Fumed silica and silanes AEROSIL®�fumed�silica�is�widely�used�to�control�the�rheology�of�liquid�paints�and�coatings.�In�addition�AEROSIL®�prevents�hard-settling�in�coating�systems�containing�color�pigments,�fillers�or�matting�agents�as�well�as�in�corrosion�protection�paints�based�on�zinc�dust�or�micaceous�iron�oxide.�AEROSIL®�fumed�silica�and�other�fumed�metal�oxides�such�as�AEROXIDE®�Alu�C,�a�fumed�aluminum�oxide,�provide�many�benefits�to�powder�coatings,�e.�g.�they�reduce�undesired�static�charge,�prevent�from�moisture�pick-up�and�thus�optimize�the�flow�behavior�of�the�powder�coat-ings.�In�tribopowders�AEROXIDE®�Alu�C�increases�the�positive�charge�during�the�application.�Furthermore,�AEROSIL®�fumed�metal�oxides�are�applied�to�a�broad�variety�of�coatings�systems�to�enhance�their�scratch�and�mar�resistance.

Synthetic waxesThe�VESTOWAX®�product�range�covers�a�series�of�synthetic�waxes��(polyethylene,�Fischer-Tropsch,�EVA�copolymer�and�modified�polypropylene�waxes)�with�a�broad�spectrum�of�applications.�VESTOWAX®�meets�specific�quality�requirements�and�ensures�an�optimum�profile�of�properties�of�the�respective�end�products:�in�printing�inks�VESTOWAX®�leads�to�increased�abrasion�resistance,�in�varnishes�the�products�improve�the�scratch�resistance�of�the�surface.

PigmentsOne�major�color�for�all�different�kinds�of�coatings�and�printing�ink�applications�is�black.�Evonik�produces�Carbon�Black�Pigments�in�specially�designed�reactors�under�strictly�controlled�conditions.�This�is�where�the�main�difference�lies�between�carbon�black�and�soot�from�a�home�fire�place�or�from�internal�combustion�engines.

Carbon�Black�Pigments�(PRINTEX®,�NEROX®,�Special�Black,�Colour�Black)�are�produced�throughout�the�world�in�seven�carbon�black�plants�and�Evonik�supplies�gas-,�furnace-,�and�lamp�blacks.�

In�the�gas�black�process,�a�hydrogen�containing�carrier�gas�is�pumped�over�hot�creosote�and�burned�incompletely�by�numer-ous�small�flames.�The�Carbon�Black�Pigments�produced�by�this�process�feature�excellent�fineness�and�a�very�narrow�particle�size�distri�bution.

In�the�furnace�black�process,�the�liquid�raw�material�is�fed�through�nozzles�into�a�flame�of�hot�air�and�natural�gas�and�degraded�by�thermal�oxidation�at�high�temperatures.�The�properties�of�the�Carbon�Black�Pigments�formed�can�be�controlled�by�quenching.�The�furnace�black�process�features�a�wide�range�of�variations�with�regard�to�the�raw�materials�used�and�the�properties�of�the�Carbon�Black�Pigments.

Carbon�Black�Pigments�obtained�by�the�lamp�black�process�are�unrivalled�for�some�fields�of�application.�Lamp�blacks�feature�large�primary�particle,�a�wide�primary�particle�distribution�and�hence�low�agglo�meration�and�high�tamped�densities.

All�Carbon�Black�Pigments�can�be�used�for�printing�and�coating�systems,�e.�g.�antistatic�coatings,�high�jet�OEM�and�refinish�coat-ings,�UV�protection�coatings�and�all�kinds�of�inks�like�e.�g.�packag-ing�and�UV�curing�inks.�

Our�sodium�aluminium�silicate�Sipernat®�820�A�adds�a�touch�of�class�to�dispersion�paints�by�increasing�whiteness�and�dry�cover-age,�while�improving�resistance�to�weather�exposure�and�greatly�facilitating�application.�It�even�partially�replaces�white�pigments�in�solvent-based�lacquers�without�decreasing�coverage.�The�slight�level�of�thixotropy�achieved�makes�the�paint�spread�more�easily�on�application�and�prevents�it�from�running�on�vertical�surfaces.�Furthermore�it�is�appreciated�as�a�cost�effective�matting�agent�in�silk�gloss�paints.

