>>> Welcome to the first Manama issue of Sur la Terre! A luxury lifestyle magazine hailing from Geneva, Sur La Terre is an international magazine with editions in cities all over the world. Each quarter we offer you an issue packed with international content, the best of the Middle East and plenty of local colour to vibrantly expose the city we’re living in.

Our new emblem for Manama Sur La Terre also adds an Arabic fingerprint to an issue reflecting opulence, yet with beautiful authentic local character: a modern approach to the traditional Arabic typeface to make us proud of the luxury that our city has to offer. Luxury is becoming more and more an integral part of our everyday lives and is not limited anymore to products, but to services too. We all want to know what’s best and where to get it, and this is what the Sur la Terre team is dedicated to bring to you in every issue.

From the absolute height of luxury: yachts that are used for business, pleasure and everything in between; to things we aspire to and dream about, such as Harry Winston’s magical way with diamonds. The Geneva Motor Show is also synonymous with luxury, and with the Lotus Elise that ‘drives’ underwater, to the haute couture Bugatti Veyron accessorised by Hermes, the future of luxury vehicles has never looked so exciting. Certain travelers look for luxury concepts that are inspired and individualised, and we feature four of the best from Corsica, Morocco and France, not to mention a hidden gem from the region – Alexandria, which is once again claiming its place on the world stage as a luxury destination.

As Manama edges more and more into the worlds spotlight, we also highlight the latest in exclusive trends, luxury products, services and fashion, and exciting new launches – all available to you locally.

The Sur la Terre you’ve all been waiting for is here and ready to take you through the heat of summer and out the other side. Enjoy!

ALEXANDRIA The Pearl of the Mediterranean

Alexandria was once one of the greatest cities in the world. In ancient times it was second only to Rome and was considered a centre of culture and learning. In the last 800 years Alexandria slowly sank into obscurity, however today it is once again claiming its place on the world stage as a luxury tourism destination. Boasting a picturesque coastline, stunning weather and a plethora of historical sites, Alexandria is the perfect weekend retreat for those wanting to soak up some culture and sun in style.

>>> I arrived in Alexandria on a cool spring morning. The roads were a buzz with commuters and a few horse and carts from the surrounding farmland. Built on the Nile Delta, the city was decorated by greenery and there was a cool, clean breeze blowing in off the Mediterranean Sea.

Narrow streets cut through blocks of towering apartment buildings crowding the foreshore. Founded by Alexandria the Great in 331BC and known as the ‘Pearl of the Mediterranean’, today the city is home to over four million people. The resulting construction boom has pushed the city along more than 30 kilometres of coastline creating a vibrant and picturesque cityscape.

We arrived at the Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano and were immediately transported into a world of luxury located right in the heart of the city. The hotel is built within an apartment complex visible along Alexandria’s entire coastline. It’s an impressive structure exuding comfort and style, and the perfect base to explore the city from.

I took a walk along the Corniche, overlooking the stunning Mediterranean Sea, to breath some fresh ocean air. It was a public holiday and the beaches were already teaming with people sheltered beneath colourful umbrellas, and the seaside café’s were packed full of people enjoying the sea breeze, shisha, and local fare.

First stop were the Montazah Royal Gardens, located in the east of the city. The large area of palm trees and flowers is a favourite picnic spot for locals and includes two palaces built by the Royal Family in the late

1800’s. The more attractive of the two, built in the Turkish Florentine style, was fully restored and is now the summer residential palace for the President.

Both the gardens and palace shone in the bright morning light, however it was Alexandria’s ancient treasures I was truly interested in.

The Roman Amphitheatre dates back to 200AD and is a wonderful example of Alexandria’s unique character. Some archaeologists were trying to find Alexander the Great’s grave and instead dug up an intact Roman Amphitheatre.

structure is built to symbolise the rising sun and makes the most of natural light to illuminate its vast 70,000 square metre interior.

As the shadows became long we headed back to the Four Seasons to relax after a busy day of sightseeing. The streets of Alexandria can be hectic and it was a welcome relief to enter back into the hotel’s calm and opulent atmosphere. I indulged in a spa treatment to ease out the stress of the day before dining at Byblos, one of the hotel’s premiere restaurants. Byblos’s intricate wood panelled interior was handcrafted and painted in Syria, and the Middle Eastern style chandeliers were also hand-made in Turkey and worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The décor perfectly complimented the fine Lebanese cuisine served in many courses providing a whole night’s entertainment.

Following dinner I enjoyed apple shisha on the Blue Bar’s outdoor balcony overlooking the coastline. Alexandria bustled away below in all her vibrant charm, and I couldn’t help but think about all the people who had walked her streets before me.

Alexander the Great and his army, Pharaohs including the doomed Cleopatra, Greek philosophers, Roman Soldiers, Persian Kings, Arab conquerors, and countless traders making their way to and from Europe via the Middle and Far East, have all left their footprints on Alexandria’s soil. It’s an intriguing city with many stories to tell, and many layers of history to explore. Or simply the perfect beachside getaway to enjoy a weekend of luxury beside the Mediterranean’s sparkling azure waters.

My guide Tamer, a native Alexandrian, told me stories about locals digging up rare relics in their back yards, or pulling up gold coins and other artefacts in their fishing nets. Such treasures were on display around the amphitheatre. In 1992 a team of underwater archaeologists discovered more than 2400 such artefacts strewn around the harbour floor and managed to bring some of the smaller pieces to the surface. It’s believed the submerged ruins are remnants of the last Egyptian Dynasty’s royal city, where Cleopatra VII, the last queen of ancient Egypt, ruled and died.

I experienced a thrill running my fingers over 2000-year-old hieroglyphics carved into granite monuments that have defied time. The city’s next chapter in history and my next destination was the intimidating Arab Fortress of Quaitbay, built in 1477. The Fort’s heavy stone walls provided a cool retreat from the midday heat and the best view in town from the upper levels. It’s believed to be built on the remains of the great lighthouse of Alexandria, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World before it was destroyed by a series of earthquakes.

We enjoyed a gourmet seafood lunch at the Greek Club overlooking Alexandria’s colourful harbour before heading to our final destination for the day, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Latin for ‘Library of Alexandria’). In ancient days Alexandria was home to the greatest library on earth, tragically destroyed by fire. UNESCO and the Egyptian Government recently established the new library, which aims to recapture the spirit of Alexandria’s original ancient library. The impressive contemporary

>>> Over the centuries the art of the Middle East has developed a visual language that continuously inspires some of the famous names in art, yet for decades our finest artists have felt the need to move to major art centers in Europe and America to have their work seen and appreciated. As new museums and galleries open across the region, there has never been a more important time to establish a new center for art commerce in Doha in order to convey Qatar’s artistic message to the rest of the world.

The Waqif Art Center aims to preserve and enhance both Qatari and Middle Eastern

Waqif art CenterThe reconstruction of Souq Waqif started in 2004 under the guidance and supervision of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar. The reconstruction process began after a prolonged study of the traditional Qatari use of materials and architectural techniques as well as aerial photographs taken of the area in the 40’s and 50’s. In addition to these photos, official records, and stories told by the people who lived, worked at and frequented the old site, were used as a guide for the restoration program.

artistic traditions, bringing together those who love art and culture and opening channels and doors to local and international artists to stimulate their thoughts and share knowledge and ideas, talent and inspiration. A cultural destination, the Waqif Art Center will contribute to making a new cultural and creative hub in Doha, with its involvement in the most up-to-date, contemporary art culture without compromising the aesthetics of tradition and heritage inherent to the location. With an open attitude and the spirit to experiment with exhibition methods, the Waqif Art Center want to show art from “here and now”.

