Rules of the Workshop • There is no such thing as a dumb question!

• There is no such thing as an interruption - you are free to contribute at any time especially using the back channel

• Sharing your “ah ahas” or light bulb moments is almost compulsory

• It is OK for facilitators to answer “We haven’t a clue … but let’s find out together”!

• Joking is a valid pedagogy learning should be fun.

• The head swipe (aka over my head) is extremely important and so don’t stop until acknowledged

• Coffee is technology and enhances learning so get it any timeTelephone: +61 402468777

The Padagogy Wheel ENG V5.0 Apple iOS

Remembering Criteria: Apps that fit into the "remembering" stage improve the user's ability to define terms, identify facts, and recall and locate information. Many educational apps fall into the "remembering" phase of learning. They ask users to select an answer out of a line-up, find matches, and sequence content or input answers

Applying Criteria: Apps that fit into the applying stage provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their ability to implement learned procedures and methods. They also highlight the ability to apply concepts in unfamiliar circumstances.Analysing Criteria: Apps that fit into the "analysing" stage improve the user's ability to differentiate between the relevant and irrelevant, determine relationships, and recognise the organisation of content..Evaluating Criteria: Apps that fit into the "evaluating" stage improve the user's ability to judge material or methods based on criteria set by themselves or external sources. They help students judge content reliability, accuracy, quality, effectiveness, and reach informed decisions.Creating Criteria: Apps that fit into the "creating" stage provide opportunities for students generate ideas, design plans, and produce products.

http://bit.ly/pwsimulation

Understanding Criteria: Apps that fit into this "understanding" stage provide opportunities for students to explain ideas or concepts. Understanding apps step away from the selection of a "right" answer and introduce a more open-ended format for students to summarise content and translate meaning.

App Selection Criteria

Developed by Allan Carrington Designing Outcomes Adelaide South Australia Email: [email protected]

Standing on the Shoulders of GiantsThis Taxonomy wheel, without the apps, was first discovered at Paul Hopkin’s educational consultancy website mmiweb.org.uk That wheel was produced by Sharon Artley and was an adaption of Kathwohl and Anderson’s (2001) adaption of Bloom (1956). The idea to further adapt it for the iPad in V2.0 and V3.0, I want to acknowledge Kathy Schrock on her website Bloomin’ Apps. In V4.0 the App Selection Criteria is based on an excellent six part article in Edutopia by Diane Darrow. V5.0 of the Padagogy Wheel has a comprehensive list of Action Verbs which are from the info-graphic “Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Verbs” published by Globaldigitalcitizen.org, first viewed at “Bloom’s Digital Taxonomy Verbs for 21st Century Students” on the Teachthought blog.

Getting the best use out of the Padagogy Wheel

Use it as a series of prompts or interconnected gears to check your teaching from planning to implementation The Attributes Gear: This is the core of learning design. You must constantly revisit things like ethics, responsibility and citizenship. Ask yourself the question what will a graduate from this learning experience ‘look like’ i.e. what is it that makes others see them as successful? Ask ‘how does everything I do support these attributes and capabilities?’ The Motivation Gear: Ask yourself ‘How does everything I build and teach give the learner autonomy, mastery and purpose?’ The Blooms Gear: Helps you design learning objectives that achieve higher order thinking. Try to get at least one learning objective from each category. Only after this are you ready for technology enhancement. The Technology Gear: Ask ‘How can this serve your pedagogy’? Apps are only suggestions, look for better ones & combine more that one in a learning sequence. The SAMR Model Gear: This is “How are you going to use the technologies you have chosen”? I would like to thank Tobias Rodemerk for the idea of the gears.

“The Padagogy Wheel visual places the idea of motivation and capabilities at the center, which gets at one of its more compelling characteristics as a model – the meshing of technology, thinking, and student motivation. Many of the failures in #edtech are failures in #edtech integration, and frameworks like the Padagogy wheel attempt to clarify the relationship between “big picture” elements. Seeing the pieces – tablets, apps, learning goals, cognitive actions, etc.– and how they work together is everything. Without that vision, any bit of #edtech is limp and lifeless”.

Page 22: SLO Teachers Edtech Int Workshop Nov2018HD

Concepts of Transformative Learning1. A disorienting dilemma

2. A self examination with feelings of guilt or shame

3. A critical assessment of epistemic, sociocultural, or psychic assumptions

4. Recognition that one’s discontent and the process of transformation are shared and that others have negotiated a similar change

5. Exploration of options for new roles, relationships, & actions

6. Planning a course of action

7. Acquisition of knowledge & skills for implementing one’s plan

8. Provision trying of new roles

9. Building of competence and self-confidence in new roles & relationships

10. A reintegration into one’s life on the basis of conditions dictated by one’s perspective

Page 23: SLO Teachers Edtech Int Workshop Nov2018HD

How do I create Transformative LearningGreat Teachers need to reflect on these questions

1. How do you view yourself as an instructor? Do you see yourself as an expert? Are you open to the views and opinions of others? How do you accept and/or process those views when you encounter them?