ACEMATT®�matting�agents�from�Evonik�can�alter�the�surface�in�such�a�way�that�the�light�is�scattered�in�a�defined�fashion.�The�matting�agent�particle�stands�out�from�the�paint�invisible�to�the�human�eye.�Neither�the�color�of�the�paint�nor�the�base�(in�the�case�of�clear�coating)�is�changed�to�any�great�extent.�For�the�coat-ings�industry,�Evonik�offers�various�matting�agents�which�have�carried�the�trade�name�ACEMATT®�since�1995.�Fundamental�requirements�for�matting�agents�are:�ready�dispersibility,�good�suspension�behavior,�little�influence�on�rheological�properties�and�high�transparency�of�the�matted�coatings.�Evonik�offers�thermal�silica,�untreated�and�surface-treated�precipitated�silica�for�various�applications.

Silicone-based ResinsSilicone-based�binders�are�a�product�range�on�their�own.�These�products�embrace�the�brands�SILIKOPHEN®,�SILIKOPON®�and�SILIKOFTAL®.

SILIKOPHEN®�resins�provide�corrosion�protection�up�to�650�°C,�whereas�the�SILIKOFTAL®�resins�combine�heat�stability��and�flexibility�for�cook�and�bakeware�applications.�The�SILIKOPON®�grades�are�the�basis�for�isocyanate-free�2pack�air-drying�anti-corrosion�coatings.

The�co-binders�TEGO®�Protect�provide�anti-graffiti�and�easy-to-clean�properties�in�polyurethane�coatings.�

Specialty ResinsThis�product�group�embraces�a�variety�of�highly�sophisticated�resins�that�are�com-monly�used�as�cobinders�in�coatings,�inks�and�pigment�concentrates.�These�resins�are�based�on�different�technologies,�such�as�special�polyester�resins,�ketone�alde-hyde�resins�as�well�as�polyurethane�resins.�Among�other�things�the�products�improve�adhesion,�flow�behavior�and�other�film�properties.�

The�ketone�aldehyde�resins,�e.�g.�TEGO®�VariPlus�SK�improve�hardness,�adhesion�to�several�different�substrates�and�drying�and�are�non-saponifiable�and�lightfast.�Because�of�their�good�pigment-wetting�properties,�pigment�loading�capacity�is�increased�so�that�even�at�high�pigmentation�an�excel-lent�gloss�can�still�be�obtained.�For�univer-sal�pigment�concentrates�TEGO®�VariPlus�UC�is�highly�recommended.�This�resin�features�nearly�universal�solubility�and�compatibility.

With�the�ketone�aldehyde�resin�TEGO®�VariPlus�TC�and�theaqueous�PU-disper-sion�TEGO®�VariPlus�DS�50,�pigment�concentrates�can�be�created�which�are�compatible�with�a�number�of�different�binders.�TEGO®�VariPlus�TC�is�suitable�for�solventborne,�TEGO®�VariPlus�DS�50�for�waterborne�formulations.�The�combina-tion�of�TEGO®�VariPlus�TC�with�TEGO®�Dispers�710�achieves�the�highest�level�of�color�strength.�

TEGO®�AddBond�LTH�and�LTW�are�designed�for�a�number�of�coating�systems.�These�supplementary�resins�are�applied�in�order�to�improve�the�long-term�adhesion�of�different�coatings.�An�improvement�in�adhesion�can�be�achieved�to�several�metal-lic�and�and�plastic�substrates.�At�the�same�time�better�flexibility�can�be�obtained�even�at�low�temperatures.