It is the first private owned Gallery of its kind in Qatar, comprising of art galleries, a corporate art consultancy, framing, fashion, design and an antique store, art supplies and handicrafts, as well as two cafes which are due to open after the summer.

The Opening Ceremony was held on 24th May, 2008, and the Event was launched under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of the Qatar Museums Authority Board of Trustees.

Waqif Art Center is proud to initiate its activities with OPEN YOUR EYES, an exhibition ofGulf Women Artists.

OPEN YOUR EYES, sponsored by HSBC, examines an important moment in the history of a region that has been going through extraordinary socio-economic development. This show is about how the women artists of the Arabian Gulf address the issue of keeping their cultural identity amidst the rapid change. The works selected for this exhibition show that contemporary creation and traditional culture do cross each other at certain points. In a globalized world that promotes uniformity, art is perhaps the last hope to retain cultural individuality.

Bernard Richards Manufacture, renowned for creating the finest luxury performance watches for men, is proud to launch its new women’s watch. Surprised by how well his men’s watches faired with women last summer in Monaco, Bernard Richards was driven to create a special BRM piece for women. Richards wanted to create a very special piece emblematic of the “real woman”; modern, sexy, strong and confident. BRM combines both the strongest and most delicate materials found on earth. The watch is made of polished

stainless steel, and the dial is made of mother of pearl and diamond ornaments. Boasting an automatic movement and a 38h power reserve, the watch is 100m water resistant and encased in unbreakable sapphire glass.

The watch is completely finished by hand and then beautifully cut into the shape of a heart. BRM has created a timepiece for women, which truly combines the superlatives of technology and elegance. Bernard Richards introduced this model in Baselworld 2008.

The VILLEMONT group has recently made the news for its merger with Norway’s only timekeeper brand AMUNDSEN, which has a fascinating heritage. This merger will be launched with models which celebrate the brand’s distinction by means of an intelligent fusion of modern and urban, crafted with smart and innovative technology, consolidating its position in the high-end market niche. Mankind has always been drawn to the exploration of new lands and going beyond its own limits. Building on its philosophy of the exploration of time, VILLEMONT is this year focusing on new areas of investigation:• Technical exploration with the ASTON T NIGHT HAWK ®• Geographical exploration with the SOLAR NAVIGATOR ® AMUNDSEN

Throughout the entire process of exploration, VILLEMONT reaffirms its position as an artisan watchmaker. Each timekeeper is fully designed, assembled and decorated in Switzerland by the most experienced craftsmen in their field.

The Arabian Gulf. For centuries, it has been a source of trade, of sustenance, and of treasures pulled from her depths by traditional Qatari pearl divers. Now, the sea is bringing a whole new set of gifts to Qatar: luxury yachts from the world’s leading yacht builders! Italian brands like Azimut and Atlantis, British names like Sunseeker, and a host of offerings from American yacht builders – Doha has found itself with a bounty of riches to choose from.

The waters surrounding Qatar were once the domain simply to cargo vessels, fishermen, and the occasional jet-skiers or wakeboarding fans. Nowadays, many members of Doha’s power elite can be seen out on the water, soaking up the sun and the beautiful views of the ever-changing skyline, the outlines of their sleek yachts every bit as elegant and luxurious as the cars they choose to drive.

With the development of The Ritz-Carlton and the Four Seasons Marinas, as well as the pending launches of many more first-class marinas at The Pearl and Lusail developments, Doha has begun to see a paradigm shift occurring in its waters as of late. New luxury brands are appearing everywhere you turn. Other Italian brands are here as well, along with numerous American and British marques thrown into the mix, and the yachting elite in Doha agree that this is a very good thing indeed!

As one prominent local businessman told me “Look, anyone can get the newest flash car off the showroom floor, financing makes it easy – buying a yacht takes real money.” I have to admit,

he made a good point. When one considers that the price of a new Azimut yacht can start at 3,000,000 QR, and go over 40,000,000 QR+ for the largest versions, and that financing a yacht is usually not an option for a buyer, the simple act of owning one speaks volumes about your

level of success and financial achievements, without ever saying a word.

As Doha has continued its explosive growth towards becoming an industry leader – not just in the Gulf, but on the world stage – more and

sur la terreunique rides 15

Page 18: SLT1Manama(June08)

more business leaders are beginning to see that there is much more that goes along with yacht ownership today than would have ever been possible, or even imagined, 5 short years ago. Benefits, both in business and in a weekend-with-the-family sense, make the enormous expenses of yacht ownership more than worth the cost.

Private yachts worldwide have become the new de rigueur spot to entertain friends and important business relations – far from the commonplace hotel restaurants and night spots of the past, where an important but private business matter could soon become very public. Major corporate leaders understand that for true client impact (and discretion)

nothing beats a yacht. It is your office on the water, transportable to any major city in the world that has a port. This is especially true today, with the development of state-of-the-art communications equipment available to the modern yachtsman.

Especially now that the efficient processing of maritime visitors in local governments around the GCC and UAE is ever improving, and with the generally smooth waters of the Arabian Gulf to travel on, it is completely possible to have your Captain deliver the boat to one of Dubai’s many trendy marinas on a Wednesday, and to fly in on a Thursday afternoon to meet it there and enjoy it for the weekend before flying back home without the enormous paperwork nightmares that once took place – especially for Nationals.

Far beyond the business world however, is where the true nature of yachting unveils itself. Its nature can be found in the joy of exploring the waters around us with our families. To vacation in Oman is one thing – to have your yacht just offshore to provide your family and loved ones with a luxurious and safe scuba or fishing adventure is something else entirely – something much, much better.

16 sur la terreunique rides

Page 19: SLT1Manama(June08)

From the incredible diving sites around Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt, to the sparkling waters of a newly peaceful Beirut, to the excitement and fun of Bahrain during the F1 race, Qatar’s yachting elite get the best of it all – views of the cities they visit that no hotel can ever hope to match. Entrée into a community populated exclusively by the most wealthy and powerful individuals in the world. Opportunity to spend time with one’s family (or friends) outside of the ordinary circumstances of life – and into the extraordinary.

The gifts of the sea are many, and as a people, Qataris know better than almost anyone how precious those gifts are. The pearl trade may have slipped into the past, but the newest jewels from the sea are easy to spot. They are floating on the aquamarine waters off the coast of Doha every weekend – remarked upon by the families walking the Corniche, and stared at in awe (and a little envy) by those lucky enough to glimpse them as they cruise majestically past. They are the new generation of luxury yachts, and their new generation of elite owners. They are here to stay. And, like the skyline of Doha itself – they are a beautiful sight to behold, indeed.

harry Winston, a man in love with precious stonesA sequence of magical experiences, captivating stones and carats beyond belief, the dazzling jewels of the American jeweller Harry Winston have passed from the twentieth to the twenty-first century, furnishing magnificent necklaces for famous women from Jackie Kennedy via Elizabeth Taylor to Gwyneth Paltrow. In June 2008, at Christie’s London, the sale of the 38-carat pear-shaped Harry Winston diamond that belonged to Christina Onassis, and carries an estimate of three million euros, promises to be a major event. The fascination of the Harry Winston story remains undiminished – this legendary ruler of a world of diamonds has created an empire which is now quoted on the Stock Exchange.

