For those who may have missed it, ZL2HAM's ViewProp is now available free in a public beta test. Before you

yawn and dismiss ViewProp as just another propagation program, hear me out. This thing is

different!

All the propagation prediction programs we are used to - IONCAP, VOACAP and their cousins - are based on

historical understanding of propagation. They make predictions based on solar parameters and their authors quite

honestly explain that their results are monthly averages, rather than predictions that reflect what you can expect

today or tomorrow.

ViewProp is something new. It bases its reporting on what is happening today, on paths between your QTH and

locations of interest around the world. It does this by drawing on the Reverse Beacon Network's array of hundreds

of Skimmers worldwide to keep track of what is being spotted by Skimmers in your vicinity, as well as what stations

in your vicinity are being spotted anywhere else. The result is a dynamic portrait of propagation from your QTH to

and from wherever in the world, which bands are open and how well.

Yasme Foundation Supports ViewProp Developer

07/26/2013 The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation has announced that it has

made a grant to support further development of ViewProp, a new utility for propagation

visualization developed by Rick Kiessig, ZL2HAM.

ViewProp integrates information from the Reverse Beacon Network (RBN) and

worldwide spotting networks with station location information from QRZ.com and

mapping through DXAtlas. The result is a real-time, worldwide view of Amateur Radio

signals and operation,” the Yasme Foundation said in a news release.

ViewProp also supports a “playback” function to review historical data and provides users

with numerous options to configure both the input data stream as well as the way the

information is displayed. The software currently is in beta testing by a global user’s group.

The Yasme grant will enable ZL2HAM to complete development with appropriate networked

software tools and release it for public use. The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit

corporation organized to conduct scientific and educational projects related to Amateur Radio,

including DXing and the introduction and promotion of Amateur Radio in developing countries.
