The problem.• As Broadband technicians we have to check

every faulty line without any hi-fi line testers.• BSNL doesn`t own any such costly

SNR/Attenuation – ADSL testers for LL Copper Line.

• Presently we are relying only on the DSL lamp of the modem at subscribers office and if DSL is not steady then it is difficult to diagnosis.


• What if the SNR leakage happens at any other place between MDF and Sub Office, Our staff have only HMT or a telephone to check the line health (which is not reliable as noise need not be in audible form)

• A perfect line on telephone/HMT may have high attenuation.

So, we need a tool?

Our requirement is a simple modem like box with• SNR/Attenuation display any-time, any-where between MDF and Sub Office.•Which should be battery powered and handy.

•If we have such a tool we can connect it anywhere in the circuit.•We can observe the SNR leakage real-time.•We can save precious working hours of line staff.•So BSNL will have better Quality Of Service.

• Here I am proposing a simple way to make such a tool called SNoW (SNR Over WIFI) by yourself with locally available accessories• Make It Yourself.


Required Hardware Accessories

• ADSL Modem-W1 Type• Make : Syrma Technology

Pvt Ltd.



• 12V Battery as Power Supply for modem.

• A UPS Battery or WLL Battery would serve the purpose.

• Connect it with a power code.• Smaller-Lighter the better.

Software Required

• DSL information of a line is available in the Modem once the ADSL is UP

• Use TELNET to access the modem Command Line Interface(CLI)

• So many free telnet clients are available in the Google Playstore (You can develop one instead!)

• I picked an app called BktSnrSet from the playstore.(I just don’t want to reinvent the wheel)

• Though BktSnrSet is made for adjusting SNR value of a modem, we can customize and use it for our specific purpose.


Software Required : BktSnrSet1. Open Play Store

2. Search for : BktSnrSet

3. Press->

4. Open once it is installed

• Now connect the modem in the DSL line any where between the MDF and Sub office.

• And wait to get the DSL lamp steady.

• Connect the Phone to Modem`s WIFI Network.


• Press Set SNR Button• (Which will run the

commands wan adsl linedata far (upstream) and wan adsl linedata near (downstream)