OPPOSITE:The Wreath Necklace is one of the most celebrated icons of the House of Harry Winston. Inspired by a holly wreath, the necklace is composed of a cluster of round brilliant-cut, pear-shaped and marquise shaped diamond clusters, mounted in platinum. The design of this necklace exemplifies the Winston tradition of setting diamonds in a manner that shows off their fire and brilliance, making them appear virtually free from the setting. 128 diamonds, 117.03 carats.

>>> “Talk to me, Harry Winston, tell me all about it”, murmured Marilyn Monroe in the film “Gentlemen prefer Blondes”, a radiant presence in her role as a gold-digger. For more than a hundred years, the name Harry Winston has been associated with the world’s most beautiful stones and with the enchanting universe of first-class jewellery. But this entire realm of dreams and opulence is light years away from Winston’s unassuming beginnings in the profession. His father, who owned a little jewellery business in Los Angeles, was the first to be surprised when Harry, at the age of 12, bought a ring mounted with a stone for 0.25 dollars from a pawnshop window, cleaned it, and sold it for thirty-two times the price a couple of days later.

This talent for accurately assessing the quality of a stone, this sixth sense that enabled him to size up the chances of transforming an emerald or an uncut diamond, allowed him to bring into being a magical world of extraordinary creations throughout his life. But he could never have achieved anything without his unique self-confidence, a premonition of what he was destined to become, and a strong nerve that made him take major risks. With no more than 2000 dollars in his pocket, at twenty-four young Harry Winston set himself up in New York, where he founded his first diamond-dealing company. A charmer but also a visionary, he was able to persuade some bankers to finance the acquisition of family jewels bequeathed to heirs anxious to sell them just after the 1929 crisis. < Yellow sapphire Incredible ring surrounded

20 sur la terrebrand history

Armed with his “Who’s Who” and sheer cheek, he combed the New York elite solicitors’ and attorneys’ offices, distributing leaflets to advertise his services. Quite undaunted, he employed a retired judge with a respectable mop of white hair to offset his youthful appearance and reassure his astonished audience.

This hunt for heirs proved fruitful and allowed Harry Winston to pave the way for his business. In 1925, he paid a million dollars for the entire jewellery collection of Rebecca Darlington Stoddard and obtained a fat commission on its resale. A year later, he negotiated the purchase for 1,200,000 dollars of the jewellery collection of Arabella Huntington, the wife of the Californian railroad magnate Henry Huntington. Winston was fond of boasting that one of Arabella’s long pearl necklaces, after he had worked on it, now adorned the necks of at least a dozen women around the world.

Now financially independent, in 1932 he registered his previous “Premier Diamond Company” as “Harry Winston, Inc.”, and found it a home in the Rockefeller Center. His genius and innate flair very soon enabled him to acquire the most exquisite and impressive precious stones, whose names alone are the stuff dreams are made of: the Jonker (726 carats, with some of the gems it provided cut from the basic rough crystal by Harry Winston and sold to King Farouk of Egypt); the Hope (a sublime and intense 45.52-carat blue diamond); the Star of Sierra Leone (970 carats); the Nur-ul-Ain (“light of the eyes”, the world’s most important pink diamond, a 60-carat stone set in the tiara of Farah Diba when she became Empress of Iran on marrying the Shah); and the Briolette of India (a unique stone because of its 90.38-carat weight, but especially its size and shape, and named after a Maharajah’s gem collection). The histories of these stones are just as captivating as their brilliance, and at one time they all belonged to the same self-taught diamond specialist.

Harry Winston was an indefatigable globe-trotter who travelled all over the world in search of a unique stone. He had the ability to look at the rough crystal and realize immediately what he could make of it. Something that other people would think too risky he would see as an opportunity. In thrall to these ecstatic fragments and heavenly contours, he spent hours remounting and arranging gemstones in order to make them display their utmost brilliance and inventing almost invisible, fluid and three-dimensional settings, so that the stones would seem to flow from a woman’s throat and dissolve when she removed her necklace. These floating settings, ultimately light and complex, are typical of the jeweller’s exclusive products. “If I could, I would place diamonds directly onto a woman’s skin”, was a favourite saying of this diamond-lover whose vision has had a decisive effect on the jewellery industry. He was an avant-garde visionary too, who also decided to use big square-cut or pear-shaped solitaire diamonds in rings, and no longer confined them to the role of central element of a brooch or a

necklace. Inspired by nature and geometrical forms, he created his famous “wreath” circlet to imitate the shape of the Christmas garlands that he found before his door.

Unlike other top jewellers, Harry Winston did not actually design with his own hand the pieces that he foresaw in his imagination. In the nineteen-sixties and for forty years, his collaboration with the Indian creator-designer Shinde was an aesthetic success. The mixture of Indian inspiration, decorative opulence, and classical simplicity in Winston’s aesthetic gave rise to an extraordinary style that still inspires all the present-day creators. Unique pieces at several million dollars each, designed as works of art, were worn by Queen Elisabeth, Princess Diana, the Sultan of Brunei and, today, Oprah Winfrey or Gwyneth Paltrow.

He was daring enough not to wait for clients to turn up at his premises in New York, but had his representatives travel hither and thither about the world. The Genevan Albano Bochatay, whom

Winston took on in 1958 in order to develop European and Middle-Eastern markets, spent his life in aircraft and transported entire trunks of precious stones, which he would open up for display before Saudi princes and millionaires in the Philippines, Teheran or Caracas. As François Curiel, Chairman of Christie’s Europe, stresses, “this visionary, a pioneer marketing genius, had already been the first to understand that he had to concentrate on Europe and the Middle East as well. He was the first to think of organizing exhibitions in the most luxurious European hotels in order to persuade his clients ‘to spend a few million on jewels between two skiing lessons or diving twice in the pool’ (P. Assouline)”. In 1955 he opened his showroom in Geneva, and then one in Paris in 1957.

An incomparable businessman, Harry Winston knew how to deal with his most pampered clients. Serge Fradkoff, one of his closest co-workers, tells how in the nineteen-fifties a Saudi monarch was staying in Geneva and wanted the famous jeweller to be there in

person to show him three diamond bracelets before he left at first light the next morning. The imperturbable Harry Winston immediately booked a private plane in New York, then in Paris, and turned up at the hotel in person at six o’clock in the morning, not with eight but with three hundred bracelets. Flattered, and therefore in a very good mood, the Saudi King examined them all, bought a considerable number of them, and even ordered 25 others.

No one could ignore his enthusiasm. He was trusted by the main buyers of gemstones throughout the world, following the example of the Duchess of Windsor, who was to become one of his prestigious clients. Her reliance on his judgement was vindicated at her estate auction sale in 1987 when the diamonds that she had bought from him in 1948 for 84,000 dollars were sold for 2.2 million dollars. Another famous name associated with the house of Winston was that of the fabulous Taylor-Burton 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond that was the actor Richard Burton’s love-gift to Elizabeth Taylor.

Nowadays the name Harry Winston possesses a unique aura which is also due to the legendary jeweller’s instinct for publicity and to his wish to ensure that the rest of the world would share his passionate interest. He had an unequalled sense for presentation and spectacular occasions. He re-assembled his most extraordinary gems for a travelling exhibition, including the 337-carat sapphire that had belonged to Catherine the Great, and showed this “Court of Jewels” to the whole world. In 1944, he was the first to lend jewels, to Jennifer Jones for the Hollywood Academy Awards evening. A few years later, Madonna (who would choose Harry Winston jewels for her wedding) and hundreds of film celebrities wore Winston jewels at top events and provided him with first-class publicity.

