PV: WHAT IS IT? PV is short for “Photovoltaics,” a technology for generating electricity directly from the sun’s rays. The resulting power can be used to supply all or part of your businesses electrical needs. The most common PV systems (also called solar electric systems) are grid-tied, that is, joined to the local utility service in your building. This way, any surplus electricity you generate is returned to the utility company for credit. Most businesses can substantially reduce or even eliminate electric bills by installing grid-connected photovoltaic systems. Note that grid-connected PV systems do not provide backup during power outages. PV systems with battery backup are available for businesses that require emergency power. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER PV? PV systems produce clean, renewable electricity helping you to reduce your organization’s environmental footprint and protect your bottom line. Recent utility rate increases, coupled with state grants and federal tax laws, now make PV systems competitive as well as cost-effective. To learn about the tax credits and incentives available to commercial clients in your area, please contact your local Alterisoffice. HOW CAN I LEARN MORE? Your local Alterisoffice can help you determine if your business is suited for PV, and provide information about available incentives. If a solar solution seems right for you, a site analysis will be conducted and a proposal presented. To locate an Alterisoffice near you, visit us online at www.alterisinc.com or call 866-682-0514. HOW PV WORKS: 1 Sunlight striking the silicon cells of the PV modules causes electrons to move, generating electrical current. 2 An inverter changes the direct current (DC) from the modules into alternating current (AC) used by the building and the utility. 3 A net meter keeps track of how much electricity is used by your business and how much is sent to the utility. © 2009 Alteris/ All Rights Reserved Local offices in RI, MA, CT, VT, NH & NY Company Headquarters: 523 Danbury Road Wilton, CT 06897 Toll-Free: 866-682-0514 www.alterisinc.com SERVING THE NORTHEAST PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER SOLAR ELECTRICITY for Commercial Clients PHOTOVOLTAICS (PV):

HOW CAN I LEARN MORE?Your local Alteris™ office can help you determine if your business is suited for PV, and provide information about available incentives. IS MY PROPERTY SUITABLE FOR PV?Each solar site is unique. Commercial PV systems can be installed on flat roofs, sloped roofs, or ground mounted. They can also be mounted as awnings on the south side of the building or as overhangs over entries. Parking lots are also areas where PV can be installed. Using satellite imagery, an Alteris™ representative can make an initial determination of the viability of PV for your business. We can then conduct an on-site solar evaluation to further evaluate your site and generate a project proposal. WHAT WILL IT COST?Because each solar site is unique, system prices vary. State rebates and federal tax credits can dramatically reduce the cost by of installing a PV system. The price of the system depends upon a variety of factors, including the size of the system, components used, and difficulty of the installation. Once your site has been identified as a potential location for a PV system, Alteris™ will provide a proposal including design specifications, pricing, and applicable rebates and incentives you may qualify for.

HOW MUCH WILL I SAVE?A PV system will reduce or eliminate your electric bills, depending upon the system size and your electric usage. Businesses that install PV systems are protecting themselves from rising energy costs and reinforcing their environmental initiatives. An Alteris™ proposal will include specific projections for energy production, annual savings, and return on investment.

ARE THERE INCENTIVES OR TAX CREDITS?State and Federal Tax Credits and State or Utility rebates, grants or incentives can drastically reduce the cost of a PV system. Check with your local Alteris™ office to find out about assistance available in your area.

HOW CAN I LEARN MORE?Alteris™ maintains offices throughout the Northeast. Call us at 866-682-0514 to find your local Alteris™ office, or visit us online at www.alterisinc.com

DO I HAVE A GOOD SITE FOR PV?1 An ideal solar site is one that receives full sun most of the day throughout the year.

2 An ideal roof is approximately south-facing and in excellent condition (the modules may be there for three decades!)

3 An ideal ground site is open to the south with any trees distant from the

modules.