2. How much more do you feel you need to learn about teaching and learning, or about your current subject matter?

3. How do you generally run a class? Do you depend on the course materials and discussion methods or are you running your own agenda as well?

4. In the ILT (instructor-led training) discussion, do you empower the trainees to pursue knowledge on their own? Do you incorporate individualized, collaborative exercises during your course mentoring session?

5. How do discussions generally go in your eLearning courses? Are they usually dominated by a few participants? Are your discussions uniformly interactive?

6. How comfortable do you feel with the concept of promoting self-knowledge and experience in learners? Do you motivate learners to learn for the sake of learning and promote a culture of learning organization?

7. How comfortable are you when trainees disagree with your view point? How would you feel if a trainee suggested that you read material that they have discovered in their learning process?

8. Do you feel that you need to maintain control of the learning environment? How comfortable are you in giving over this control to learners and being an equal participant?

9. How comfortable are you with receiving material from the students that are not grammatically correct or well-written, but is truly the expression of their self?

10. How do you define learning? What do you hope to see as learning outcomes from an eLearning course session?https://www.talentlms.com/blog/transformative-learning-elearning/

Page 24: SLO Teachers Edtech Int Workshop Nov2018HD

Break into groups of 3-4 and as a group, reflect on and discuss these questions on how to create transformative learning. Please then share here your thoughts as to how this will work in your classroom.

Step 1: Build a profile of excellence… What does an excellent graduate “look like”? What attributes?

Step 2: Question: how to get the students to “look like” that? Work on including HOTS (higher order thinking skills) into your learning outcomes.

Step 3: Design Assessments - make them real life.

Step 4: Design the Learning Activities - use appropriate technologies.

Step 5: What do I need to embed to support the learning outcomes? Last step is to embed contextual content.

Goldilocks Tasks: Dan Pink says: Challenges that are not too hot not too cold, neither overly difficult nor overly simple. One source of frustration in the workplace is the frequent mismatch between what people must do and what people can do. When what they must do exceeds their capabilities, the result is anxiety. When what they must do falls short of their capabilities, the result is boredom.

• Autonomy – Provide students with frequent and authentic opportunities to make choices and engage in critical thinking / design.

• Mastery – People generally want to get better at their work because it makes them feel good. Not only is a job well done more satisfying, but in today’s standards based world mastery of learning is essential.

• Purpose – “Why do I have to do this? When am I ever going to use this”? These are questions kids ask teachers every day. Oftentimes the answer they receive is – “because it’s important”. However, oftentimes teachers don’t help kids understand why it is important. This is one of the greatest errors we make as educators. Kids are naturally curious. If we link learning to their quality world, they get really excited about the work, want to do it and want to do it well.

There are many lists of educational applications readily available but it is important that, as a professional, you are able to critically examine an application and determine if it is appropriate for your students’ learning profiles. With this end in mind, we have created a set of criteria that will guide you in finding an app to meet your students’ needs. Although this checklist was developed with supporting students with LDs in mind, you could repurpose this checklist to find apps to support or engage all of your students.

Important you support students with Learning Disabilitieshttp://ldatschool.ca/technology/a-guide-to-choosing-educational-apps/

• Relevance: The app’s focus has a strong connection to the purpose for the app and appropriate for the student

• Customisation: App offers complete flexibility to alter content and settings to meet student needs

• Feedback: Student is provided specific feedback

• Thinking Skills: App encourages the use of higher order thinking skills including creating, evaluating, and analyzing

• Engagement: Student is highly motivated to use the app

• Sharing: Specific performance summary or student product is saved in app and can be exported to the teacher or for an audience

An app’s rubric score is very dependent on the intended purpose and student needs. The score you give an app will differ from how others score it. Again, apps that score low may still be good apps. But, it is handy to score apps if you are making purchasing decisions and/or have multiple apps to choose from.

Reflections: Intro to SAMR ModelDiscuss how by asking these questions a teacher can improve how they design activities using technology. What might happen to how students will learn?A. What will I gain by replacing the older technology with

the new technology?

B. Have I added an improvement to the task process that could not be accomplished with the older technology at a fundamental level?