Many of Harry Winston’s initiatives have been carried on and extended by his eldest son Ronald. The house of Winston has placed more emphasis on its international aspect by turning towards Asia and maintaining its position. In 1998 Harry Winston opened a salon

in the Royal Hotel of Osaka, and since then a fifth salon in Japan in 2007. Devoted to the idea of maintaining the ethos of this family heritage, the brand inaugurated the Harry Winston Gallery in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, where the Hope Diamond, donated by Harry Winston to the American nation, is the key exhibit. The House of Harry Winston has increased the number of events that provide publicity for the brand. For its centenary, a tiara consisting of seven diamonds of exceptional colours and weighing 100 carats is shown.

In 1989 the House of HW took the risk of opening the world of Winston to a wider public by creating a collection of watches known as “The Ultimate Timepieces”. In 1994 a unique watch is created from Rhodium, then the first perpetual calendar timepiece is produced in 1995, and year on year, the OPUS adventure continues: developed with an independent watchmaker (FP Journe, F. Baumgartner, Greubel & Forsey, Frédéric Garinaud etc.) an exceptional creation since 2001, writes a new page in the

watch book. Harry Winston continues to amaze with the PROJECT Z (watches made from zalium), a revolutionary material, previously unknown in haute horlogerie, and most recently achievements of the brand were recognised in November 2007 at the Horlogerie Grand Prix in Geneva: the incredible Tourbillon Glissière received the prize for the most complicated watch. This era is also that of adapting to new laws governing competition in this sector. A sign of the times is the tendency for top jewellery families to sell to big groups. Cartier and Van Cleef are now in the Richemont group, and Boucheron has joined the Gucci group, while Chaumet has returned to the LVMH stable. In 2006, 100% of Harry Winston was sold to the Canadian diamond-mine company Aber.

The resulting giant enterprise, rebaptized the Harry Winston Diamond Corporation, is now quoted on the New York Stock Exchange. The quotation has proved successful in spite of the current financial crisis. The top-class jewellery sector remains an ultimate luxury market that never stops growing with the advent of new

Perla Lichi2. Your work and creative influence is in high demand from clients all around the world. What do you think has made you so successful?I think the number one thing that has made me successful is that when people meet me eye to eye, they quickly realize that my number one goal is not to impose my taste on them – but to take their taste and put it together skillfully and professionally to suit their lifestyle. I also have the ability to take my professional skills and experience and combine them spiritually – because I actually “feel” the design as I am doing it.

3. Is there a vast difference between what clients from different areas wordwide, such as

1. You are clearly an expert at and have an eye for design – what first inspired you to follow your passion to set up your own design company?I guess I’m going to have to say that this goes all the way back to my childhood when I remember having my own room and always wanting to “add things” to make it more special. For instance I would hang my dolls up to create a wall display. I instinctively wanted to embellish my own space to achieve my own look. From the youngest age I was always “doing things” to rooms. Now you have to realize that my mother wasn’t always so happy about this – but I truly think good design instinct was something that I was just born with.

the Middle East, Europe or the United States, are looking for in terms of design? There are some differences, but in the end they all want the same thing. And that is a comfortable, yet elegant and beautifully put together style that they can enjoy in health with their families. That is the bottom line.

4. What made you decide to branch out to the Middle East, and when did you first start working in the region? I started working in Middle East about three years ago. What really made me decide to expand my practice in this area of the world was when I discovered there was high demand for my style and quality. Another important

8. You are already a published author, having written three books on interior design. Do you have plans for more books in the future, and will they continue to follow your passion for interior design? Well, my third coffee table book, More Beautiful Rooms, is just now being released. And yes we do have plans for more books including one specifically on palaces. And yes, all the books will continue to be an expression of my passion for interior design.

9. You have recently branched out into designing fashion accessories, such as your trademark handbags. Was this something you had always wanted to do, and do you have any plans to expand into other areas, besides interiors and accessories, in the near future? To me design is art, and whether you are designing a palace or a handbag, it all comes from within. I’m probably going to design more accessories and handbags as a hobby because I do enjoy it – especially wearing them and seeing other people wearing them. But my ultimate passion is interior design because I know that people will be living in these spaces that I design and enjoying them every day of their lives.

10. You are a well-known spokesperson for professional interior design, and have received many awards and accolades, including being an honored member of Heritage Registry’s Who’s Who 2007-2008, and appointments to the Board of Directors of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and the Ajman University of Science and Technology in the UAE. Your talents are obviously highly in demand, and being a sought after business woman in today’s fast paced world must be exhilarating yet time consuming! How you manage to juggle the needs of your company, clients and other responsibilities while still maintaining time for yourself? One thing at a time. That’s all anyone can really do. And it is also important to enjoy every moment of each thing individually. That is what makes my life exciting. In order to be able to juggle all this you also need to have inner passion. It just comes to me and it would be difficult for me to explain to anyone in words. Something you just need to be in the moment to understand another person’s passion. Mine is interior design.

comparison to the totally customized and detailed palaces that I am now working on in the Emirates. It is possible some of these may become five-year projects because we like to be involved in the very beginning planning stages up to the last detail, just like DaVinci was involved when he first sketched the Mona Lisa to the time he put on the last finishing brushstroke.

7. Out of all the designs and homes you have created, do you have a personal favorite? Can you tell us a little about it, and why it is special to you?Yes, I can. That would be my own home. Because I designed it for me – to enjoy – based on my knowledge and my style preference. And the client was very easy to get along with! However, if you should ask the people for whom I have designed homes and I’m sure their answer would be the same.

consideration was that I immediately felt comfortable here because I realized that I could provide my clients with what they were looking for. I enjoy the culture, I like the people, I fit in and I understand my clients.

Our knowledge of different styles of design, and our ability to balance design with quality and also to personalize each person’s space are all important ingredients. I showed up with just the right design skills and abilities at a time when the Middle East was burgeoning in building and development and looking for new creative talent who could appreciate classic design and integrate new ideas.

5. Can you tell us some of the people you have designed for in the Middle East?I have designed homes for people from all walks of life – from the regular business person to the royal prince. In the end, however, our goal is always the same. And that is to provide good design and to find just the right balance for each person and meet everyone’s needs.

6. What is the biggest project that you have worked on, and how long did it take to complete?Well, the longest project that I have ever done was a 20,000 sq. ft. palace in the States for a VIP business person. He had very specific desires and wanted to recreate a Mediterranean villa on an oceanfront property. It took three years to complete. This project is now dwarfed in

which came directly from the artist’s studios, the exhibition traces Picasso’s career across a range of work, exploring distinct periods in his career. The first, from 1901-1909, is about the genesis of Cubism, from the Blue Period to the research around Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. The second period, from 1910-1924, covers the artist’s early cubist and neo-classical works. The third, 1924-1935, includes several surrealist sculptures and the main paintings of this influential period. The fourth, from 1935-1951, places some Picasso works in the context of his preoccupation with the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the Cold War, while the final period, 1947-1972, explores Picasso’s predominantly joyful post-war work.

