the Endosulfan." State president of the movement, P

Mujeeb Rahman inaugurated the march, which set out from Manjummal Junction.

Fight against Endosulfan, which is proved highly poisonous both for nature and the humankind

should be reinforced, Mr. Mujeeb Rahman reminded the gathering. Struggle against Endosulfan

is, of course a combat to save the earth and lives on it. It is shameful that the Indian

government produces the deadly pesticide in its own companies well knowing that it is

terrifically harmful to the biodiversity of the earth, he added. Mujeeb Rahman urged the

necessity to prohibit the Endosulfan, which converted the lives of thousands of people in

Kasargod hell-like. He defied the government with the raising demand to ban the pesticide from

using further in the nation.

Solidarity launches a four-month campaign against endosulfan

Kasargod: Solidarity Youth Movement is to launch a four-month protest campaign against

endosulfan usage in Kasargod District from Feb. 1 to May 31. The campaign will trumpet

slogans like; ban endosulfan in India; levy compensation from endosulfan manufactures and

properly rehabilitate victims of the pesticide in the district.

The campaign is introduced in the wake of Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar's denial of

the need for a ban on endosulfan. And India's stand at the Persistent Organic Pollution Review

Committee held in Geneva, where India said 'yes' to endosulfan while 35 other participating

nations decided against it. It makes the way simple for endosulfan to India.

The campaign will also push Kerala government to avail its proposed rehabilitation packages to

the rightly needed people. As part of the campaign, various functions will be held all across the

district in participation of prominent personalities. On 3rd of March a district leaders' meet will

be conducted and P Mujeeb Rahman, State President of the Solidarity will inaugurate it. A

district worker's convention will follow on 6th of the month.

Solidarity Endosulfan rehabilitation project

Solidarity's Endosulphan rehabilitation project was launched on 8th March, 2008 at Kasargode

town. Jamaat e Islami Kerala Chief T Arif Ali inaugurated the project. MLAs, District Panchayat

Office bearers Municipal Office bearers and activists were also present in the function.

Solidarity decided to concentrate the first phase of the project for 50 lakhs in the badly

affected five villages, viz, Enmakaje, Kumbadaje, Muliyar, Kayyur-Cheemeni, and Pullur Periya.

A team of committed young activists and students under the leadership of a full time

coordinator is carrying out the rehabilitation activities. In all the five categories namely

treatment, housing, ration distribution, education and employment, remarkable portion of the

target is already achieved in a very short time span of less than one year. In all the five

panchayats free medical camps were conducted. Doctors from different streams of medicines

and paramedics were made available. Patients needing lasting medication are getting the

medicines at their doorsteps by the volunteers. Ten patients are getting special treatment Govt.

Ayurvedic Hospital in Kayyur Cheemeni. The organizers arranged an expert for massage on daily

wages in this hospital with co operation of hospital authorities. A remarkable achievement is

that of Mr Udayan who started walking after 18 years, following the treatment under the

project

Five out of 15 new houses are already handed over to the beneficiaries. Ten houses are in the

final lap of construction. Repairs of 13 houses are going on.

69 families of Enmakaje, 61 families of Kumbadaje, 57 families of Muliyar, 41 families of Kayyur

Cheemeni and 13 families of Pulloor Periya has been benefiting the food rationing from last

April onwards continuously.

All the selected students were given with educational requirements in the opening of academic

year. Two girls were admitted for Para medical courses. One student was admitted for

computer education and is now employed with it. All the students under the project and their

parents were also given educational counseling.

Four families of Kumbadaje and Muliyar were distributed with sewing machines, 3 persons of

Kumbadaje and Muliyar were aided for expanding their shops and 2 families were provided

with cattle.

The project is the realization of the dreams of a group of committed youth. For them it was not

a mere charity activity, rather it was a struggle through social service. These young companions

overpowered the red tapism of Govt.s, both left and right and proved that the service can only

be imparted from a spirit of non selfish motive. The 50 lacks project of the state Govt. rests in

eternal peace while a short spanned project of entire Kerala society reached sharp on the

target through the hand of activists of Solidarity Youth Movement.

Endosulfan: New Scientific probe is to shield the Plantation

Corporation

Kasargod: Government’s decision to post a scientific team to probe into the aftereffects of

Endosulfan usage, which was ceased ten years back, is an attempt to protect the Plantation

Corporation, alleged K.K Basheer, State Secretary of the Solidarity Youth Movement. The

pesticide that plunged thousands of families in Kasargod into tears should be totally banned in

the country and damages should be levied from Plantation Corporation, he demanded.