C. Does this modification fundamentally depend upon the new technology?

D. How is the new task uniquely made possible by the new technology?

Examples of Using the Padagogy Wheel

Page 111: SLO Teachers Edtech Int Workshop Nov2018HD

One of my favourite ways to share the Padagogy Wheel is through a hands-on interactive lesson re-design workshop. Leveraging Understanding by Design (UbD), teachers and designers craft new learning experiences through the focused lens of mastery demonstrations. The encompassing detail of the Padagogy Wheel helps filter what can be an overwhelming task to hone in on district initiatives, objective purpose, etc. To ensure opportunity to meet a broad range of taste and skill, I choose specific apps to label the sides of wooden dice. Participants roll the dice to generate random combinations and then craft experiences from the combinations.USA

Activity Example of student task

Determining the category according to the

formulation of educational objectives

Think over the formulation of these educational goals, and try to determine the appropriate category of revised taxonomy.

• Pupils categorise whether the words are listed or not.• Pupils in the group will perform sketches which typify good deeds. The sketch is recorded on video.• Pupils solve twenty maths problems for subtraction in an application on a tablet.

Determining the category of educational objectives

according to tasked activities

Think over the following tasked activities, and try to determine the appropriate category of revised taxonomy.

• Prepare a script for the creation of a fairy tale, which will later be animated with the tablet.• Listen to the teacher explanations, supported by an electronic presentation, and write notes in the

workbook.• Prepare a hundred flashcards on the tablet, thanks to which the other students will be able to learn the

flags of countries of Central Europe.

Use of one application to achieve different

categories of cognitive objectives

Think about the possibilities in group activities with the implementation of selected applications and enter your various activities to achieve the various categories of objectives of the revised taxonomy. For each activity, also consider the level of SAMR. Examples of applications used:

• Book Creator• Excel• Educreations• Bitsboard• Youtube

In 2016 we noticed that pre-service teachers when devising activities using ICT, they were usually based on the capabilities of the technology or the application they wanted to use, and not from the learning objectives. We sought a tool that would provide students with the necessary methodological support. After in depth research of methodological tools to support pre-service teachers, we chose the Padagogy Wheel

Since then we have therefore been able to supplement practical demonstrations of working with students’ tablets with reflections on goals with the Padagogy Wheel. Before using the Padagogy Wheel in the creation of methodological papers, students received some training activities focused on reflection of cognitive goals

• All students bring a wide variety of skills, needs, and interests to learning.

• Whilst that variability is the norm rather than the exception, students share common broad goals of aspiring to live, learn and work in a connected digital society.

• That each and every student has value. • To maintain high expectations about what the student

can achieve, they (the teachers) need to get to know and value each student and must find flexible and multiple ways for the student to succeed.

• Learning is a collaborative journey and everyone learns better through supportive social relationships.

The ABLE framework focuses on empowering learners of all abilities to have a powerful voice as self-advocates who take ownership of their education.

Built-in Supports and Scaffolds (Augmentation): The technology includes supports that account for learner variability. Question: How am I providing supports to allow all learners to perceive and process the information, conceptualise the problems and consolidate the learning?

Expression and Creativity (Redefinition): The technology unleashes creative potential and disrupts perceptions of disability Question: How am I facilitating learners to find novel / alternative / challenging means of expressing their vision of the world and their identities within it?

Leveraging Multimedia (Modification): The technology provides multiple means of expression. Question: How am I making it possible for all learners to respond and demonstrate understanding with multimedia?

For more information please explore this:

Access to Content and Tools (Substitution): The technology eliminates barriers that prevent access to information & communication. Question: How do the apps I am using work with the built-in accessibility features of the device?

Use the PWTS as a series of prompts like an analogy of interconnected gears, to check your teaching from planning to implementation. The Social & Emotional Learning Gear: SEL is the core of learning design. You must constantly revisit things like ethics, responsibility and citizenship. Ask yourself the question ‘What will a graduate from this learning experience ‘look like’ i.e. What is it that makes others see them as successful?Ask ‘how does everything I do support these attributes and employability capabilities?’ The TEST Gear: Consider the TEST Framework. Evaluate the available tasks, environment, skills and tools. The Motivation Gear: Ask yourself ‘How does everything I build and teach give the learner autonomy, mastery and purpose?’ The Focus Support Gear: 6 major groups with 151 areas of focus linked to online resources. Think about the needs of your students and how to teach to their strengths before considering edtech integration. The Technology Gear: Ask ‘How can this serve the desired outcomes?’ Apps are only suggestions, look for better ones & combine more than one in a learning sequence. The SAMR Model Gear: Consider SAMR.This is ‘How are you going to use