An expansive programme of educational and public engagement initiatives has been organized to coincide with the exhibition. Designed for all age groups, the programme includes interactive activities, art workshops, illustrated lectures, guided exhibition tours, debates on Picasso and his artistic legacy, and a week-long ‘Picasso Art Club’ event. The exhibition itself includes an audiovisual room that uses film, photographic and audio

collateral from the Musée National Picasso’s incomparable Picasso Archives, while an audio guide gives visitors a rich and illuminating context for the artworks on view. The exhibition will also be supported by exhibition brochures in English and Arabic, as well as the publication of a special children’s Picasso journal. All of the materials have been written and published by the staff of the Musée National Picasso.

Abu Dhabi is the second city in a nine-nation tour of the exhibition, after the launch in Madrid’s Reina Sofía museum, and it is the only Middle Eastern venue on the tour. The UAE capital will present an exclusive exhibition differentiated by the inclusion of 40 drawings, prints and illuminated manuscripts reminiscent of the Arab influences Picasso absorbed during his youth in Málaga, La Cocina and Barcelona.

Picasso Abu Dhabi: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris will be open daily from 10am-10pm. Entry is free-of-charge with visitors asked to make a discretionary donation to the ‘Arts Abu Dhabi’ cultural education programme. presented by their makers at the Show. A handful of these newcomers claimed our entire attention, such as the ultra-exclusive Alfa Romeo 8C Spider, the spirited BMW M3 Cabriolet, or the astonishing submersible Rinspeed sQuba.

The new BMW X6 is a vehicle that is not afraid to push back the frontiers. It is an authentic synthesis of two worlds and combines the power and functionality of an SAV with a coupe’s sports elegance. In short, it brings together performance, versatility and the fluid lines of a harmonious aesthetic appearance.

Whether you are going to a concert or to the office, or setting off to discover new horizons and leaving everyday life far behind you, this entrancing combination of a coupe and a Sports Activity Vehicle can always be relied on to demonstrate its verve and distinction. Let the elegance of the new BMW X6 fire your enthusiasm and imagination, and experience the pleasure of unrestricted driving.

This new coupe shows its paces superbly as soon as the new V8 Twin Turbo engine behind

the BMW X6 xDrive50i transmits its power directly to the wheels. The least pressure on the accelerator will ensure that the instantaneous display of power allows you to appreciate the excellence of this high-performance engine. The three other versions, a six-cylinder petrol-injection model and two diesel six-cylinder models, also offer unforgettable performances. Of course the action of a sports calibre engine is the essential feature of the unique cocktail of dynamism and originality that makes the new BMW X6 so vitally attractive.

The new BMW X6 lets you tackle the most difficult bends with complete assurance. In addition to the intelligent xDrive four-wheel drive technology, it has the advantage of including – and this is a first – Dynamic Performance Control. This BMW innovation makes it more agile and enables it to manage

bends more dynamically. The DTC system distributes continuous engine power between the rear right and left wheels. In order to obtain the maximum thrust and stability, a higher engine torque is applied to the outside wheel when taking a bend. And so the new BMW X6 amply demonstrates its outstanding agility and stunning road holding. Moreover, the Dynamic Performance Control system makes sure that the vehicle responds more rapidly and more precisely to the driver’s commands. The result is that you experience totally exceptional driving pleasure everywhere, whatever the nature of the ground, because your real motive power is tranquil confidence.

The indisputable star of the Alfa Romeo stand was the 8C Spider, which was unanimously acclaimed by the motoring press. After the transparent eXasis in 2007, the far-out Swiss producer was once again able to make himself the focus of comment at this year’s Show by displaying a concept straight out of the James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me”. Based on a Lotus Elise, this vehicle’s main feature is actually its ability to move on land but also, and especially, underwater. Oxygen masks have been made available for passengers wishing to enjoy underwater trips free from any distress. The model’s technical versatility depends on three electric motors that propel this odd vehicle at 120 km/h on the roads (0 to 100 in 7.1 seconds). For sea trips, on the other hand, you will have to rest content with 6 km/h on water and 3 km/h in “submersible” mode. A fine way to appreciate the landscape. Since June, Maserati has added to its range by offering an S version of the splendid GranTurismo coupé. This sporting model is justified by using the sensitive V8 4.7-litre engine of the Alfa Romeo 8C with an effective 440bhp. Now it reaches 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, compared with 5.2 for the original model, and a maximum speed bordering on 300 km/h. Outside, the black-painted radiator, the 20” wheels, the round outlets and the red-barred trident are final distinguishing features of this virile version of the Italian coupé. It will be available from June, when the lucky owners will be able to appreciate the comfort of an interior of mixed Poltrona Frau leather and Alcantara.

The legendary British marque gave the first world presentation at Geneva of a Zagato-enhanced version of the Continental GT Speed. This model has been given a surprising two-tone paint finish, a redesigned chromium-decorated radiator, a rounded stern, and especially a double-boss roof, an authentic feature that betrays the Zagato touch. This Italian-accented British model retains the 12-cylinder engine and the 610bhp of the original version but acquires a exclusive leather trim signed Zagato.

The Gaydon producer exhibited the impressive V12 Vantage RS concept car at Geneva. Under its “Mako Blue” exterior, this truly ultra-powerful body-built version of the V8 Vantage coupé conceals an authentic competition engine capable of competition performances. Its 600bhp move this veritable racer from zero to 100 km/h in just four mini-seconds. For its part, the interior retains the sports image with its bucket seats trimmed in a harmonious mixture of carbon and Alcantara. Enthusiasts should be aware that this British bombshell could go into production in the first quarter of 2009.

As if to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the famous TT coupé, Audi arranged a European début at Geneva for an ultra-fiery version of the marque’s bestseller: the Audi TTS. The vehicle’s sporting nature can be appreciated at first sight: 18’’ aluminium wheels with five spokes, four exhaust outlets, an aluminium driving-mirror, prominent air intakes at the front and a far from negligible rear diffuser. This initial impression is confirmed by the 2.0-litre turbocharged, fuel-injected (TFSI) engine developing a maximum of no less than 272bhp. This is the most powerful version of the TT range and will be available from this summer as the 2+2 coupé and roadster.

The prestigious French manufacturer teamed up with the leather supplier Hermès to display an haute couture version of the Veyron at Geneva. There are no changes to report as far as the engine is concerned, since this top-class vehicle retains its monster W16 and outrageous 1001bhp. The innovations of this limited model are obviously to be found within the cabin, which has been equipped for the occasion by Hermès of Paris. Accordingly, the carbon and aluminium mixture of the standard version have given way to a bull-calf leatherwork trim with a much more refined effect. The boot has been given the same treatment and also accommodates a specially-adapted Hermès fabric and leather suitcase. The Hermès signature on wheels and radiator grille is a final unique touch for this special edition.

Mercedes caused a sensation by presenting the AMG versions of its new SL roadster. The British house presented an exclusive version of its XKR coupé at Geneva. This model was decorated with an “ultimate black” and was primarily distinguished by its 20’’ Vortex alloy wheels and a bodywork finish enhancing the aerodynamic effect of the whole vehicle. The V8 4.2 litres and the 420bhp of the basic model are still up-to-the-minute, but a modification of the speed limiter enables the XKR-S to take on 30 km/h in order to aim at 280 km/h. The access of power is mitigated by braking strength brakes reinforced with 400 mm diameter brakes in front and 350 mm diameter brakes at the back. The interior ambiance retains a sporting touch with leather-trimmed bucket seats and black-lacquered wood work that perfectly suits the wild-cat fur. Music lovers will appreciate the Bowers & Wilkins integrated audio system comprising a powerful 525 W amplifier and kevlar speakers. Limited to 200 units, and intended exclusively for the European market, this little bombshell will be available some time in summer 2008.