Mr. Basheer was talking after distributing a bendable artificial leg to Sruti, one of the victims of

Endosulfan calamity and daughter of Vaninagar resident Tharadas. Sruti, a tenth standard

student at the Vaninagar High School earlier underwent a surgery on her handicapped leg,

which was cut off by doctors. Sruti’s family has been included in Solidarity’s food ration project

in Kasargod.

The function was taken place at the Vaninagar High School, Padre. Dr: Y.S Mohan Kumar; school

headmaster Sathyanarayana Butt; V.P Ashraf Master, District President of the Solidarity and K.K

Ismail, convenor of Solidarity’s rehabilitation project spoke in the function. Muhammed

Vaninagar, Haneefa Pallikkara and Hameedali Master took part in the function.

House handed over under Endosulfan Scheme in Enmakaje

Kasargod: A new household constructed under the Solidarity Endosulfan Rehabilitation Scheme

at Maniyambara in Enmakaje, Kasargod has been handed over.

Pushpa Amekkala, president, Enmakaje Gram-Panchayath inaugurated the function of key-

handing-over of the house, which was offered by the Solidarity to a blind person, Abdullah, a

resident of Maniyambara.

K K Basheer, State Secretary of the Solidarity, presiding over the function said that from its

formation, Solidarity Youth Movement has well incorporated social service with social protest

campaigns. Second phase of the renowned rehabilitation scheme will finish by the end of this

year.

House handed over under Endosulfan Rehabilitation Scheme

Kasargod: As part of the Endosulfan Rehabilitation Scheme, a new house has been handed over

in Bellur Panchayath. The house was offered to Mr Krishnamaniyani, a blind. He received the

key from Mr P Mujeeb Rahman, State President of the Solidarity Youth Movement.

Speaking at function, Mujeeb Rahman said that along with the rehabilitation project, Solidarity

will come forward with strong protests for a complete ban on Endosulfan. K K Basheer, State

Secretary of the Solidarity stated that in a sequel to the last years' successful 50 lakh scheme,

Solidarity is to undertake various projects under a second phase that costs Rs 45 lakh.

Solidarity makes life for a victim of Endosulfan misery

Kasargod: Giving a little relief to Mr. Abdurahiman, a resident of Aalur in Muliyar

Panchayath and a typical victim of Endosulfan calamity, Solidarity Youth Movement offered a'

street shop' under the second phase of its mammoth Endosulfan Rehabilitation Scheme. Mr

Abdurahiman is a skin diseased in effect of Endosulfan, and was benefiting from the first phase

of Rehabilitation Scheme for medical treatment.

He was allotted the 'street shop' in the second phase. The shop has been presented to him in a

function held nearby the Gov. Higher Secondary School, Cherkkalam. P K Abubacker Nadvi,

District President of Jamat-e-Islami Hind, Kasargod who handed over the shop said it is in an

exemplary way that the Solidarity Youth Movment is working in the field of social service.

Collecting resources from common people, Solidarity is spending them on the deserved and

needy in a well constructive way, he added.

K K Basheer, State Secretary of the movement disclosed that second phase of the Rehabilitation

Scheme is primarily slated to exercise on availing medical treatment to the victims in eleven

Panchayaths severely living on in effect of the Endosulfan misery. K K Ismail, convenor of the

Rehabilitation Scheme presided over the function. Ashraf Bhayaar, Area Organiser of Jamat-e-

Islami Hind, Abdul Rahman Aalur, a journalist and TMC Siadali, District Secretary of sio spoke in

the occasion.

Learning to walk at 18

Udayan is learning to walk at 18 and the sight lights up his mother Shilaja’s face. She has

been under severe mental torment ever since her firstborn was born retarded. She lives in

Vaninagar colony in the endosulphan disaster hit Enmakaje panchayat of Kasaragod district.

Weeks long treatment and physiotherapy has helped him to start walking for the first time in

his life.

Shilaja gracefully acknowledges Solidarity Youth Movement’s helping hand and the love and

affection of hospital authorities. Aswini 17 and Asokan 12 are Shilaja’s other kids. Udayan is

suffering from cerebralplasmy and fits

Udayan’s treatment expenses are met by Solidarity Youth Movement as part of its

Endosalphan rehabilitation project. Projects worth 50 lakhs are being implemented in five

disaster hit panchayats. Already 40 lakhs has been spend.
