SIDR, AILA damaged embankments: saline water entered into those ponds

Often found, either saline or arsenic contaminated

People have to carry water from far away, even 2-3 km
Some families spend good amount of money for water

Core Problem: Coastal population of Bangladesh suffers from scarcity of drinking water

After any disaster, limited amount of drinking water from GoB and Aid Agencies

Facts and Figures 30 plants utilizing underground water (without
purification) 75 plants utilizing pond water (with purification) Over 1450 dispensers/outlets Provides 1.8 million liters of drinking water Benefitting around 800,000 people

Sustainability Management committees have been established:
UP, UZ, UNO, DPHE were involved committee members themselves are the part of
beneficiaries Ownership has been created
Beneficiaries pay small amount per month This money are being used for operation,
maintenance & servicing of the plants Caretakers have been appointed by the
management committees

Lessons Learnt
Have to install more such plants in coastal region Management committee is not proactive at all
areas Some areas people are less interested to pay Caretakers need to be supervised Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation is
required