As usual, Lamborghini took the opportunity afforded by the Geneva Motor Show to present a revised version of one of its flagship models. This year the honour was accorded to the Gallardo, with an LP 560-4 with thoroughbred lines and stunning power. The front bumper and the characteristic air intakes are clearly inspired

by the highly Lamborghini Reventon, while the rear benefits from a rehandling with a diffuser superbly integrating the four exhaust outlets. This super-sporting model’s performances are far from trivial with a reworked V10 reaching 560bhp and moving from zero to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.

Founded in 1969, Azza Fahmy Jewellery (AFJ) originally started as a result of Azza Fahmy’s great passion for design and a desire to translate this passion into jewellery collections of her own. The first woman to enter a typically male dominated trade, she decided to apprentice herself in Khan El Khalili, the epicenter of the jewellery craft in the heart of Cairo.

Today, Azza Fahmy’s vision has been realized – she has become the first Arab woman to achieve an international reputation in jewellery design. Successfully transforming the concept of jewellery making from a craft to an art, she has changed the concept of jewellery wearing among Egyptian and Arab women with her modern interpretation of traditional Middle Eastern design and incorporating elements of Arabic calligraphy into her contemporary jewellery. The exclusivity of her designs has put her in a class of her own, and has turned

her work in to valuable art adorned by world leaders, royalty, style icons and connoisseurs of jewellery all over the world. Listed as one of Egypt’s influential women, she travels internationally as a cultural ambassador for her country, and has held more than 200 exhibitions worldwide. Azza Fahmy’s jewellery is available at an exclusive Azza Fahmy store located at the Boulevard at Emirates Towers, as well as at Azal in Al A’ali Mall Bahrain.

Jeweller-extraordinaire Neil Lane’s baubles are a favourite in Hollywood, and now his designs are available in the Middle East. Recently sprinkled all over the red carpet for Hollywood’s biggest, most anticipated and most celebrated night, the Oscars, Neil Lane’s star shone brighter than any other. Neil Lane is available in the UAE at Azal, Emirates Towers Boulevard, and in Bahrain at Azal Al A’Ali Mall.

“Guarded, developed and optimised, the character is the only distinguishing element for a man, making him interesting, attractive, different both in his heart and in his mind; it characterises in a unique and original way everyone’s individuality” Franco Pianegonda

says. In this mood Franco Pianegonda creates his man collection: design, innovation, avant-garde and most of all character animate and distinguish the Character collection jewels. Keen on experimentation and original combination, Franco Pianegonda proposes jewels that unite silver brightness to gold, “black and white” diamonds and smoke-grey quartz brilliance and to onyx luminosity. Gourmette chains, round links and square plates surround bas-relief silver roses, exalting the perfect union between strength and sweetness, energy and sensitivity; two complementary characteristics every man should be able to combine to live nowadays. Franco Pianegonda has also reinterpreted his Glitter collection. Characterised by well-proportioned interlacements of gold and

precious stones, Glitter jewels change into bright creations, rays of light that mark eternal beauty bringing out the most intense light and enhancing the splendour of the stones. Pavé diamonds, sapphires and rubies that underline the volume of these creations characterised by an audacious and never predictable combination of colours, forms and dimensions, reflecting the elegance and fashion style typical of Pianegonda collections. New creations represent a perpetual beauty that underlines the delicacy of these jewels devoted to a sensual and involving femininity.Pianegonda is available at Azal stores throughout the UAE, at Emirates Towers Boulevard, Souk Madinat Jumeirah and Grosvenor House Hotel, and in Bahrain at Al A’ali Mall.

Internationally recognized, award-winning designer Judith Ripka has been designing jewellery for over 25 years, inspiring those who appreciate style, design and uncompromising quality. Judith Ripka’s jewellery collections reflect her passion for design, exuding modern elegance and sophistication. This season the Judith Ripka collections focus on an exquisite new colour palette. Unusual coloured diamonds and sapphires in blue, champagne and yellow,

Judith Ripkaadd to the drama of her oversized cocktail rings, bold pendants and statement necklaces. From rich textures to her distinctive matte finish, every creation incorporates signature features that make them unmistakably Judith Ripka. LuxuryWatchmakingGuy ElliaWhen the great watchmaking tradition encounters a futuristic design, we enter into a new era, that of luxury watchmaking in the 21st century. The Tourbillon Magistère Titanium unites the most legendary complication and the most avant-garde case in a remarkable collector timepiece. Guy Ellia makes its mark in the exclusive world of luxury watchmaking by presenting a tourbillon with mysterious winding. This exceptional escapement, created over two centuries ago by Abraham-Louis Breguet to compensate the detrimental effects of gravity on the proper functioning of a watch, is a masterpiece of technical prowess and precision. Built on the foundation of a Christophe Claret mechanical hand-wound calibre, the movement – which displays hours and minutes in the centre and the tourbillon cage at 6 o’clock – has been completely skeletonised for

optimum lightness. All its components have been pared down to the bare essentials, the tourbillon cage – which makes one revolution every minute and seems to float weightlessly – weighs less than one gram. Light for the eyes and light to the wrist. The bi-convex case (43.5 x 36 x 10.9mm), bottom plate and bridges are made of titanium.

A great premier, something totally original, a new experience in the world of timepieces. To the immense joy of collectors, the Tourbillon Magistère Titanium can be admired from all angles in total transparency, through the sapphire crystal glass or case back. The Time Square Tourbillon Magistère Titanium, mysterious ambassador of Guy Ellia, is water resistant to 30 metres, mounted on an alligator leather strap with a white gold folding clasp and boasts a diamond cabochon on the winding button.

In homage to the brand’s growing success, BRM has created its first Tourbillon. With a 51.5mm diameter, BRM has engineered the largest tourbillon cage in the market. This special piece upholds BRM’s reputation as a designer of exceptional timepieces. The aesthetic quality of the BRM Tourbillon is transparently designed to showcase the sophistication of its movement. Being the most difficult mechanism to engineer in the watch industry, BRM has developed a Tourbillon

which rotates at a rate of 1.5 times per minute for unparalleled precision of movement as opposed to the standard Tourbillon rate of 1 rotation per minute. To ensure flawless mechanics and movement, the Tourbillon is held secure by 3 carbon fibre triangles and 3 shock absorbers using a registered isolastic system. BRM introduced the Tourbillon to the public at Baselworld 2008 and also shared some breakthrough concepts in the watchmaking industry during the fair.

We live at a time of highly-sophisticated luxury facilities, when travel agencies vie with one another to offer ingeniously-displayed top-of-the-range services to a select clientele notable for their lack of any financial ceiling. Some people who are also looking for highly-refined forms of presentation focus on concepts that are more domesticated yet inspired and individualized, in the sense that there are places to stay where design and decoration supply that essential extra touch of feeling. Here are four examples of this current trend.

