Field-Tested Ways to Attract the Next Generation of New CustomersDr. Susan Hogan, Emory University, Atlanta, GA

As part of Today’s Garden Center’s 10% Project, market-ing expert Dr. Susan Hogan is working with Michigan State University’s Dr. Bridget Behe and editor Carol Miller to better understand how Gen X and Gen Y view gar-dening and what it will take to convert them into garden center customers. After their research revealed that young homeowners prefer shopping at mass merchants over garden centers, Dr. Hogan consulted with Atlanta-area independent garden centers on developing a marketing campaign that would appeal to homeowners under 45 years old. Dr. Hogan will report on not only what she and the research team learned, she and fellow research-er Carol Miller will moderate a discussion with the Atlan-ta retailers who tested the marketing campaigns. Miller will then moderate a live consultation between Dr. Hogan and attendees to create campaigns each participant can take back to his or her store.

Don’t miss this insightful session that may be the key to your future!

Carol Miller, EditorToday’s Garden CenterRetail Session Moderator

Today’s Garden Center Editor Carol Miller has a reputation as an advocate for the industry, most recently demonstrated by launching the 10% Project. Today’s Garden Center’s10% Project looks for ways it can help garden centers reach a profit of at least 10 percent. In 2012, it commissioned a university study to learn how price sensitive consumers are to plants, then recruited a mainstream visual merchandiser, who counts HMS Host and Victoria Secret among his clients, to makeover a plant yard to test how merchandising affects sales. In 2013 and 2014, the 10% Project has commissioned another university study, this time to learn how to lure the next generation of gardening customers into independent-ly owned garden centers.

Miller will moderate both retail sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The SNA Research Conference, which began in 1956, is held annually and is the country’s longest running woody ornamental research conference, and provides a forum for horticultural researchers to communicate relevant and recent research findings to the industry. Its origin cannot be traced to any one individual, but the roots were planted by several SNA board members that recognized the need to consolidate duplicate research programs throughout the region. From an informal effort of compiling papers gathered from several horticultural research centers and assembled and printed, this two-day Horticultural Research Conference is held annually and has become world-renowned for quality research.

Participants are the top horticultural research and educa-tional leaders from across the country. Hundreds of topics in thirteen categories are shared in presentations that run approximately seven minutes each. A printed agenda, available after July 1, and the conference format permits selection of research topics of special interest for those interested in attending. All industry members are invited to attend any and all sessions.

Research Categories Include:

Container Grown Plant ProductionEconomics and MarketingEngineering, Structures & Innovations EntomologyFloriculture Growth Regulators LandscapeField ProductionPathology Plant Breeding & EvaluationPropagationWater ManagementWeed Control

One unique feature of the conference is the Bryson L. James Student Research Competition, an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to present their latest research results, hone their communication skills and compete for cash awards. These students historically demonstrate strong academic and research ability and move forward in the industry to make outstanding contributions. The competition is named for Dr. Bryson L. James who served as director of research for the Southern Nursery Association, and served as coordinator of the conference and editor of the Annual Proceedings of the SNA Research Conference for nearly 50 years.

Research presented at the SNA Research Conference is published in the annual publication “SNA Research Conference Proceedings”. Proceedings from 1991 - 2012 are available on the SNA website (www.sna.org) with 2,872 titles comprised of 11,208 pages. Take a look... there’s lots of useful information!

No registration required to sit in on any or all presentations.
