Warm UpWhen a consumer eats another organism, how much energy do you think is passed along in %?
Hint…it’s between 0% - 100%
Reading… 5 minutesYou will read the following article
“Food Energy Pyramid”You are reading to find out:1) How much is passed when an
organism eats another organism2) Why do we use a pyramid to show
this?3) Why are producers at the bottom of
the pyramid and carnivores are at the top?
You will write these answers in your notebook!
Answers…Did you find out:1) How much is passed when an
organism eats another organism -10%2) Why do we use a pyramid to show
this? There are < herbivores than producers, < carnivores than herbivores, < carnivores that only eat other carnivores
3) Why producers at the bottom and carnivores at the top? > producers than tertiary consumers
Back to our warm upCan you believe only 10% is passed along at each level!
Write in notebook….The Ten Percent Rule (10%)Scientists say that about 90% of the available energy is used for life processes like respiration, photosynthesis, and reproduction
Write in notebook….Scientists use a Pyramid of Energy to
explain this
Video on Energy Pyramidhttps://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWvtRf4TAO4
Write in notebookThe Pyramid of Energy : shows how energy available for consumers decreases as you travels up
We are now going to fill in a Pyramid of Energy
Pyramid of Energy..
Label your pyramid at each level and
draw 3 examples for each level
How else can we label our pyramid?
Answer in notebook. (complete sentences) Do animals need the sun to survive?
Why or why not.
Explain!
Volunteers….. Do animals need the sun to survive?
Lets Review! All things get energy from food. Green plants use energy from the sun to
make their own food. Plants use the food they make for energy to
grow. Animals get energy by eating plants and
other animals. The energy in living things originates from
the sun.
Lets ReviewWhen animals eat green plants and other
animals eat those animals, the energy moves from one living thing to another.
Ultimately all the members of a food chain depend on the energy from the sun.