Thyme, stone and sandYou might easily believe that all the secrets of the lovely island of Corsica have been revealed and explored, for there are so many exceptional locations dotted along its varied coast-line and decorating its hinterland. But then you would never have known one little corner of paradise tucked away between mountain and salt sea, in the south-eastern area of the island. The vast Murtoli estate covers two thousand hectares of countryside, fringed by ten kilometres of little inlets and a white sandy beach. This is a dream of beauty set with the jewels of ten houses, most of which date back to the sixteenth century, age-old patrician dwellings or typical dry-stone sheepfolds, fully restored by a Corsican deeply enamoured of his native land. The scents of wild grasses, the sound of insects, the sight of birds of prey overhead searching for young rabbits, and the gentle noise of water running between rocks and stones in the river, comprise a panorama outside that speaks more eloquently than any words. The houses, these proud buildings firmly withstanding any wind or rain, disclose interiors of such simplicity that it borders on the most exquisite refinement. You will see chestnut floors, old stone slabs or big shimmering tiles, regional furniture carefully hunted down in antique shops, forged iron bed-heads, and beautifully worked lamps. This is a house that truly allows you, for a few days, to encounter and rediscover, if need be, the joys of communing with rich yet simple pleasures.

Where the wind blows softlyFor a few years now Marrakesh has been a fixed destination on the list of the most sought-after special locations. The fashion for riads bought by foreigners, and restored then fitted out as comfortable guest-houses, has given way to that for palaces built from start to finish in La Palmeraie, ten kilometres from Djemaa El Fna Square, the busy heart of the Moroccan city. Several centuries old, mysterious, and enveloped in blazing light from daybreak, La Palmeraie is the scene of spectacular visions at dusk. It offers a rhythmic visual interplay of powder-pink, fuchsia, pearl grey, and light ultramarine. These almost unearthly colours appear as a background to the heights of the Atlas range. La Palmeraie is entrancing in several respects. Dar Sabra is an immense building arranged over some 1000 square metres, and set elegantly in this landscape where its geometrical forms are somehow reminiscent of the adobe houses of New Mexico. The architect is an admirer of Le Corbusier, and designed a series of big rectangles linking the inside courtyards that are characteristic of traditional Arab houses, and provide various areas for relaxation and rest in an airy and light-filled environment. Red, ochre, saffran, and ochre again – various colours changing as the will of the wind and the intensity of the sun decide – decorate the façades, walls

and floors of Dar Sabra. Seven themed suites bear witness to the owner’s interest in objets d’art collected during many visits abroad, and bringing Morocco, Asia, Afghanistan, India, Japan and Africa into play. On the one hand you will see two monumental green celadon vases, an extraordinary chair-sculpture from the Lobi tribe, an old four-poster bed and even a dressed leather seat; and on the other hand an African figurative painting, an eighteenth-century Indian door, reproductions of photographs where the beauty of women’s jewellery of 1900 lives again, and a contemporary steel display unit surmounted by a head sculpted by a young artist from Essaouira. Sun-bathed Dar Sabra can also convey a refreshingly cool impression aided by the garden planted with palm trees, olive trees and cactuses, as well as two swimming pools, one of which would delight any Olympic swimmer.

Happiness at VerchantThink of a big, beautiful, honey-coloured stone house, surrounded by a green-carpeted area thick with hundred-year-old oaks and pine-trees, where you can hear insects humming and buzzing as they gather pollen, and where you soon detect birds singing amidst the rustling of so many leaves. We are at Verchant, just outside Montpellier. This property was built on the remains of a fourteenth-century house and was restored at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and once again three years ago by an enthusiastic couple, who hastened to call on the know-how of so many experts: stone-masons and carvers, mosaic artists, artist-craftsmen in metal, and cabinet-makers, in order to restore

the true identity of this unique building. They wanted to add the charm of a location redolent of luxury yet imbued with sensitivity, though without affectation, and revealing the up-to-date while avoiding any gross stylistic anachronisms. Accordingly, sixteen bedrooms and suites laid out between ancestral walls offer the refined lines of superbly-made contemporary furniture from leading Italian manufacturers. Their shapes emphasize the design of these spaces where your gaze is never trammelled. Poltrona Frau, Moroso, Casa Milano, Foscarini, Cattelan and Viccarbe ordain the atmosphere of a triumphantly modern setting, with a finely-contrived counterpoint of magnificent views

onto the listed botanic gardens, where you can enjoy the rare treat of the vines’ intoxicating scent. Age-old and more modern vines grow side-by-side over the whole estate of almost eleven hectares. Every year the grape harvest, carried out manually as in the past, and a most exacting wine-making process produce three reds, a rosé and a white: a well-tuned assortment of wines to be enjoyed in good company.

High up on the mountain-sideThe Hotel Manali is the product of the joint enthusiasm of two families for mountains and the art of living. It opened its doors a few months ago in the much sought-after resort of Courchevel. Nevertheless, rather than the 1850 centre where the most prestigious establishments and private chalets are grouped, 1650 was selected for Hotel Manali, the first feature that makes it stand out from the surrounding VIP atmosphere while benefiting from a spectacular situation at the foot of the slopes and ski tows. Guests leave the hotel’s ski room perfectly equipped to explore the dizzy heights of the snowy crests, and remove their gear in the same place, having experienced their fill of novel sensations, and feeling ready to get back to their suites, the sun-drenched terrace, or the lounge where they can enjoy a conversation at the fireside. This facility provided for the skiers is sufficiently unusual to be worth noting, and is characteristic of the ethos of Hotel Manali.

With no more than thirty rooms, the atmosphere is certainly much more reminiscent of that of a big family house, whence all formality has been banished, but with the assurance of supreme comfort accompanied by the attentive care of smiling yet never obsequious staff, who are especially efficient, and actually happy to be there. In addition, it must be said, to the quality of the management, which of course ultimately determines the tone of the place, the setting expresses an original art of living with its decorative emphases and spatial design. Manali is the name of a Himalayan village. As symbols of strength and wisdom, two monumental white stone elephants standing at the entrance to the terrace are expressions of this influence, and introduce the keynote with its evocation of India, much loved by the proprietors. Accordingly, in the context of a traditional chalet of carved wood and stone, three types of setting have been chosen for bedrooms and suites: the valley of Kullu, at the gateway to the Himalayas, the

Canadian Rockies, and the Swiss Alps. Therefore the Manali is an interplay of aesthetic contrasts brought together under the single umbrella, as it were, of the altitude, and set off with hand-painted woodwork, luxurious fabrics with sophisticated colour-ways, and powerfully evocative decorative objects: a stone head of the Buddha, a hanging wooden abstract, and a craft bowl. Here aesthetics does not obscure the minor miracles of state-of-the-art technology, backed up by cutting-edge equipment, and ingenious heated wardrobes that make sure your clothes are quite dry by morning. This is the perfect place to enjoy the pleasures of the snows at Courchevel.

>>> Practiced for centuries by many cultures around the world, detoxification is about resting, cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health.

Toxins First, lighten up your toxin load. Eliminate alcohol, coffee, cigarettes, refined sugars and saturated fats, all of which act as toxins in the body and are obstacles to your healing process.

Stress Another deterrent to good health is stress, which triggers your body to release hormones into your system. Yoga and meditation are simple and effective ways to relieve stress by resetting your physical and mental reactions to the inevitable tension life will bring.

Exercise What is the most important way to detoxify? Exercise! Yoga, pilates and jump-roping are excellent for detoxifying, as well as Gigong, a martial-arts based exercise system.

Detoxing Plan There are many detoxification programs, depending on your individual needs. The majority follow a 7-day schedule, thus giving the body time to detox and clean itself properly. Programs range from fasting on liquids for two days, followed by a carefully-planned five-day diet to allow the digestive system to rest; to cleansing supplement packages, which generally contain fiber, vitamins, herbs and minerals; to a 3-7 day juice fast (drinking only fresh fruit and vegetable juices and water) as an effective way to release toxins.

