Advent is the season before Christmas during which Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus; however, Advent always finishes on Christmas Eve. If that falls on a Sunday, it is considered to be the fourth Sunday of Advent. The name Advent comes from the Latin word 'adventus' meaning arrival. This season of anticipation is one of my favorites in the liturgical year. Feeling the expressions of Peace, Love, Hope and Joy during this season feeds my soul. Thank you for those 29 of you who braved the weather on Tuesday, December 4 th , when we had our annual Christmas party at Macaroni Grill. Dinner options were numerous and all of the food was very good. Just observing the gentle roar of conversations going on in the room was fun. We interrupted that roar a couple of times for games and for Christmas Carols and all attendees had a terrific time. We’re all set to go again with our regular meetings after the holidays; however our first meeting of the year will be on the 1 st WEDNESDAY of the month, January 2 nd , because New Year’s Day falls on the 1 st Tuesday. Please make a note of that schedule change. I look forward to seeing you all throughout the Advent season and during our Christmas celebrations here at Our Lady of the Snows Church. Have a wonderful Advent, and a very Merry and blessed Christmas. God’s blessing be with all of you and your families. Love & Peace, Susann

Advent Season is Here In the Catholic Church, Advent is a period of preparation before Christmas extending over four Sundays. The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, "to come to," and refers to the coming of Christ. As during Lent, the Church signifies the penitential and preparatory nature of Advent by having priests wear purple vestments and omitting the Gloria ("Glory to God") during Mass. The only exception is on the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday, when priests can wear rose-colored vestments. This year, Lent began on Sunday, Dec. 2 and ends Sunday, Dec. 23. The best-known of all Advent symbols is the Advent wreath, a custom which originated among German Lutherans but was soon adopted by Catholics. Consisting of four candles (three purple and one pink) arranged in a circle with evergreen boughs (and often a fifth, white candle in the center), the Advent wreath corresponds to the four Sundays of Advent. The purple candles represent the penitential nature of the season, while the pink candle calls to mind the respite of Gaudete Sunday. The white candle, when used, represents Christmas. The chart below provides more information on the beautiful and symbolic Advent wreath.

Busy SWA Elves Build Beautiful Baskets

Ladies on the SWA Raffle Committee were busy as Santa’s elves on Monday, December 10 preparing baskets for the raffle at the upcoming Snows Parish Christmas Dinner Dance on Friday, December 14. Led by Chairwoman Sandy McClure, the ladies creatively assembled and wrapped many enticing baskets to sell at one of our most successful fundraisers of the year, if this year is anything like last year! Great job, ladies!

SWA Christmas Party was Merry and Bright! Our SWA Christmas Party was held on Tuesday, December 4 and was a jolly gathering with lots of warm fellowship. Although the weather outside was frightful, 29 undaunted ladies braved the snowy roads of Reno to gather at the Macaroni Grill, where we warmed ourselves by the welcoming fireplace and savored tasty Italian food. Gift cards were donated for Sister Carmen’s ministry and carols were sung . . . it was a superb start to the holiday season. You can use the first page from our Program below to figure out your Elf Name!