Cleansing Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back, then follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes. Or sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration. For detoxification baths use either 1/2 a cup of baking soda, 1/2 a cup of Epsom salt or 1/2 a cup of sea salt. Soak for 15-20 minutes and then scrub the skin gently with soap on a natural fiber. Within a few minutes the water will turn murky – the darkness to the water is heavy metals coming out of the skin. Do this once a week during detox and once a month for maintenance.

Water As most people know, a significant amount of the human body is made up of water. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily helps the body maintain a healthy balance. When detoxing this should be increased to assist in flushing toxins out of the system.

Enzymes The use of enzymes is important, because the body needs an adequate supply of enzymes, not only for digestion, but also for detoxification. Enzymes are best obtained from fresh raw fruits and vegetables, or taken daily with meals as nutritional supplements of multi-digestive enzymes. To aid the body in removing and eliminating wastes, enzymes are best taken in between meals.

Al Zain Jewellery had a proud beginning as the first jewellery showroom in the GCC and was established at the heart of Manama souq by the visionary Bahraini pearl merchant Abdullah Al Zain. He introduced elegant jewellery items in 18 carat gold from Italy, thus revolutionizing the traditional trading pattern of the region, which was dominated by 21 and 24 carat gold.

Today, Al Zain is one of the region’s best haute couture jewellery houses of international repute. Its exquisite and dazzling collections keep men and women up to date with the latest fashion trends and make them look stylish and appealing to the beholders. Al Zain has a variety of dazzling, exquisite, colourful, stylish, traditional and historic collections that add glamour and elegance to every occasion. Al Zain’s collections include Bridal, Tourmalina, Memories of the Gulf, Floating Pearls, Noor, Fox, Rainbow and Solitaire. Each collection has its own characteristic appeal and unique designs that steal every jewellery connoisseur’s heart. The Bridal collection features a breathtaking

collection of wedding rings and dazzling necklaces that add the charm of a princess to the bride and make her dreams come true, just like in a fairy tale. The Tourmalina range is a rhapsody of colours. Its exotic rings and necklaces show the perfect chemistry of authentic precious and semi-precious stones and white & yellow gold.

Rapid expansion plans are on the anvil at Al Zain. The company is in the final stages of spreading its presence in the region and opening new outlets at Lagoon Mall in Kuwait, in Qatar, at Dahran Mall and Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia, at City Center and Country Mall in Bahrain and in the Dubai Mall in the UAE.

Christian Lacroix Concept StoresChristian Lacroix, one of the fashion industry’s most accomplished talents, has applied his attachment to vivid colours, bold patterns and baroque decoration to everything from toys to hotel rooms, and his concept stores, as expected, provide a unique and luxurious experience for every shopper. To host his prêt a porter collections Christian Lacroix and KREO design agency have designed a new decor reflecting the future vision of his collections.

Stores such as the flagship store that opened in downtown Beirut in September 2007, and the recently revamped Dubai Burjuman store reflect this vibrant new image. The Kuwait store will also be revamped by March 2008, and in June the store in Moda Mall, Bahrain will open, followed closely by the store in Zai Mall, Qatar in August 2008, which will both also follow the new trends and designs created by Christian Lacroix.

Exclusive to Stephen Webster, Crystal Haze is a magical collection of rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets and cufflinks, in a variety of styles, created from some of nature’s most exotic gemstones. The concept, which was developed by Stephen Webster, combines the laser-cutting techniques and technology of the future with materials as old as time. The effect is created by bonding a high dome of multi-faceted rock crystal over a thin layer of natural precious stone. The cut rock crystal allows light to enter at numerous different angles causing

the stone to produce a holographic-like ‘haze’ of colour that moves as the stone is turned. Crystal haze has many exotic and vibrant colour options, such as turquoise, chalcedony, falcons Eye (Blue tigers eye), lapis, ruby, cultured ruby, rhodonite, angelskin (pink opal), red garnet, bulls eye (red tigers eye), cornelian, coral, tigers eye, chrysoprase, chrysolemon, hematite, silver obsidian, amethyst over white mother of pearl, a black and white mother of pearl. colours new to 2006 are purple agate, green opal and mango agate.

The idea of Ampoule is as old as time and has its roots in the Middle East. It is for safe-keeping something of great value – musk, scent, rare oils or a baby’s or mother’s tears – to be kept close to the heart. Jewellery seems to have lost its romance and forgotten that it should look to become an heirloom. Ampoule should be bought or given with love and emotion. The shape is tactile and satisfying and wearable, borrowed from the shapes of the water vessels

of antiquity and echoing those thousands of years. It is made in different coloured golds and in black diamonds, white diamonds, yellow sapphires, blue sapphires or rubies, and in combinations of these. From subtle plain gold and diamonds to the brightest colour combination making an antique concept shine with originality and modernity. It comes in three sizes and many permutations, and each one will be your Ampoule.

‘The Kite Runner’ is the unforgettable, beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan nonetheless grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amir’s father’s servant, is a Hazara, member of a shunned ethnic minority. Written against a history that has not been told in fiction before, ‘The Kite Runner’ describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.

Mixing iconic classical themes with Latin rhythms is a winning combination on the new Klazz Brothers release, ‘Classic Meets Cuba’. A German trio of classically trained musicians, The Klazz Brothers met two local percussionists during a tour stop in Havana and, undeterred

by cultural differences, these remarkable musicians proceed to lend credence to the old adage of music being a universal language. The overall result is a compilation that will induce lots of smiles, toe-tapping, and maybe even a little hip-shaking.

Born and raised in Paisley, Scotland, Paolo Nutini is a 21-year-old singer / songwriter blessed with a soulful, passionate voice and the natural gift of being able to tell a story in a song. His bold voice and provocative songs created an instant buzz and he signed to Atlantic Records shortly after his 18th birthday, immediately heading north to Liverpool to work on his debut album with renowned producer Ken Nelson (known

for working with Coldplay, Ray LaMontagne and Badly Drawn Boy, amongst others). The result of their labours, the album ‘These Streets’ immediately entered the UK album charts at number 3. The album is almost an autobiography of Nutini’s journey from Paisley to London, and many songs were inspired by current events in his life. He is aiming on releasing a new album sometime in 2008.

This volume is the latest in a series that began as ambient music for upscale, celebrity-studded, Buddha-themed restaurants (the flagship venue is in Paris). Largely due to frenzied word of mouth, the tunes quickly outgrew their initial parameters, becoming massively popular in nightclubs and with private listeners. Compiled by DJ Ravin, who

has been involved with the project since the first pair of groundbreaking albums, the present two-disc set celebrates the opening of a new Buddha-Bar in London. After so many years and innumerable imitators, Buddha-Bar obviously is no longer quite the latest thing, but still wields the indisputable clout of an original.

‘Casablanca’ is an American romance film set in the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca during World War II. The film, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine and Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund, focuses on Rick’s conflict between love and virtue, right and wrong. Although it was an A-list movie, with established stars and first-rate writers, no one involved with its production expected ‘Casablanca’ to be anything out of the ordinary;

‘A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl’ is based on the memoir by Mariane Pearl. Her husband Daniel, the South Asia Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal, was researching a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid which drew them to Karachi. Six months pregnant when the ordeal began, she wrote the book to introduce Adam to the father he would
